This paper discusses the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement in marine concrete structures focusing on the variability in the progress of deterioration. Through tests and analyses of reinforced concrete slabs taken out from existing open-pile structures that have been in service for 30 to 40 years, the following topics were particularly discussed: variation in chloride ion profiles of concrete, variation in corrosion properties of reinforcement embedded in concrete, and influence of the reinforcement corrosion on the load-carrying capacity of the concrete slabs. As a result, their variability was found to be very large even in one reinforced concrete slab with almost the same conditions. It was also discussed how to determine the calculation parameters for prediction of decreasing in load-carrying capacity of concrete members with chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement.
When RC beams are strengthening in flexure with steel plate, they have initial strain due to dead load. Strain of steel used in strengthening member is zero. The effect of strengthening in flexure at member changes in accordance with the quantity of initial strain. But in most cases, Quantity of reinforcement is determined without regard to the difference of initial strain when there are calculated the strengthening in flexure at beams. Such method is possible to suggest inadequate quantity of reinforcement. Thus, the object of the study is to suggest practical design equation and reinforcement proposal using comparison and analysis reinforcement efficiency about fexural strength in case with regard and without regard to the initial strain when Re beams are strengthening in flexure with steel plate.
Experimental research was conducted to investigate structural performance of concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids were tested under simulated seismic loading. The columns were subjected to constant axial compression accompanied by incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals. The results indicate thar welded reinforcement grid can be used effectively as confinement reinforcement provided that the steel used, have sufficient ductility and the welding process employed does not alter the strength and elongation characteristics of steel. The grids improved the structural performance of columns, which developed lateral drift ratios in excess of 3% with the spacing and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement similar to those required by the ACI 318-95 Building Code.
Generally, a lot of reinforcements are used in nuclear power plant concrete structures in order to improve the structural safety, but it may cause several potential problems due to the overcrowded reinforcement, such as the degradation of concrete quality, the construction delay and the increase of construction cost. In order to resolve these problems, structural test researches and code change studies on using high-strength reinforcement (Gr.80) in unclear power plant structures are under way, and there is good progress in code change of ASM BPVC.III.2 and ACI 349. This purpose of this study is to review the code change status ASM BPVC.III.2, ACI 349 under way to use the high-strength reinforcement in nuclear power plant structures. Also I will introduce the design optimization of NPP structures with high-strength reinforcements in order to maximize the effect and minimize the problem when using the high-strength reinforcements in NPP structures.

Nonlinear models, capable of taking into account all the phenomena involved in the cracking and in the failure of lightly reinforced concrete beams, are nowadays available for a rigorous calculation of the minimum reinforcement. To simplify the current approaches, a new procedure is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the ductility index, which is lower than zero for under-reinforced concrete beams in bending, is introduced. The results of a general model, as well as the data measured in several tests, reveal the existence of two linear relationships between ductility index, crack width, and the amount of steel reinforcement. The above relationships can be applied to a wide range of lightly reinforced concrete beams, regardless of the geometrical dimensions and of the mechanical properties of materials. Accordingly, if only a few tests are combined with this linear relationships, a new design-by-testing procedure can be used to calculate the minimum reinforcement, which guarantees both the control of cracking in service and the ductility at failure.

In this work, a comprehensive approach to model the structural behaviour of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams subjected to reinforcement corrosion is proposed. The coupled environmental - mechanical damage model developed by some of the authors is enhanced for considering the main effects of corrosion on concrete, on composite interaction between reinforcement bars and concrete and on steel reinforcement. This approach is adopted for reproducing a set of experimental tests on RC beams with different corrosion degrees. After the simulation of the sound beams, the main parameters involved in the relationships characterizing the effects of corrosion are calibrated and tested, referring to one degraded beam. Then, in order to validate the proposed approach and to assess its ability to predict the structural response of deteriorated elements, several corroded beams are analyzed. The numerical results show a good agreement with the experimental ones: in particular, the proposed model properly predicts the structural response in terms of both failure mode and load-deflection curves, with increasing corrosion level.

The contribution of tensioned concrete between cracks (tension-stiffening) cannot be ignored when analysing deformation of reinforced concrete elements. The tension-stiffening effect is crucial when it comes to adequately estimating the load-deformation response of steel reinforced concrete and the more recently appeared fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete. This paper presents a unified methodology for numerical modelling of the tension-stiffening effect in steel as well as FRP reinforced flexural members using the concept of equivalent deformation modulus and the smeared crack approach to obtain a modified stress-strain relation of the reinforcement. A closed-form solution for the equivalent secant modulus of deformation of the tensioned reinforcement is proposed for rectangular sections taking the Eurocode 2 curvature prediction technique as the reference. Using equations based on general principles of structural mechanics, the main influencing parameters are obtained. It is found that the ratio between the equivalent stiffness and the initial stiffness basically depends on the product of the modular ratio and reinforcement ratio ($n{\rho}$), the effective-to-total depth ratio (d/h), and the level of loading. The proposed methodology is adequate for numerical modelling of tension-stiffening for different FRP and steel reinforcement, under both service and ultimate conditions. Comparison of the predicted and experimental data obtained by the authors indicates that the proposed methodology is capable to adequately model the tension-stiffening effect in beams reinforced with FRP or steel bars within wide range of loading.

Steel reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) components have been proposed for seismic structural applications, for example in coupling beams, infill panels, joints, columns, and flexural members. The development of strain in the steel reinforcement of cementitious components has been shown to vary based on both the steel reinforcement ratio and the applied deformation history. Strain in the steel reinforcement of reinforced ECC components is an important structural response metric because ultimate failure is often by fracture of the steel reinforcement. A recently proposed bond-slip model has been successfully calibrated to cyclically tested reinforced ECC beams wherein the deformation history contained monotonically increasing cycles. This paper reports simulations of two-dimensional finite element models of reinforced ECC beams to determine the appropriateness and significance of altering a phenomenological bond-slip model based on the applied deformation history. The numerical simulations with various values of post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness are compared to experimental results. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness had little effect on the cracking patterns and hysteretic response of the reinforced ECC flexural models tested, which consisted of two different steel reinforcement ratios subjected to two different deformation histories. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness did, however, affect the magnitude of strain and the length of reinforcing bar that strain-hardened. Overall, a numerical model with a constant bond-slip model represented well various responses in reinforced ECC beams with multiple steel reinforcement ratios subjected to different deformation histories.
