  • Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) is a very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures. changing material properties and shape of structure. Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied and successfully applied to HDD cover model. To check the effectiveness of this surface grooving technique, the grooved HDD cover design was manufactured using rapid prototyping and experimentally tested to prove the effectiveness of the grooving method as one of SDM techniques. And the modal strain energy and eigenvalue sensitivity method for choosing the initial starting point are compared.

  • The main noise and vibration source of the BLDC rotary compressor for air conditioner was analyzed by using the measurement of noise and vibration, noise contour, and experimental modal analysis. The source is presumed to the mechanical resonance excited by the electromagnetic attractive force of the BLDC motor. To reduce the excessive noise of the BLDC rotary compressor due to the mechanical resonance, air-gap enlargement and structural dynamic modification were applied in this paper. Its validations were conducted by the analysis of the electromagnetic attractive force which is generated by the BLDC motor and by the measurement of noise and vibration of the BLDC rotary compressor. By enlarging the length of air-gap and conducting the structural dynamic modification, the noise and vibration in the compressor was significantly improved by 4.5 dB(A) and 56 percent, respectively.

Changes of Mooring Force due to Structural Modification of a Barge Ship (바지선 구조변경이 계류력 변화와 안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Structural modifications of a ship may cause a fatal accident such as sinking and wrecking of ship. Especially, barge ship can be easily reconstructed to load more bulk cargo. In this study, for a real accident case, change of mooring force due to structural modification was analyzed to evaluate accident risk. A two dimensional dynamic model for the barge ship was constructed to compute mooring forces with related to floating motion. The equation of motion was established in Matlab code and buoyancy was calculated by using direct integration of submerged volume. The results showed that wind force, current force, and mooring force after rebuilding was approximately 4.3 kN, 14 kN, 1,561 kN respectively. The maximum force of mooring force according to the length of mooring cable were 1,614 kN at 30 m of mooring cable. Thus, an arbitrary modification of ship lead instability and unreliable result so that illegal rebuilding of ship should be avoided.

Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied. In this work, the shape of base structure was modified to improve its dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies via surface grooving technique. Grooving shape was formed by mergingthe neighboring small embossing elements after analyzing frequency increment sensitivities of all the neighboring emboss elements. For this process, Criterion Factor was introduced and the initial grooving was started from the element having highest strain energy and the grooving is expanded into neighboring element. The range of targeting grooving area to check its frequency variations restricted to their neighboring area to reduce the computation effort. This surface grooving technique was successfully applied to a hard disk drives (HDD) cover model to raise its natural frequency by giving some groove on its surface.

  • For a large structure, substructure based SDM(structural dynamics modification) method is very effective to raise its dynamic characteristics. Dividing into smaller substructures has a major advantage in the aspect of computation especially for getting sensitivities, which are in the core of SDM process. But quite often, non-matching nodes problem occurs in the process of synthesizing substructures. The reason is that, in general, each substructure is modelled separately, then later combined together to form a entire structure model under interface constraint conditions. Without solving the non-matching nodes problem, the substructure based SDM can not be processed. In this work, virtual node concept is introduced. Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the interface compatibility constraint. The governing equation of whole structure is derived using hybrid variational principle. The eigenvalues of whole structure are calculated using determinant search method. The number of degrees of freedom of the eigenvalue problem can be drastically reduced to just the number of interface degree of freedom. Thus, the eigenvalue sensitivities can be easily calculated, and further SDM can be efficiently performed. Some numerical problems are tested to show the effectiveness of handling non-matching nodes.

  • Recently to develop an automobile with better properities many researches and investments have been executed. In this paper we intend to improve the automobile properties by reducing the weight of the engine without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first the vibration analysis by the Substructure Synthesis Mehtod and the exciting test of the engine model performed to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools. And the weight minimiza-tion is performed by the Sensitivity Analysis and the Optimum Structural Modificationl. To decrease the engine weight ideally the weight of the parts with the low sensitivity is to cut mainly and the changing quantity of the natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the weight modification of the parts with the high sensitivity. As actually the mathematical unique solution for the homogeneous problem(i. e. 0 object func-tion problem)does not exist we redesign the engine block with much thinner initial thickness and recover the natural frequencies and natural modes of original structure by the sensitivity analy-sis and then observe the Frequency Response Function(FRF) for the interesting points. In this analysis the original thickness of the engine model is 8mm and the redesigned initial thicknesses are 5mm and 6mm, And the number of the interesting natural frequencies are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

At first, to check the effect of mesh size, surface grooving technique was tested to the fine HDD cover FEmodel. And fur the more efficient method, the algorithm is modified. Removing the low-valued modal strain energy element among the target domain, computational effort can be greatly reduced and the result of simulation is similar with the other simulation result.

  • The Finite Element Method(FEM) generally used for the structural analysis has some defects, i.e. a great deal of computational time and huge memory capacity of computer are needed in the application to large and/or complex structures, etc. Therefore the Component Mode Synthesis method(CMS), one of sub-structure synthesis methods, was made to improve such demerits and has been developed up to now. In optimum structural modification problems, the sensitivity analysis method is useful, where the sensitivity-calculated by Fox's suggestion-is defined as the diffentials of design variables for the objective values. This paper discusses the vibration minimization techniques for the oper box type structure, in which it is assumed that an engine operates at 10-40Hz range. The results obtained are as follow; (1) The sensitivity of natural frequency could be easily obtained by sensitivity analysis method and the optimum position to insert pillars could be found by using it. (2) The rates of structural modification could be exactly obtained and the natural frequency observed could be easily shifted to the objective value. (3) The maximum amplitude around natural frequency noted could be nearly reduced to 1/25 by modification.

Energy-based design base shear for RC frames considering global failure mechanism and reduced hysteretic behavior

  • A nonlinear static procedure considering work-energy principle and global failure mechanism to estimate base shears of reinforced concrete (RC) frame-type structures is presented. The relative energy equation comprising of elastic vibrational energy, plastic strain energy and seismic input energy is obtained. The input energy is modified with a factor depending on damping ratio and ductility, and the energy that contributes to damage is obtained. The plastic energy is decreased with a factor to consider the reduced hysteretic behavior of RC members. Given the pre-selected failure mechanism, the modified energy balance equality is written using various approximations for modification factors of input energy and plastic energy in scientific literature. External work done by the design lateral forces distributed to story levels in accordance with Turkish Seismic Design Code is calculated considering the target plastic drift. Equating the plastic energy obtained from energy balance to external work done by the equivalent inertia forces considering, a total of 16 energy-based base shears for each frame are derived considering different combinations of modification factors. Ductility related parameters of modification factors are determined from pushover analysis. Relative input energy of multi degree of freedom (MDOF) system is approximated by using the modal-energy-decomposition approach. Energy-based design base shears are compared with those obtained from nonlinear time history (NLTH) analysis using recorded accelerograms. It is found that some of the energy-based base shears are in reasonable agreement with the mean base shear obtained from NLTH analysis.

  • This study intends to reduce the weight of structure without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first, the Vibration analyses by the Substructure Synthesis Method and FEM using the ANSYS are performed for the engine speed converter to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools. Weight minimization is performed by the Sensitivity Analysis and the Optimum Structural Modification. To decrease the converter weight ideally, the parts with low sensitivity are to be cut mainly, and the changing quantity of the natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the weight modification of the parts with high sensitivity. As the unique mathematical solution for the homogeneous problem( i.e. 0 object function problem) does not exist, the converter is redesigned with much thinner initial thickness. The goal of this study is to recover the dynamic characteristics of redesigned structure to those of the original one. To say in the other words, the modified structure has the same dynamic characteristics and the more lighter weight to compare with the original one. In this analysis, the modification was performed with the redesigned initial thickness of 60 mm and 70 mm. And the numbers of the interesting natural frequencies are 1, 2, 4 respectively. Consequently 27% of weight reduction effects were earned.
