  • Nonlinear analysis for seismic performance evaluation of existing building usually takes 4~5 times more than linear analysis based on KBC code. To obtain accurate results from the nonlinear analysis, there are a lot of things to be considered for nonlinear analysis modeling. For example, reinforcing layout, applied load and seismic details affect behavior of structural members for the existing building. Engineer-oriented computerized system was developed for engineers to evaluate effective seismic performance of existing buildings with abiding by seismic design principles. Using the engineer-oriented program, seismic performance evaluation of reinforced concrete building was performed. Nonlinear hinge properties were applied with real time multiple consideration such as section layout, section analysis result, applied load and performance levels. As a result, the building was evaluated to satisfy LS(Life Safety) performance level. A comparison between engineer-oriented and program-oriented results is presented to show how important the role of structural engineer is for seismic performance evaluation of existing buildings.

  • Structural analysis models to develop live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge should have the precision of the analysis results as well as modeling simplicity. This is due to the numerous frequency of structural analysis needed while developing live load distribution factors. In this study, an appropriate structural analysis model is selected by comparing previous researchs studies and models used in practical design. Also, the influence by the flexural stiffness of barrier and diaphragm on the live load distribution had been analyzed through comparing the numerical analysis and experimental tests. As a result, the model that the eccentric girder and the barrier and diaphragm are connected to the deck plate was appropriate in satisfying both accuracy and simplicity for structural analysis of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. However, the barrier was analyzed to have insignificant influence on the live load distribution in spite of its variation of stiffness. The eccentric diaphragm showed little influence at 25% or higher of flexural stiffness. From the results, a model that the girder is rigidly connected to the deck plate in consideration of the eccentricity, the barrier is ignored and the whole section of diaphragm is supposed to be valid without eccentricity is decided as the most appropriate structural model to develop the live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge in this study.

  • While fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) materials have been largely used in the retrofitting of concrete buildings, its application has been limited because of some problems such as de-bonding of FRP layers from the concrete surface. This paper is the part of a wide experimental and analytical investigation about flexural retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) columns using FRP and mechanical fasteners (MF). A new generation of MF is proposed, which is applicable for retrofitting of RC columns. Furthermore, generally, to evaluate a retrofitted structure the nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are the most accurate methods to estimate the performance of a structure. In the nonlinear analysis of a structure, accurate modeling of structural elements is necessary for estimation the reasonable results. So for nonlinear analysis of a structure, modeling parameters for beams, columns, and beam-column joints are essential. According to the concentrated hinge method, which is one of the most popular nonlinear modeling methods, structural members shall be modeled using concentrated or distributed plastic hinge models using modeling parameters. The nonlinear models of members should be capable of representing the inelastic response of the component. On the other hand, in performance based design to make a decision about a structure or design a new one, numerical acceptance should be determined. Modeling parameters and numerical acceptance criteria are different for buildings of different types and for different performance levels. In this paper, a new method was proposed for FRP retrofitted columns to avoid FRP debonding. For this purpose, mechanical fasteners were used to achieve the composite behavior of FRP and concrete columns. The experimental results showed that the use of the new method proposed in this paper increased the flexural strength and lateral load capacity of the columns significantly, and a good composition of FRP and RC column was achieved. Moreover, the modeling parameters and acceptance criteria were presented, which were derived from the experimental study in order to use in nonlinear analysis and performance-based design approach.

  • This paper presents the effect on the inelastic behavior and structural performance of concrete and filled steel pipe through a numerical method for reliable judgment under various load conditions of the CJS composite structural system. Variable values optimized for the CJS synthetic structural system and the effects of multiple variables used for finite element analysis to present analytical modeling were compared and analyzed with experimental results. The Winfrith concrete model was used as a concrete material model that describes the confinement effect well, and the concrete structure was modeled with solid elements. Through geometric analysis of shell and solid elements, rectangular steel pipe columns and steel elements were modeled as shell elements. In addition, the slip behavior of the joint between the concrete column and the rectangular steel pipe was described using the Surface-to-Surface function. After finite element analysis modeling, simulation was performed for cyclic loading after assuming that the lower part of the foundation was a pin in the same way as in the experiment. The analysis model was verified by comparing the calculated analysis results with the experimental results, focusing on initial stiffness, maximum strength, and energy dissipation capability.

  • This study presents a methodology for the system reliability analysis of cracked structures with random material properties, which are modeled as random fields, and crack geometry under random static loads. The finite element method provides the computational framework to obtain the stress intensity solutions, and the first-order reliability method provides the basis for modeling and analysis of uncertainties. The ultimate structural system reliability is effectively evaluated by the stable configuration approach. Numerical examples are given for the case of random fracture toughness and load.

  • This paper is concerned with steel-concrete composite plate girders curved in plan. At the design stage these girders are assumed sometimes to act independent of the deck slabs resting on them in order to simplify the analysis. The advantage of composite action between the steel girders and concrete deck is not utilized. Finite element modeling of such composite action in plate girders is considered in this paper. Details of the finite element modeling and the non-linear analysis of the girders are presented along with the results obtained. Tension field action in the web panels similar to those observed in the straight plate girders is also noticed in these girders. Finite element and experimental results in respect of curved steel plate girders and straight composite plate girders tested by other researchers are presented first to assess the accuracy of the modeling. Effects of parameters such as curvature, steel flange width and web panel width that affect the behavior of composite girders are then considered in the analyses. An approximate method to predict the ultimate strength of horizontally curved composite plate girders is also presented.

  • In this paper we evaluated dynamic stability, considering the effects of modeling and analysis methods on moving load analysis, for which a sophisticated 3 dimensional model of a PSC-I type girder bridge was used. For this purpose, we suggested a reasonable modeling method and the physical properties of the concrete and ballasted track system involved. We also analyzed the response characteristics according to: 1) the type of track system; 2) whether or not the track was modeled; 3) whether or not the distance between the girder center and the bearing were considered; 4) the analysis method (i.e., direct integral and modal analysis); 5) whether or not the frequency was filtered.

  • A suction caisson has been widely used for anchor and foundation of offshore structures due to its broad application, simple installation, and rapid construction. In design of suction caisson foundation, the bearing capacity and the stability of soil are mainly dealt with and analysis methods for them are presented in design codes related to the foundation. On the other hand, the method for structural safety analysis of the suction caisson is not generalized, in particular for load modeling of the caisson under suction. Consequently, there are difficulties in design of the caisson cross section. For this reason, this study analyzed the magnitude and distribution of pore water pressure on inner and outer surface of the caisson using theoretical and numerical seepage analyse, and an approach to reasonably estimate the load applied to the structural analysis of the caisson was presented. Furthermore, effects of penetration depth, anisotropy of permeability, and suction pressure on the pore water pressure were analyzed.
