A damage detection method for the tripod support structure of offshore wind turbines is presented for structural health monitoring. A finite element model of a prototype tripod support structure is established and the modal properties are calculated. The degree and location of the damage are estimated based on the neural network technique using the changes of natural frequencies and mode shape due to the damage. The stress distribution occurring in the support structure is obtained by a dynamic analysis for the wind turbine system to select the output data of the neural network. The natural frequencies and mode shapes for 36 possible damage scenarios were used for the input data of the learned neural network for damage assessment. The estimated damages agreed reasonably well with the accurate ones. The presented method could be effectively applied for damage detection and structural health monitoring of various types of support structures of offshore wind turbines.
There is greater significance in identifying the incipient damages in structures at the time of their initiation as timely rectification of these minor incipient cracks can save huge maintenance cost. However, the change in the global dynamic characteristics of a structure due to these subtle damages are insignificant enough to detect using the majority of the current damage diagnostic techniques. Keeping this in view, we propose a hybrid damage diagnostic technique for detection of minor incipient damages in the structures. In the proposed automated hybrid algorithm, the raw dynamic signatures obtained from the structure are decomposed to uni-modal signals and the dynamic signature are reconstructed by identifying and combining only the uni-modal signals altered by the minor incipient damage. We use these reconstructed signals for damage diagnostics using ARMAX model. Numerical simulation studies are carried out to investigate and evaluate the proposed hybrid damage diagnostic algorithm and their capability in identifying minor/incipient damage with noisy measurements. Finally, experimental studies on a beam are also presented to compliment the numerical simulations in order to demonstrate the practical application of the proposed algorithm.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to lighten the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) structure of the KAAV (Korea Assault Amphibious Vehicle) through structural analysis. Methods: Commercially-available program (MIDAS.NFX) was used for finite element analysis. Frequency response analysis was performed through linear static and mode analyses to verify the structural stability according to the change of the structural materials. Results: Numerical simulation (linear static, mode and frequency response analyses) results showed that the safety factor of the APU was over 1.5 even under the worst case conditions. The APU made by aluminum structures was expected to be available in the military field, since every requirements in the KDS (Korean Defense Specifications) was fulfilled during the various tests and evaluations. Conclusion: The structural analysis was verified that the structural stability of the APU structure of the KAAV after change of the structural material.
The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of linearly elastic circular arches with variable cross-sections are derived and solve numerically for quadratic arches with three types of rectangular cross sections. Frequencies, mode shapes, cross-sectional load distributions, and the effects of rotatory inertia on frequencies are reported. Experimental measurements of frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes agree closely with those predicted by theory. The numerical methods presented here for computing frequencies and mode shapes are efficient and reliable.
The Thermally Stimulated Current(TSC) method has been allied to study the influence of the structural change and interface on the electrical properties of epoxy composites. Three DGBA- MeTHPA matrix model samples mixed different ratios arts silica(SiO$_2$) filled sample and silaln treating-filled sample have been studied. Above room temperature, the relaxation mode ${\alpha}$ peak associated with T$\_$g/ has been located at 110$^{\circ}C$. Below glass transition temperature(T$\_$g/), three relaxation modes are observed in all samples : a ${\beta}$ mode situated at 10$^{\circ}C$, a ${\gamma}$ mode located at -40$^{\circ}C$ and a $\delta$mode appeared in -120$^{\circ}C$, which may be due to segmental motion, side chains, substitution and terminal groups. The analysis of its fine structure indicates that constitution of elementary processes is characterized by the activation energy and relaxation time. Also the change of the molecular structure and their thermal motion are compared with the relaxation mode and conduction mechanism in TSC spectra through the dielectric properties and FTIR measurements.
The governing differential equations for free vibration of multi-step orthotropic shear plates with variably distributed mass, stiffness and viscous damping are established. It is shown that a shear plate can be divided into two independent shear bars to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the plate. The jk-th natural frequency of a shear plate is equal to the square root of the square sum of the j-th natural frequency of a shear bar and the k-th natural frequency of another shear bar. The jk-th mode shape of the shear plate is the product of the j-th mode shape of a shear bar and the k-th mode shape of another shear bar. The general solutions of the governing equations of the orthotropic shear plates with various boundary conditions are derived by selecting suitable expressions, such as power functions and exponential functions, for the distributions of stiffness and mass along the height of the plates. A numerical example demonstrates that the present methods are easy to implement and efficient. It is also shown through the numerical example that the selected expressions are suitable for describing the distributions of stiffness and mass of typical multi-storey buildings.
