  • Since the inner barrel assembly of the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 reactor vessel is a new design feature introduced instead of CEA(control element assembly) shroud assembly, the inner barrel assembly can be a significant object of structural integrity assessment. This paper covers the structural responses of top plate, which is a component of the inner barrel assembly, against the deterministic hydraulic load induced by pump pulsation and the random hydraulic load induced by turbulence of coolant. The top plate responds to the deterministic hydraulic load more than to the random hydraulic load and shows enough structural integrity. The results of this paper will be important basis for the selection of instruments and measurement location.

  • Response of harbor structure to environmental loads such as wave load, impact load, ship's contacting load, is a fundamental factor in designing of the structure's optimal configuration. In this paper, typical environmental loads against coastal structures are investigated for designing of the optimal harbor structure. Loads to be considered here are wave load, impact load and contacting load due to ship mooring. Statistical analysis for several harbor structure types under the corresponding loads is carried out, followed by investigation of effect of individual environmental load. Based on these, the optimal configuration for the harbor structure is obtained after considerable engineering process. Estimation of contacting load of the ship is suggested using effective energy concepts for the load, and analysis of structural behavior is done for the optimal designing of the structure in the particular load. A guideline for the design process of the harbor structure is established, and safety of the structure is examined by proposed scheme. For verification of the analytical approach, various steel-piled coastal structures and caissons are chosen and relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with MIDAS/GTS and ANSYS code. It is found using the Morison equation that impact load cannot be a major load in the typical harbor structure compared with the original wave load, and that configuration shape of the structure may play an important role in consideration of the response criteria.

  • In this study, the loading test and structural analysis were performed on the snow load and the results were compared. The load plates were loaded on the roof surface of the model, and structural analysis was performed under the same conditions. The result of loading test, the maximum displacement was observed in the center of the top, and the maximum stress was observed near the bottom point. Displacement and stress were found to have a high linear relationship with the load. Comparing the structural analysis results with the loading test results, the maximum displacement difference is 4.5% and the maximum stress difference is 10.2%. It is expected that closer results can be derived if the boundary conditions for the longitudinal direction of the model are clarified during experiments and analysis.

  • Structural analysis models to develop live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge should have the precision of the analysis results as well as modeling simplicity. This is due to the numerous frequency of structural analysis needed while developing live load distribution factors. In this study, an appropriate structural analysis model is selected by comparing previous researchs studies and models used in practical design. Also, the influence by the flexural stiffness of barrier and diaphragm on the live load distribution had been analyzed through comparing the numerical analysis and experimental tests. As a result, the model that the eccentric girder and the barrier and diaphragm are connected to the deck plate was appropriate in satisfying both accuracy and simplicity for structural analysis of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. However, the barrier was analyzed to have insignificant influence on the live load distribution in spite of its variation of stiffness. The eccentric diaphragm showed little influence at 25% or higher of flexural stiffness. From the results, a model that the girder is rigidly connected to the deck plate in consideration of the eccentricity, the barrier is ignored and the whole section of diaphragm is supposed to be valid without eccentricity is decided as the most appropriate structural model to develop the live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge in this study.

  • Structural integrity evaluation is important item in the aircraft certification. Recently, it is designed for limit load, material weakness about fatigue and corrosion, damage by bird strike in flight to evaluate structural integrity of aircraft. And static/fatigue analysis are performed to secure structural integrity, it was verified by static and fatigue tests. To evaluate the structural integrity of small aircraft tail, structural integrity was calculated by the finite element analysis. In the present study, finite element analysis are performed to pick out load cases in flight occurrence, and secure margin of safety to evaluate structural integrity of KC-100 tail unit. The proprieties of finite element analysis results are compared with the static structure test results. The estimation process of structural integrity for small aircraft tail may help the design.

  • As global warming accelerates due to global climate change, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has set up Emission Control Area(ECA) and encourages the use of Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG). For this reason, as the demand for LNG increases, the demand and research of related equipment also increases. In this study, one of them, the vent mast for the discharge of LNG was studied. In general, vent mast receives various loads such as wind load, earthquake load and dead load during operation. Accordingly, consideration of these loads is essential for structural design and safety evaluation of the vent mast. In this study, the structural safety of the vent mast is evaluated by performing finite element analysis. As a result, the structural safety evaluation results were analyzed based on the database of materials of the vent mast, and the stress level was analyzed to provide a design guide.

  • This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm which uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness. The equivalent nodal load represents the influence of the stiffness change such as the addition of elements, the deletion of elements, and/or the partial change of element stiffness. The nonlinear analysis of structures using the equivalent load improves the efficiency very much because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix, which needs a large amount of computation to calculate, is reused in each loading step. In this paper, the concept of nonlinear analysis using the equivalent load for the element stiffness is described and some numerical examples are provided to verify it.

  • Dynamic load models which show the practical behavior of truss bridge subjected to moving train load are presented. Three basically approaches are available for evaluating structural response to dynamic effects : moving force, moving mass, and influence moving force and mass. Simple warren truss bridge model is selected in this research, and idealized lumped mass system, modelled as a planar structure. In the process of dynamic analysis, the uncoupled equation of motion is derived from simultaneous equation of the motion of truss bridge and moving train load. The solution of the uncoupled equations of motion is solved by Newmark-$\beta$ method. The results show that dynamic response of moving mass and static analysis considering the impact factor specified in the present railway bridge code was nearly the same. Generally, the dynamic response of moving force is somewhat greater than that of moving mass. The dynamic load models which are presented by this study are obtained relatively adequate load model when apply to a truss bridge.

  • In this study, the structural deflection analysis of robot manipulator for removing nuclear fuel rod from nuclear reactor vessel is performed by using general purpose finite element code (ANSYS). The structural deflection analysis results reported in this study is very required for the accurate design of robot system. The structural deflection analysis for the manipulator's structural status at which the gripper grasps and draws up the nuclear fuel rod is done, For this beginning structural status of robot manipulator's removing motion, the reaction forces at each joint have static maximum values as reported in the reference(6), and so these forces may cause the maximum deflection of robot structure. The structural deflection analysis is performed for selected four working cases of the proposed structural model and results on deformation, stress for the manipulator's solid body and the deflection at the end of robot manipulator's gripper are calculated. And further, the same analysis is performed for the slenderer manipulator with cross section reduced by one-fifth of each side length of proposed model. The analysis is performed not only for the nuclear fuel rod with weight load of 300kg but also for nuclear fuel rods with weight loads of 100kg, 200kg, 400kg and 500kg. The static structural deflection analysis results show that the deflection value increases as the load increases and the largest value (corresponding to the weight load of 500kg in case 1) is much smaller than the gap distance between nuclear fuel rods. but the largest value for the slenderer manipulator is almost as large as the gap distance, Hence, conclusively, the proposed manipulator's structural model is acceptably safe for mechanical design of robot system.

  • The CANFLEX fuel bundle has been developed by KAERI/AECL jointly to facilitate the use of various fuel cycles in CANDU-6 reactor. The structural analysis of the fuel bundles by hydraulic drag force is performed to evaluate the fuel integrity during the refuelling service. The present analysis method is newly developed for the structural integrity valuation by studying FEM modelling for the fuel bundles in a fuel channel. As compared the results of the mechanical strength test the displacement value of endplate given by analysis results shoo6 to be good agreement within 15% under the maximum design drag load. As the results of analysis, it is shown to keep the structural integrity of CANFLEX fuel bundles under hydraulic drag load during the refuelling service.
