  • The objective of this paper is to clarify the architectural characteristics of the Korean-Western eclectic houses at Ojeong-dong Missionary Village in Daejeon city, focused on the spatial and structural changes due to eclecticism. The consequences of the comparative analysis between the eclectic houses and two reference buildings, Myeongjae residence and Moore house, are as follows. The diverse aspects due to eclecticism can be summarized as two concepts; transformation and simplification. The transformation has appeared in the characteristic spatial elements such as an-madang, entrance and corridor, in the territory organization and the connection between building and yard, and in the roof and wall structures. The simplification has appeared in the layering of the building space, and in the joint of roof and wall. The methods of eclecticism and the resultant aspects from them that are clarified through this study are expected to be referred in examining the new possibilities of the hanok.

  • The aim of this study is to analyse the relationships between the usefulness of information literacy education and life satisfaction on the older adults in Korea. How the information literacy education impact on the information activities is an additional research question. To achieve these objectives, data were collected through the 227 respondents of over 50-years-old adults in Korea and analysed using AMOS for the structural equation modeling. In this study, information literacy education was measured by it's usefulness aspects, and information activities were measured by it's convenience aspects. The results showed that the information literacy education influences positively both in life satisfaction and in information activities.

  • Several aspects influence corrosive processes in reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as environmental conditions, structural geometry and mechanical properties. Since these aspects present large randomnesses, probabilistic models allow a more accurate description of the corrosive phenomena. Besides, the definition of limit states in the reliability assessment requires a proper mechanical model. In this context, this study proposes a straightforward methodology for the mechanical-probabilistic modelling of RC structures subjected to reinforcements' corrosion. An improved damage approach is proposed to define the limit states for the probabilistic modelling, considering three main degradation phenomena: concrete cracking, rebar yielding and rebar corrosion caused either by chloride or carbonation mechanisms. The stochastic analysis is evaluated by the Monte Carlo simulation method due to the computational efficiency of the Lumped Damage Model for Corrosion (LDMC). The proposed mechanical-probabilistic methodology is implemented in a computational framework and applied to the analysis of a simply supported RC beam and a 2D RC frame. Curves illustrate the probability of failure evolution over a service life of 50 years. Moreover, the proposed model allows drawing the probability of failure map and then identifying the critical failure path for progressive collapse analysis. Collapse path changes caused by the corrosion phenomena are observed.

  • This paper traces the drafting of the new EN 1991-1-4 Eurocode 1 - Actions on structures - Part 1-4: General actions - Wind actions within Mandate M/515 of the European Commission to CEN, for the evolution of structural Eurocodes towards their Second Generation. Work of the Project Team started in August 2017 and ended in April 2020, with delivery of a final draft for public enquiry. The revised document contains several modifications with respect to the existing 2005 version, and new sections were added, covering aspect not dealt with in the previous version. It has a renovated structure, with a main text limited in size and containing only fundamental material; all the remaining information, either normative or informative is arranged into thirteen annexes. Common to other Eurocode Parts, general requests from CEN were those of reducing the number of Nationally Determined Parameters and of enhancing the ease of use. More specific requests were those of (a) the drafting of a European design wind map, (b) improving wind models, (c) reviewing force and pressure coefficients, (d) reviewing the procedures for evaluation of the dynamic response, as well as (e) making editorial improvements aimed at a more user friendly document. The author had the privilege to serve as Project Team member for the drafting of the new document, and this paper brings his personal view concerning some general aspects of wind code writing, and some more specific aspects about the particular document.

  • This paper examines the flexural performance of concrete beams reinforced with glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars under fatigue loading. Experiments were carried out on concrete beams of size 1500×200×100 mm reinforced with 10 mm and 13 mm diameter GFRP bars under fatigue loading. Experimental investigations revealed that fatigue loading affects both strength and serviceability properties of GFRP reinforced concrete. Experimental results indicated that (i) the concrete beams experienced increase in deflection with increase in number of cycles and failed suddenly due to snapping of rebars and (ii) the fatigue life of concrete beams drastically decreased with increase in stress level. Analytical model presented a procedure for predicting the deflection of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars under cyclic loading. Deflection of concrete beams was computed by considering the aspects such as stiffness degradation, force equilibrium equations and effective moment of inertia. Nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was performed on concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars. Appropriate constitutive relationships for concrete and GFRP bars were considered in the numerical modelling. Concrete non linearity has been accounted through concrete damage plasticity model available in ABAQUS. Deflection versus number of cycles obtained experimentally for various beams was compared with the analytical and numerical predictions. It was observed that the predicted values are comparable (less than 20% difference) with the corresponding experimental observations.

  • The following improvement plans are suggested in this study to facilitate implementing a pilot project for building a disaster resistant community organized by the National Emergency Management Agency in 2008, and ultimately to expand the project nation-wide. Regarding legislative aspects, legal grounds should be established such as devising a new clause in the Counter Measure for Natural Disaster for assigning a disaster resistant community or city, and devising a tentatively named "Act for Disaster Resistant Community Project" as a local governance regulation. Regarding administrative aspects, a project master plan focused on active participation of the local residents should be designed. Moreover, a certain amount of the project budget should be alloted not only to structural contents but also to non-structural contents. Regarding organizational aspects, an education program for training local disaster prevention leaders should be actively promoted and a local disaster prevention governance system should also be established among official and inofficial local organizations. Furthermore a preemptive consulting system with disaster prevention experts as well as an evaluation system to monitor the project implementation process should be introduced.

  • Advancements in materialistic life styles and increasing awareness about adverse climatic changes and its negative effects on human life have been the driving force of finding new and clean sources of energy. Wind power has become technologically mature and commercially acceptable on global scale. However, fossil fuels have been the major sources of energy in most countries, renewable energy (particularly wind) is now booming worldwide. To cope with this wind energy technology, various related aspects have to be understood by the scientific, engineering, utility, and contracting communities. This study is an effort towards the understanding of the (i) wind turbine blade and tower structural stability issues, (ii) turbine blade and tower failures and remedial measures, (iii) weather and seismic effects on turbine blade and tower failures, (iv) gear box failures, and (v) turbine blade and tower failure analysis tools.

  • 4-Aminobutyrate aminotransferase is a key enzyme of the 4-aminobutyric acid shunt. It converts the neurotransmitter 4-aminobutyric acid to succinic semialdehyde. In order to study the structural and functional aspects of catalytically active Cys residues of pig brain 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase, we purified the active form in E. coli by coproduction of thioredoxin. The structural arrangement for functional requirements of a dimeric protein using a bifunctional sultbydryl reagent was then characterized, and the spatial proximity between the essential SH groups and a cofactor (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate) binding site was determined. The bifunctional sultbydryl reagent DMDS reacted with the enzyme at the ratio of one molecule per enzyme dimer. This resulted in an approximately 50% loss of enzymatic activity. The spatial proximity of the distance between the essential SH groups and the cofactor-binding site was determined by the energy transfer measurement technique. The result (approximate 20 ${\AA}$) suggested that cross-linking of two sulfhydryl groups with DMDS is not near a PLP binding site.

  • In these days, High-strength steel prevails throughout the construction fields for the benefit of structural and economical aspects. But high-strength steel is used by the simple calculation of flexural capacities for the purpose of reducing flexural reinforcement. So, this paper is mainly focused on the shear behavior of high-strength steel reinforced concrete beams without stirrups comparing with normal-strength steel reinforced concrete beams. Specimens were made and tested with the experimental parameters, such as steel yield strength, reinforcement ratios and minimum shear reinforcement. The main result was that not only area but also the yield strength of flexural reinforcement should be considered to predict the shear capacities of concrete beams. In addition, the experimental results were simulated by modified compression field theory analysis program, RESPONSE 2000. A good agreement was achieved between the test results and program analyses.

  • Two initial models of cold-adapted lipase PsLip1 have been constructed, based on homology with the bacterial lipases Chromobacterium viscosum (CvLip) and Pseudomonas cepacia (PcLip), whose X-ray structures have been solved and refined to high resolution. The mature polypeptide chains of these lipases have 84% similarity. The models of Mod1 and Mod2 have been compared with the tertiary structures of CvLip and PcLip, respectively, and analyzed in terms of stabilizing interactions. Several structural aspects that are believed to contribute to protein stability have been compared: the number of conserved salt bridges, aromatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, helix capping, and disulfide bridges. The 3-dimensional structural model of PsLip1 has been constructed in order to elucidate the structural reasons for the decreased thermostability of the enzyme in comparison with its mesophilic counterparts.
