A contact strip shape of a high speed train pantograph system was optimized with CFD to increase the aerodynamic performance and stability of contact force, and the results were validated by a wind tunnel test. For design of the optimal contact strip shape, a Kriging model and genetic algorithm were used to ensure the global search of the optimal point and reduce the computational cost. To enhance the performance and robustness of the contact strip for high speed pantograph, the drag coefficient and the fluctuation of the lift coefficient along the angle of attack were selected as design objectives. Aerodynamic forces were measured by a load cell and HWA (Hot Wire Anemometer) was used to measure the Strouhal number of wake flow. PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was adopted to visualize the flow fields. The optimized contact strip shape was shown a lower drag with smaller fluctuation of vertical lift force than the general shaped contact strip. And the acoustic noise source strength of the optimized contact strip was also reduced. Finally, the reduction amount of drag and noise was assessed when the optimized contact strip was applied to three dimensional pantograph system.

An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using the constant temperature anemometer and through flow visualization. Previous report(Boo et al., 2001) shows that there are three different modes in vortex shedding behavior. This paper is focused on the identification of the physical reasons why the difference iss occured in vortex shedding. The through flow velocity crossing fins decreases as increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch mainly due to the flow resistence. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by velocity distribution around fin tube, especially by the velocity gradient. The velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Those differences in velocity gradients generate different vortex shedding mechanism.

The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the near wake(X/d=5.0) of a circular cylinder with serrated fins. Velocity of fluid which flow through fins decreases as increasing fin height and freestream velocity and decreasing fin pitch. Therefore the velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. The discontinuity of the streamwise velocity gradient is observed near the fin edge and causes significant changes in V-component velocity distribution in the near wake. This change attributes to the differences in Strouhal number and entraintment flow behavior. Increased turbulent intensity around a circular cylinder due to the serrated fins and entrainment flow are important factors for the recovery of velocity defect. The widths of velocity and turbulent intensity distribution of fin tubes are wider than those of a circular cylinder. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with a hydraulic diameter which is proposed in this paper are in closer agreement with those of a circular cylinder.

Splitting algorithms of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using P1P1/P2P1 finite element formulation are newly proposed. P1P1 formulation allocates velocity and pressure at the same nodes, while P2P1 formulation allocates pressure only at the vertex nodes and velocity at both the vertex and mid nodes. For comparison of the elapsed time and accuracy of the two methods, they have been applied to the well-known benchmark problems. The three cases chosen are the two-dimensional steady and unsteady flows around a fixed cylinder, decaying vortex, and impinging slot jet. It is shown that the proposed P2P1 semi-splitting method performs better than the conventional P1P1 splitting method in terms of both accuracy and computation time.

Oscillating foil propulsion, the engineering application of fish-like movement of a hydrofoil, has received in recent decades as a possible competitor for propellers. The oscillating foil produces an effective angle of attack, resulting in a normal force vector with thrust and lift components, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. We have explored propulsion hydrodynamics as a concept in wake flow pattern. The present study has been examined various conditions such as oscillating frequencies and amplitudes in NACA0010 profile. Flow visualizations showed that high thrust was associated with the generation of moderately strong vortices, which subsequently combine with trailing-edge vorticity leading to the formation of a reverse $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street. Vortex generation was inherent to jet production and playeda fundamental role in the wake dynamics. And it was shown that the strong thrust coefficient obtained as the Strouhal number was larger.
The blockage effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of tall buildings is a fundamental issue in wind tunnel test but has rarely been addressed. To evaluate the blockage effects on the aerodynamic forces on a square tall building and flow field peripherally, large eddy simulations (LES) were performed on a 3D square cylinder with an aspect ratio of 6:1 under the uniform smooth inflow and turbulent atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) inflow generated by the narrowband synthesis random flow generator (NSRFG). First, a basic case at a blockage ratio (BR) of 0.8% was conducted to validate the adopted numerical methodology. Subsequently, simulations were systematically performed at 6 different BRs. The simulation results were compared in detail to illustrate the differences induced by the blockage, and the mechanism of the blockage effects under turbulent inflow was emphatically analysed. The results reveal that the pressure coefficients, the aerodynamic forces, and the Strouhal number increase monotonically with BRs. Additionally, the increase of BR leads to more coherence of the turbulent structures and the higher intensity of the vortices in the vicinity of the building. Moreover, the blockage effects on the aerodynamic forces and flow field are more significant under smooth inflow than those under turbulent inflow.
In this paper, the cavitating flows around a hydrofoil have been numerically investigated by using a 2-d multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. A dual-time stepping method and the Gauss-Seidel iteration were used for unsteady time integration. The phase change rate between the liquid and vapor phases was determined by Merkle's cavitation model based on the difference between local and vapor pressure. Steady state calculations were made for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil at several flow conditions. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the pressure coefficient on a hydrofoil surface. Additional calculation was made for cloud cavitation around the hydrofoil. The observation of the vapor structure, such as cavity size and shape, was made, and the flow characteristics around the cavity were analyzed. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the frequency and the Strouhal number of cavity oscillation.

In the fully developed pipe flow, when jet is injected in cross to the flow there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods and frequency analysis using a hot-wire anemometer. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.3 m/s ~ 1.2 m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number, R$\sub$p/, based on the pipe diameter is 2.25 * 10$\^$3/ ~ 9.02 * 10$\^$3/. The velocity ratio (R), jet velocity/cross flow velocity, is chosen from 2 to 10. A circular cylinder is placed in the pipe instead of jet to observe the vortex shedding from the solid body. To compare the jet and circular cylinder flow, the vortical structure is analyzed in both cases and the structure of vortices and the origin of its formation are investigated, especially. The vortex shedding of the dominant coherent structure is compared between the jet flow and the circular cylinder flow. In the case of the jet flow, the Strouhal numbers are different depending on the existence of the upright vortex as well as the velocity ratio (R).

The effect of the configuration of the nozzle and the impinging surface on the characteristics of the hole-tones has been experimentally investigated. It is found that the plate-tone is a special case of hole-tones, where the hole diameter is zero. The jet velocity range for hole-tones is divided into the low velocity region associated with laminar jet and the high velocity region with turbulent jet. The frequency of the tone is that for the shear layer instability at the nozzle exit or that attainable by a cascade of vortex pairing process with increase of the impinging distance. When the distance is longer than one diameter the frequency decreases to the terminal value near the preferred frequency of the column mode instability, in the range 0.23< $St_d$<0.53, where $St_d$ is the Strouhal number defined by $fd/U_J$, f the frequency, d the nozzle diameter, and $U_J$ the exit velocity. While the convection speed of the downstream vortex, in the present study, is almost constant at low-speed laminar jet, it increases with distance at high-speed turbulent jet. As the frequency increases, the convection speed decreases in the low frequency range corresponding to the preferred mode, in agreement with the existing experimental data for a free jet.
Cavitation on an axi-symmetric hemispherical head-form body was studied using an Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. To consider compressibility effects on the vapor phase and cavity interface, a pressure-based compressible flow CFD code was developed. To validate the developed CFD code, cavitating flow around the hemispherical head-form body was simulated using pressure-based incompressible and compressible CFD codes and validated against existing experimental data in the three-way comparison. The cavity shedding behavior, length of re-entrant jet, drag history, and Strouhal number of the hemispherical head-form body were compared between two CFD codes. The results, in this paper, suggested that the computations of cavitating flow with compressibility effects improve the description of cavity dynamics.
