  • The rapid growth in communication technology has led to the development of effective ways of sharing ideas and information in the form of speech and images. Understanding this information has become an important research issue and drawn the attention of many researchers. Text in a digital image contains much important information regarding the scene. Detecting and extracting this text is a difficult task and has many challenging issues. The main challenges in extracting text from natural scene images are the variation in the font size, alignment of text, font colors, illumination changes, and reflections in the images. In this paper, we propose a connected component based method to automatically detect the text region in natural images. Since text regions in mages contain mostly repetitions of vertical strokes, we try to find a pattern of closely packed vertical edges. Once the group of edges is found, the neighboring vertical edges are connected to each other. Connected regions whose geometric features lie outside of the valid specifications are considered as outliers and eliminated. The proposed method is more effective than the existing methods for slanted or curved characters. The experimental results are given for the validation of our approach.

  • This paper presents a nonlinearly modulated digital actuator (NMDA) for producing nano-precision digital stroke. The NMDA, composed of a digital microactuator and a nonlinear micromechanical modulator, purifies the stroke of the digital actuator in order to generate the high-precision displacement output required for nano-positioning devices. The function and concept of the nonlinear micromechanical modulator are equivalent to those of the nonlinear electrical limiters. The linear and nonlinear modulators, having an identical input and output strokes of 15.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 5.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, are designed, fabricated and tested, respectively. The linear and nonlinear modulators are linked to identical digital actuators in order to compare the characteristics of the linearly modulated microactuator (LMDA) and NMDA. In addition, an identical linear modulator is attached to the output ports of LMDA and NMDA. The NMDA shows the repeatability of 12.3$\pm$2.9nm, superior to that of 27.8$\pm$2.9nm achieved by LMDA. When the identical linear modulator is connected to LMDA and NMDA, the final modulated output from NMDA shows the repeatability of 10.3$\pm$7.2nm, superior to that of 15.7$\pm$7.7nm from LMDA. We experimentally verify the displacement purifying capability of the nonlinear mechanical modulator, applicable to nano-precision positioning devices and systems.

  • Zanthoxylum piperitum D.C. (ZP) peels has been used as a natural spice and herb medicine for hypertension reduction, for strokes, and for its anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant activity. However, the anti-inflammatory mechanisms employed by ZP have yet to be completely understood. In this study, we elucidate the anti-inflammatory mechanism of ZP in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. We evaluated the effects of ZP in LPS-induced levels of inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and caspase-1 using ELISA. The expression levels of inflammatory-related genes, including cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), were assayed by Western blot analysis. We elucidated the effect of ZP on nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation by means of a luciferase activity assay. The findings of this study demonstrated that ZP inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokine and PGE2 and inhibited the increased levels of COX-2 and iNOS caused by LPS. Additionally, we showed that the anti-inflammatory effect of ZP arises by suppressing the activation of NF-κB and caspase-1 in LPS- induced RAW264.7 cells. These results provide novel insights into the pharmacological actions of ZP as a potential candidate for development of new drugs to treat inflammatory diseases.

  • This paper presents Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) as a tool to support the study of paintings and authentication. Manufacturing techniques of the artist are reviewed through the comparison between liberal perspectives and digital imaging techniques. In this study, RTI was applied to focus on the detailed textural information of eight paintings by Korean artist Lee Ji-ho. The RTI result visualizes shallow reliefs of brush strokes and different mediums on the surface technically enhanced through imaging filters, and these morphological textures on the surface act as a key factor in understanding the characteristics of the artist. The surface morphology and art criticism work as qualitative indicators to analyze the change of artistic techniques through time, and the usage of different mediums. The results of this study confirm that the RTI technique can be used as an analysis device in the study of paintings.

  • Lately, due to increasing engine output by high supercharging, heavy crankshaft and propeller mass, as well as long strokes attended with the reduced crankshaft axial stiffness, the critical crankshaft axial vibration has frequently appeared in maneuvering range of the engine. Some investigators have developed calculating methods of natural frequencies and resonant amplitudes for crankshaft axial vibrations. But their reliabilities are uncertain as the estimated crankshaft axial stiffness are incorrect. The calculating procedure of these natural frequencies is practically analogous to the classical calculation of torsional vibration frequencies, except for an important difference due to the relationship of the axial stiffness of a crank and the angle between the crank and other, especially the adjacent, cranks. In this paper, 6 calculation formulae of crankshaft axial stiffness already published and a theoretically- developed one by authors are checked by comparing their calculating results with those measured values of one model crankshafat and three full-scale actual crankshafts. Also, the calculating methods of the crankshaft axial free vibration are investigated and their computer programs are developed. Finally, those developed computer programs are applied to calculating one model crankshaft and two full-scale actual crankshafts of ship's propulsion engines and their calculated results are compared with those measured values.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the speech duration in Korean-speaking aphasics. Five patients with nonfluent aphasia (2 with traumatic brain injury and 3 with strokes) and five normal adults participated in this experiment. The mean age in patients with nonfluent aphasia was $45.8\pm2.3$ years and $47.4\pm2.3$ years for the normal adults. The Computerized Speech Lab was used to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the subjects. Voice onset time, vowel duration, total duration, hold and consonant duration were evaluated for the monosyllabic and the polysyllabic words. The patients with nonfluent aphasia did not show the voicing bar on hold area, however, it was seen in the normal persons in the intervocalic position. Explosion duration of glottalized stops in the intervocalic position was significantly prolonged in nonfluent aphasics in comparison with the normal persons. This suggestes that the laryngeal adjustment is disturbed in these patients. Consonant duration, vowel duration, and total duration of the polysyllabic words were significantly longer in the patients with nonfluent aphasia than those of the normal persons. These results demonstrate the disturbances in controlling articulatory muscles during sound production in patients with nonfluent aphasia. The objective and quantitative analysis based on the acoustic characteristics of nonfluent aphasics, will be very useful in therapeutic planning and on the the effects of speech therapy.

  • We introduce a new method of painterly rendering. Instead of using the gradient direction of the source image to generate a brush stroke, we extract regions that can be drawn in one stroke using MHN filtering followed by identification of connected components, and make a brush stroke from each, based on an approximation to the medial axis. This method results in realistic-looking brush strokes of varying width that have an irregular directions where necessary.

  • The incremental forming process employs several tens or hundreds of continuous local strokes, so the entire process is difficult to analyze due to much computation time and large computer memory. The objective of this work is to propose a new numerical scheme of the finite element method, automatic expansion of domain (AED), and to reduce computation time and computer memory. In the AED scheme, an effective analysis domain in each local forming step is defined and then the domain is automatically expanded in accordance with the repeated process. In order to verify the validity of the criterion for the AED scheme and the applicability of the AED scheme, two-dimensional incremental plane-strain forging process is first analyzed using the proposed scheme with various criteria and full domain. In addition, three-dimensional incremental radial forging process is analyzed to verify the applicability of the proposed scheme to a practical incremental forging process.
