In this study, a finite-element surface wave simulation using an effective elastic constant (EEC) was developed to calculate the Rayleigh wave velocity change and polarization change in aluminum, steel, and concrete under uniaxial stress. Under stress, an isotropic medium behaves like an anisotropic material during the wave propagation. The EEC is an equivalent anisotropic stiffness matrix which was derived to simulate the acoustoelastic effect using classical finite-element software. The vertical and horizontal surface displacements located 8-mm from a 1-㎲ excitation load were used to find the acoustoelastic coefficients kv and kp and compared to an analytical scheme. It was found that kv for aluminum and concrete matched within 4% of the analytical solution. The finite-element simulation showed that the Rayleigh wave arrival time for concrete and aluminum was greatly influenced by the stress level. Thus, predicting the stress level using concrete and aluminum's acoustoelastic effect is applicable.

In this study, the failure probability of the degraded LP turbine blade steel was performed using the Monte Carlo simulation to apply variation of applied stress and strength. For this purpose, applied stress under the service condition of steady state was obtained by theoretical stress analysis and the maximum Von-Mises stress was 219MPa. The fatigue strength under rotating-bending load was evaluated by the staircase method. Furthermore, 3-parameter Weibull distribution was found to be most appropriate among assumed distributions when the probabilistic distributions of tensile and fatigue strength were determined by the proposed analysis. The failure probability with various loading conditions was derived from the strength-stress interference model and the characteristic factor of safety was also estimated.

The use of ceramic inserts in hot extrusion dies offers significant technical and economic advantages over other forms of manufacture. In this paper, process simulation and stress analysis are thus combined during the design, and a data exchange program has been developed that enables optimal design of the dies taking into account the elastic deflections generated in shrink fitting the die inserts and that caused by the stresses generated in the process. The shrink fit analysis has been performed that enables optimal design of the dies taking into account the elastic deflections which generated in shrink fitting the die inserts and that caused by the stresses generated in the process and by using DEFORM software for process analysis. This data can be processed as load input data for a finite element die-stress analysis. Process simulation and stress analysis are thus combined during the die design. The stress analysis of the dies is used to determine the stress conditions on the ceramic insert by considering contact and interference effects under both mechanical and thermal loads. The results are compared with the experimental ones for verification.
The lifetime of power train components can be improved dramatically by finding crack initiation points with suitable software tools and optimization of the critical areas. With increasing capacities of computers the prediction of the lifetime for components by numerical methods gets more and more important. This paper discusses some applications of the outstanding fatigue simulation program FEMFAT supporting the assessment of uniaxially and multiaxially loaded components (as well as welding seams and spot joints). The theory applied in FEMFAT differs in some aspects from classical approaches like the nominal stress concept or the local one and can be characterized by the term "influence parameter method". The specimen S/N-curve is locally modified by different influence parameters as stress-gradient to take into account notch effects, mean-stress influence which is quantified by means of a Haigh-diagram, surface roughness and treatments, temperature, technological size, etc. It is possible to consider plastic deformations resulting in mean-stress rearrangements. The dynamic loading of power train components is very often multiaxial, e.g. the stress state at each time is not proportional to one single stress state. Hence, the directions of the principal axes vary with time. We will present the way how such complex load situations can be handled with FEMFAT by the examples of a crank case and a gear box.

The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied the effect of cement displacement resulting environmental ageing parameters on porcelain insulator mechanical properties for transmission line by simulation (ANSYS/NASTRAN program) and test methods. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growth affects severely to be mechanical failure ageing.
In the process of mining closely spaced coal seams, the problem of roadway arrangement in lower coal seams has long been a concern. By means of mechanical model calculation and numerical simulation postprocessing, the distribution of the stress deviator below the floor of a goaf and the evolution of the stress deviator in the vertical and horizontal directions are studied under the influence of horizontal stress. The results of this theoretical study and numerical simulation show that the stress deviator decreases exponentially with increasing depth from the floor below the coal side. With the increase in the horizontal stress coefficient λ, the stress deviator concentration area shifts. The stress deviator is concentrated within 10 m below the goaf and 15 m laterally from the coal side; thus, the magnitude of the surrounding rock stress deviator should be considered when planning the construction of a roadway in this area.
The cold rolling conditions for the ultra thin steel for tension mask are very important because the residual stress that affects the flatness of strip is generate during the cold rolling. The residual stress in the sheet causes etching curls when it suffers perforation process. The residual stress through the thickness. To estimate the residual stress and deformation due to etching curl. FEM analysis is performed. Numerical simulation employ a ANSY5 5.6 and an elastic-plastic constitutive equation. The simulation results indicate the distribution of residual stress in the rolled sheet can be controlled by selecting the rolling conditions properly.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the liquefaction cyclic shear stress ratio considering the soil uncertainty. In this study, the probabilistic ground response analysis and the cyclic shear stress ratio analysis for the liquefaction potential evaluation are performed considering the soil variability. The statistical properties of input ground parameters were analyzed to investigate the parameters affecting the seismic response analysis. The Probabilistic analysis was carried out by Monte Carlo Simulation method. The ground response analysis was performed considering the soil variability and the probability distribution characteristics of the ground acceleration. The probability distribution of the peak ground acceleration by seismic characteristics was presented. The differences of liquefaction shear stress ratio results according to soil variability were compared and analyzed. The maximum acceleration of the ground by the deterministic method was analyzed to be overestimation of the ground amplification phenomenon. Also, the shear stress ratio was overestimated.

Vehicle components such as lower control arm are usually affected by heat during the welding process. As a result, residual stress is generated, which has much effect on mechanical performances such as crashworthiness and durability. In this study, the residual stress in lower control arm has been measured by the x-ray diffraction method and been analyzed by finite element methods. Heat transfer during seam weld process has been calculated and used in calculating thermal deformation with temperature dependent material properties. High residual stress has been found at vertical wall both by measurement and simulation. The simulation also showed the residual stress re-distribution when the component is subjected to cyclic loading condition.

Stress-strength reliability problems arise frequently in applied statistics and related fields. In the context of reliability, the stress-strength model describes the life of a component, which has a random strength X and is subjected to random stress Y. The component fails at the instant that the stress applied to it exceeds the strength and the component will function satisfactorily whenever X > Y. The problem of estimation the reliability parameter in a stress-strength model R = P[Y < X], when X and Y are two independent two-parameter Lindley random variables is considered in this paper. The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and Bayes estimator of R are obtained. Also, different confidence intervals of R are obtained. Simulation study is performed to compare the different proposed estimation methods. Example in real data is used as practical application of the proposed procedure.
