  • In this work, the effect of aminized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH-MWNTs) on the mechanical interfacial properties of epoxy nanocomposites was investigated by means of fracture toughness, critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$), and impact strength testing, and their morphology was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the incorporation of amine groups onto MWNTs was confirmed by the FT-IR and Raman spectra. The mechanical interfacial properties of the epoxy nanocomposites were remarkably improved with increasing the NH-MWNT content. It was probably attributed to the strong physical interaction between amine groups of NH-MWNTs and epoxide groups of epoxy resins. The SEM micrographs showed that NH-MWNTs were uniformly embed and bonded with epoxy resins, resulted in the prevention of the deformation and crack propagation in the NH-MWNTs/epoxy nanocomposites.

  • This work has been investigated the ralationship between single surface crack length and crack depth have influence on the fatigue life. The simulation based on experimental results of 2.25 Cr-1Mo steel at various crack configuration ratios has enabled successful prediction of fatigue life at room temperature. The effect of crack depth should be considered for predicting fatigue crack growth rates as well as that of surface crack length. It is also shwn that the crack growth mechanisms are in good agreement with expreimental data according to the interaction of crack length and crack depth.

  • Fatigue life and retardtion behavior after through-thickness were examined experimentally by using a CT specimen and surface-cracked specimen. The material used was 3% Ni-Cr-Mo steel. The fatigue crack shape before through-thickness is almost semicircular, and the measured aspect ratio is larger than the value obtained by calculation using the K value proposed by Newman-Raju. It is found that the crack growth behavior on the back side after through-ghickness is unique and can be divided into three stages a, b and c. A retardation parameter has been used successfully to predict the growth of cracks in specimen, and in this time, retardation factor is 4.3. By using the crack propagation rule considering on retardation state and the K value proposed by the authors, the remarkable crack growth behavior and the change in crack shape can be evaluated quantitatively.

  • For mechanical drive steam turbines, the investigation results of corrosion fatigue phenomena in the transient zone are introduced, including basic phenomena on expansion line and actual design and damage experience. These results were analyzed from the standpoint of stress intensity during the start of cracking. In order to resolve such problems, preventive coating and blade design methods against fouling and corrosive environments are developed. Detailed evaluation test results are given for coating performance using a unique test procedure simulating fouling phenomena and washing conditions. Finally, the results of the successful modification of internals and on-line washing results on site are introduced.

  • In this studies, curing behavior and mechanical properties of tetrafunctional epoxy resin (4EP)/ fluorine-containing epoxy resin (FEP) blend systems was investigated with 4, 4'-diaminodiphenol methane (DDM) as a curing agent. The cure activation energies $(E_a)$) were studied by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's equation with dynamic DSC method. For the fracture toughness of the casting specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and the specific fracture energy ($G_{IC}$) were determined by fracture toughness test.

  • In confined coaxial jets, the flow-mixing characteristics depend on the initial conditions at the nozzle outlet such as velocity ratio and nozzle radius ratio. In this study, nozzle ratio(inner/outer) was 0.3. Longitudinal axial velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress were measured by CTA. Measurements were made from the duct inlet to the region where similarity solution could exist. This study investigated flow charicteristics according to the variation of similitude parameter which was derived from the theory of Craya-Cutet. The range of similarity region depends on the variation of the similitude patameter. The form factor obtained from the axial velocity profile in the similarity region was constant. The higher the similitude parameter, the wider the spread rate of the jets. Due to this fact, the similarity conditions developed more quickly and the region where the similarity holds became narrow. Present experimental data confirmed the validity of Craya-Curtet theory.

  • For a rotating body with cracks, the new energy release rate equation is presented. The derived equation is different from the other researcher's results. It is a path-independent integral which excluded the derivatives of displacements near the crack tip, thereby improving the numerical accuracy of the energy release rate computation. Moreover, as the equation was derived on basis of the energy principle and non-linear elasticity without assumptions, it can applied to the cracked body with arbitrary shape under elastic-plastic deformation. Several examples are treated to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method compared to existing methods.

  • The energy release rate for an interface crack in anisotropic dissimilar materials was obtained by the eigenfunction expansion method and also was analyzed numerically by the reciprocal work contour integral method. It was shown that the results for orthotropic dissimilar materials are consistent with the other worker's results.

  • The higher order singularities[1] are systematically examined, and discussed are their complementarity relation with the nonsingular eigenfunctions and their relations to the configurational forces like J-integral and M-integral. By use of the so-called two state conservation laws(Im and Kim[2]) or interaction energy, originally proposed by Eshelby[3] and later treated by Chen and Shield[4], the intensities of the higher order singularities are calculated, and their roles in elasticplastic fracture are investigated. Numerical examples are presented for illustration.

  • This paper describes a probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. In the analysis of CANDU pressure tube, it is necessary to perform the PFM analyses based on statistical consideration of flaw generation time. A depth and an aspect ratio of initial semi-elliptical surface crack, a fracture toughness value, delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity, and flaw generation time are assumed to be probabilistic variables. In all the analyses, degradation of fracture toughness due to neutron irradiation is considered. Also, the failure criteria considered are plastic collapse, unstable fracture and crack penetration. For the crack growth by DHC, the failure probability was evaluated in due consideration of flaw generation time.
