Sex Difference in the Effect of Body Mass Index and Stress on High-Risk Diabetes Mellitus in Korean Adults (한국 성인의 고 위험 당뇨에 대한 스트레스와 체질량 지수의 성별 차이)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate sex differences in the effect of body mass index (BMI) and stress on high-risk diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: Secondary analysis of data from 4,271 male and female adults participating in the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015 was performed. The participants were evaluated using questionnaires and blood tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ${\chi}^2-test$, and multiple logistic regression analysis (SPSS 24.0). Results: To identify sexspecific effects, interaction variables were included. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level was higher in men than in women, and the risk of DM decreased 0.31 times in women compared to that in men. As age increased, the odds of risk DM increased 1.03. The risk of DM increased 1.99 times in overweight individuals and 2.79 times for obese individuals compared to that in individuals with normal weight. Stress levels were higher in women than in men, but stress is not an influential factor in high-risk DM. In age-sex interaction, the odds of risk DM increased 1.02 in women compared to that in men as age increased. Conclusion: HbA1c level was affected by age-sex interaction, and age and sex should be considered in the application of HbA1c in the diagnosis of DM.

The Convergent Effect of Sleep Quality among Stress, Smartphone Addiction, Social support, and Physiological Index of Adolescents (청소년의 성별에 따른 스트레스, 스마트폰 중독, 사회적 지지, 생리적 지수가 수면의 질에 미치는 융복합적 영향)

  • This study aimed to identify the effect of stress, smartphone addiction, Social support, and physiological index on quality of sleep (PSQI) and to investigate the affecting factors according to sex in highschool students. The data were collected from 210 subjects from February 6 to 16, 2018 using a structured self-report questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression with SPSS WIN Version 24.0. The quality of sleep was lower in female students than in male students. In multiple regression analysis, Awake time, School grades stress were significant predictors and explained 29.6% of quality of sleep for male students. In female students, Smart phone start age, School grades stress, Disability of daily living and Appraisal social support were significant predictors and explained 24.3% of quality of sleep. Therefore, it is expected to be used as basic data for the development of intervention programs that can solve the factors affecting the quality of sleep of adolescents, thereby helping the healthy development of youth.

Relationship between psychological distress and the adherence to the Korean healthy eating index (KHEI): the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2013 and 2015

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association of depressive symptoms, stress perception, and suicidal ideation with overall dietary quality using the newly developed Korean healthy eating index (KHEI). SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 9,607 adults (3,939 men and 5,668 women, ≥ 19 years) who participated in the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 and 2015. The KHEI scores were calculated using the food frequency questionnaire data. Survey logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the association between psychiatric distress and dietary quality. RESULTS: The percentage of subjects with experience of depressive mood, higher stress perception, and suicidal ideation was 8.2%, 25.0%, and 3.7% in men and 15.4%, 27.3%, and 6.0% in women, respectively. The mean KHEI score was 61.5 ± 0.29 in men and 64.8 ± 0.24 in women (P < 0.001). The present study found a difference in the adherence to specific dietary components of the KHEI between sexes. Men experiencing depressive symptoms were less likely to eat meat, fish, eggs, and beans, while depressed women showed lower vegetable intake. Both men and women with suicidal ideation showed a lower intake of vegetables. The men with stress had a lower breakfast eating score than those without stress (7.21 vs. 6.77, P = 0.016). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for depressive symptoms, stress perception, and the suicidal idea in women with the highest quartile of KHEI scores compared to the lowest quartile was 0.69 (95% confidence interval, 0.51-0.92), 0.73 (0.58-0.82), and 0.52 (0.33-0.82), respectively and significant dose-response associations were observed (P for trends < 0.05 for all). On the other hand, these associations were not observed in men after adjusting for the confounding variables (P for trends > 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Poor adherence to dietary recommendations is associated with psychological distress, especially in women.

  • To evaluate the thermal and water stress of vegetation canopy in Southern Qu$\'{e}$bec, leaf water status was evaluated from vegetation indices derived from SPOT VEGETATION images and surface temperature from NOAA AVHRR images. This study was conducted by investigating vegetation conditions for two different periods, from June to August, 1999 and 2000. The vegetation indices were integrated for the evaluating vegetation conditions as a new index, normalized moisture index (NMI). A trapezoid was defined by the NMI and surface temperature, and the thermal and water status of the vegetation canopy was determined according to separate small sections within the trapezoid.

Rheological Properties of Cowpea and Mung Bean starch Gels and Pastes (동부와 녹두전분 Gel 및 Paste의 Rheological Properties)

  • Rheological properties of cowpea and mung bean starch gels and pastes were investigated and compared with Instron Universal Testing machine and Brabender Viscometer. As the result of puncture test of gels, yield point force of mung bean starch gel was higher than that of cowpea starch gel. Compression coefficient of cowpea starch gel calculated by Bourne's equation was lower than that of mung bean starch gel. the stress relaxation test showed that viscoelastic properties of cowpea and mung bean starch gels may be represented by six element Maxwell model consisting of three Maxwell element in parallel. Cowpea and mung bean starch pastes showed bingham pseudoplastic behavior in 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8%. The consistency index in 7∼8% of cowpea starch paste were lower than those of mung bean starch paste. concentration dependence on consistency index and yield stress in mung bean starch were higher than those of cowpea starch. The yield stress of starch pastes was significantly correlated with yield point force by puncture test (r=0.996).

Flow Properties of Traditional Kochujang : Effect of Fermentation Time (숙성기간에 따른 재래 고추장의 유동성 변화)

  • Flow properties of traditional kochujang at various fermentation times(0~12 weeks) were determined with rotational cylindrical(RC) and serrated plate plate(PP) viscometer. Magnitudes of consistency index(K) of power law model and Cassson parameters(yield stress and viscosity) measured by PP viscometer were higher than those using RC viscometer. All kochujang samples during fermentation were much shear thinning with values of flow behavior index(n) as low as 0.2~0.34. K value and Casson yield stress measured by PP viscometer had good correlations(r=0.94; r=0.91) with fermentation time. No significant changes in flow model parameters measured by RC viscometer were observed for kochu jang during fermentation. Magnitudes of flow model parameters measured by PP viscometer more closely correlated with fermantation times of kochujang than did RC viscometer.

Effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the hydration heat properties of cement composites

  • In recent years, nano-reinforcing materials are widely utilized in cement composites due to their unique multifunctional properties. This study incorporated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the cementitious composites at ratios of 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%, and investigated their influence on the flowability, mechanical strength, and hydration heat properties. The addition of MWCNTs enhanced the compressive and split tensile strengths approximately by 18-51%. In the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, the internal hydration heat of the composites reduced by 5%, 9%, and 12% with the increase of MWCNTs in 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%. This study further performed hydration heat analysis and estimated the adiabatic temperature rise, thermal stress, and thermal crack index. The internal hydration heat of the concrete decreased by 5%, 10%, and 13% with the increase of MWCNTs. The thermal stress of the concrete decreased with increase in the addition of MWCNTs, and the obtained temperature crack index was effective in controlling the thermal cracks.

  • In this study, previously developed algorithm is used for Optimization of hybrid composite plates using Tsai-Wu criteria. For the stress-based Design Optimization problems, Von-Mises stress uses as design variable for isotropic materials. Maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai Hill, and Tsai-Wu criteria are generally used to determine failure of composite materials. In this study, failure index value is used as design variable in the optimization algorithm and Tsai-Wu criteria is utilized to calculate this value. In the analyses, commonly used design domains according to different hybrid orientations are optimized and results are presented. When the optimization algorithm was applied, 50% material reduction was obtained without exceeding allowable failure index value.

Stress fracture in Vascularized fibular Grafts (혈관 부착 이식 비골에 발생한 피로골절)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate stress fracture of vascularized fibular grafts(VFG) by analyzing factors associated with stress fracture and the treatment results. Materials and Methods : From June 1985 to May 1998, 7 patients with stress fractures in the 38 patients with long bone defect who had vascularized fibular graft were evaluated with clinical and radiologic methods including grafted fibular length and hypertrophic index of de Boer. The average age of the patients was 35 years(range, $14{\sim}60$ years). The mean follow-up period was 20 months(range, $16{\sim}32$ months). Results: 7(18.4%) stress fractures occurred in 38 patients. Characteristics of the fractures were (1) all occurred at lower extremity of male patients treated with VFG for long bone defected caused by infected nonunion; (2) all occurred 10 months at the average(range, $4{\sim}17$ months) after VFG; and (3) the length and hypertrophic index of grafted fibula had no influence on the incidence of stress fracture. Union was obtained in 3 patients by conservative treatment. 4 patients obtained union by internal fixation; one at immediately onset of fracture; and three after failure of conservative treatment who had fracture around the knee joint. Conclusion : Stress fracture may occur during the first one year after vascularized fibular graft and more attention must be paid for prevention of it, especially in the cases of infected nonunion. Stress fracture around the knee joint was expected to lead to a good result of early union by operative treatment.

Effects of Stress and Obesity on the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome to the Sasang Constitution (체질에 따른 스트레스와 비만도가 대사증후군 유병률에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives This study is to identify the relationship between stress, obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) by Sasang constitution (SC) and to use it as a basic data for the customized healthcare system of chronic disease management. Methods In a cross-sectional study conducted in a rural area of the Gyeongju area in 2014, we extracted data on 1,847 people using data from Korean medicine Data Center (KDC). The SC types diagnosed by Sasang constitutional medicine doctor. The stress was measured by the psychosocial well-being index questionnaire, and the obesity was defined by the body mass index. Results In all SC type, the stress and obesity was associated with MetS. There was a significant difference in the prevalence and trend of MetS according to presence of stress and obesity. The prevalence of MetS was the highest in Taeumin with all the stress and obesity, in order of Soeumin and Soyangin. Regardless SC types, the stress was associated with higher risk of MetS in the obese but not in the nonobese. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that further research is necessary to the SC types for the management of the Metabolic syndrome according to stress and obesity.
