  • This paper illustrates the application of Fuzzy Theory and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) for developing Occupational Stress Index(OSI). The purpose of the OSI development is for future prediction and problem solving of prevailing occupational stress. In developing OSI, the concept of fuzzy set theory was introduced to determine the existence and level of perceived occupational stress instead of actually measuring the strain parameters. The AHP is adopted to collect different weighting factors, since there exist various perceptions and responses to the occupational stress by different individuals. The validation study revealed that the OSI is a reliable predictor of work-related accident and illness and the physiological health of employees. Creating preventive measures, such as early detection of stress, proper placement and promotion of employees, and job enlargement will be possible by using this OSI effectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain stress shift and its following segmental variations when some suffixes are added to the bases. In the past those were analyzed in stress or vowel laxing phenomenon separately, but rather those should be analyzed in one framework compositively. Therefore in this paper I will introduce a new theory, which is known as Harmonic theory, and confirm that it can solve the problems related with stress and vowel laxing simultaneously. The first thing, as a prosodic approach I am going to analyze vowel laxing according to Liberman & Prince (1977), Burzio (1993), and then next to go to the Harmonic theory approach. Within the theory I will analyze the phonological phenomena harmoniously through the important three levels, M-level, W-level, P-level. Therefore this paper is to show that from the comparison between the prosodic analysis and the Harmonic analysis, what is more natural and harmonious analysis is based on the Harmonic approach.

  • The viscoplasticity theory based on overstress, one of the unified state variable theories, is generalized to model zero (no influence of loading rate) and negative (flow stress decreases with loading rate) as well as positive (flow stress increases with loading rate) rate sensitivity in a consistent way. On the basis of the long-time asymptotic solution the different types of rate sensitivity are classified with respect to an augmentation function that is introduced in the evolution law fur a state variable equilibrium stress. The theory predicts normal relaxation and creep behaviors even if unusual rate sensitivity is modeled. The constitutive model fir the behavior of a modified 9Cr-1 Mo steel at various temperatures is then compared with experimental data found in the literature.

  • The present paper is concerned at investigating the effect of hydrostatic initial stress, gravity and magnetic field in fiber-reinforced thermoelastic solid, with variable thermal conductivity. The formulation of the problem applied in the context of the three-phase-lag model, Green-Naghdi theory with energy dissipation, as well as coupled theory. The exact expressions of the considered variables by using state-space approaches are obtained. Comparisons are performed in the absence and presence of the magnetic field as well as gravity. Also, a comparison was made in the three theories in the absence and presence of variable thermal conductivity as well as hydrostatic initial stress. The study finds applications in composite engineering, geology, seismology, control system and acoustics, exploration of valuable materials beneath the earth's surface.

  • Atherosclerosis, which is a degenerative vascular disease, is believed to occur in the blood vessels due to deposition of cholesterol or low density lipoprotein (LDL). Atherosclerotic lumen narrowing causes reduction of blood flow due to hemodynamic features. Several hypothetical theories related to the hemodynamic effects have been reported : high shear stress theory, low shear stress theory, high shear stress gradient theory, flow separation and turbulence theory, and high pressure theory. However, no one theory clearly explains, the causes of atherosclerosis. The objective of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of the generation of atherosclerosis. In the study, the database of Korean carotid and coronary arteries for geometrical and hemodynamic clinical data was established. The atherosclerotic sites were predicted by the computer simulations. The results of the computer simulation were compared with the in vivo experimental results, and then the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by using the clinical data and several hypothetical theories were investigated. From the investigation, it was concluded carefully that the mechanism of the generation of atherosclerosis was related to the hemodynamic effects such as flow separation and oscillatory wall shear stress on the vessel walls.

  • This work investigates a novel plate formulation and a modified couple stress theory that introduces a variable length scale parameter is presented to discuss the static and dynamic of functionally graded (FG) micro-plates. A new type of third-order shear deformation theory of Reddy that use only 4 unknowns by including undetermined integral variables is proposed in this study. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions are obtained for a simply supported micro-plate. Numerical examples are presented to examine the effect of the length scale parameter on the responses of micro-plates. The obtained results are compared with the previously published results to demonstrate the correctness of the present formulation.

  • Stress relaxation tests have been performed under five different tensile strain levels and five different bending strain levels. Three different theoretical models have been developed based on four-element Burger's model, viscoelastic theory and viscous-viscoelastic theory. Experimental data were used to obtain parameters of the models and to verify accuracy of the models. Among the three theoretical models developed in this study, three-integral model (Model 3) based on viscous-viscoelastic theory showed the most exact estimations of stress relaxation under both tensile and bending strains and their correlation coefficients were greater than 0.99 for all the strain levels. Model 1 showed little initial stress relaxation. Model 2 showed excessive initial relaxation and, then, no relaxation after about 20 minute of strain application. Stress retention under strain decreased as strain increased, which means increased stress relaxation as strain increases. When the strain level was less than proportional limit, the effect of strain level on stress relaxation was not clearly shown. However, this effect was increased as strain level increased when strain level was greater than proportional limit.

  • The objective of this paper is to study the deformation in a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic solid using modified couple stress theory subjected to ramp-type thermal source with two temperature. The advantage of this theory is the involvement of only one material length scale parameter which can determine the size effects. Laplace and Fourier transform technique is applied to obtain the solutions of the governing equations. The components of displacement, conductive temperature, stress components and couple stress are obtained in the transformed domain. A numerical inversion technique has been used to obtain the solutions in the physical domain. The effect of two temperature is depicted graphically on the resulted quantities. Numerical results show that the proposed model can capture the size effects of microstructures.

  • The present paper attempts to investigate the propagation of plane waves in an isotropic elastic medium under the effect of initial stress and temperature-dependent properties. The modulus of elasticity is taken as a linear function of the reference temperature. The formulation is applied under the thermoelasticity theory with dual-phase-lag; the normal mode analysis is used to obtain the expressions for the displacement components, the temperature, the stress, and the strain components. Numerical results for the field quantities are given in the physical domain and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by different theories (Lord-Shulman theory, the classical coupled theory of thermoelasticity and the dual-phase-lag model) in the absence and presence of the initial stress as well as the case where the modulus of elasticity is independent of temperature.

  • In this paper, we investigate contact characteristic of wheel-rail interface for rolling stock using the finite element method. Contact stress distribution due to the rail mounting slope is obtained in order to reduce the contact stress. Stress analysis of the rail, firstly, is performed one subjected to elliptical pressure based on Hertz theory. Secondly, we perform stress analysis of the rail subjected to contact stress obtained by this study. Results for the maximum shear stress, its location and the principal shear stress distribution are compared.
