In case of spot-welded joints, the fatigue cracks generally originate from the weld interfaces of the neighborhood nugget tips, and propagate toward the outer surfaces of the sheets. Generally, because fatigue crack was observed in nugget around, strain gage was attached at nugget zone. Accordingly, it was very difficult to detect the generation time of fatigue crack in spot-welded joints and to measure the propagation speed of fatigue crack. We developed the non-destructive method, according to which th fatigue crack propagation rate can be quantitatively estimated by utilizing information obtained from strain gages bonded on the electrode indentations of spot welds. The results measured by real crack were compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method in fatigue testing. And so fatigue strength was evaluated by stress intensity factor. In this study behavior of fatigue crack propagation under repeated load were considered.
The residual stress in axial stress in the axial direction of the steel filaments has been measured by using a method based on the combination of the focused ion beam (FIB) and high resolution strain mapping program (VIC-2D). That is, the residual stress was calculated from the measured displacement field before and after the introduction of a slot along the steel filaments. The displacement was obtained by the digital correlation analysis of high-resolution scanning electron micrographs, while the slot was introduced by FIB milling with low energy beam. The present measurement revealed that the residual stress within 8% of the magnitude was persistent in the steel filaments fabricated.
An attempt has been made to measure existing steel stress using magnetoelasticity. A device has been developed and used for the measurement of magnetism in response to the deformation of a steel bar. The proposed technique can be used for the assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures by the measurements of steel stress embedded inside concrete. A traditional technique requires to break the existing steel bar to measure existing strain. However, the proposed technique is developed to measure the stress without damaging the steel bar. A successful application of magnetoelasticity depends on the establishment of relationship between elastic and magnetic response due to loading. To investigate the correlation between the two, steel bars are loaded in tension under uniaxial loading while the magnetic reading is recorded. Based on the test results, equations are suggested to predict stress for steel bars with different diameters.
In this study, the stress-strain response and the cracking behaviors of ITO film on a PET substrate are investigated. The cracking behaviors of ITO thin films deposited on a thermoplastic semi-crystalline polymer developed for flexible display applications was investigated by means of tensile experiments equipped with an electrical measurement apparatus and an in-situ optical microscope. Electrical resistance increased gradually in the elastic-to-plastic transition region of the stress strain curves and cracks formed. Numerous cracks were found in this region, and the increase of the resistance was linked to the cracking of ITO thin films. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed at about 1% of the total strain. They propagated to the entire sample width as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the thickness of the ITO film as well as by the interfacial strength between the ITO and PET. The effect of the strain rate on the cracking behavior was also investigated. The crack density increased as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks (perpendicular to the stress axis) increased as the strain rate decreased. The increase of the crack density as the strain rate decreased can be attributed to the higher fraction of the plastic strain to the total strain at a given total strain. The higher critical strain for the onset of the increase in the resistance and the crack initiation of the ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (300 ohms/sq.) suggests a higher strength of the thinner ITO film.
The interest in the mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates has increased in recent years, and by now it is well known that mechanical properties can be strongly influenced by the speed of applied load. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, measurement error source must be accounted for and eliminated. During experiment, the specimens were located between the incident and the transmit bar. The presence of contact frictions between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this work, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on test results. In SHPB test, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is assumed to be flow stress of the test specimen. Through the numerical experiments, however, it is shown that the measured stress by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When, the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and the axial stress of the specimen are about the same. When the contact surface is not frictionless, however, the flow stress and the axial stress are not the same anymore. Therefore, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is not flow stress. The effect of friction on the difference between flow stress and axial stress is investigated.
Monolithic AlN and AlN-W composites were fabricated by pressure-less sintering at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere and the influences of tungsten phase on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investi-gated. In the fabrication of sintered specimen no additive was used. And monolithic AlN showed substantial grain growth and low relative density. AlN-W composites were fully densified and grain growths of matrix were inhibited. The densification behavior of composites were inferred to be achieved through the liquid phase sintering process such as particle-rearrangement and solutino-reprecipitation. Also the oxid phases which is expected to form liquid phases duringsintering process were detected by XRD analysis. As the tungsten volume content increases fracture strength was decreased and fracture toughness was increased. It was suppo-sed that the strength decrease of composites with tungsten content was due to existence of interface phases. The subcritical crack growth behavior was observed from the stress-strain curve of composites. The effect of the secondary phase and interface phases on toughness in crease were studied through observation of crack propagation path and the influence of residual stress on crack propagation was investigated by X-ray residual stress measurement. In the result of residual stress measurement the compressive stress of matrix in composi-test was increased with tungsten volume content and the compressive stress distribution of matrix must have contributed to the inhibition of crack propagation.
Recently, the mechanical structures applied to many industrial products, especially in electronic products, appear to be miniaturized and complicated. This trend makes it difficult to analyze the stress distribution of those mechanical structures and generates new challenges for precise measurement of strain. In order to solve this measurement problem many optical measurement techniques have been suggested. Among those, the ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) has been considered as one of the most useful tools. But the shortage of recognition and difficulties of measurement have limited its industrial applications in spite of its excellent capabilities. Therefore in this study, not only the verification of the FEA result but the enhancement of industrial application of ESPI was tried by measuring the in-plane displacement of mechanical structure with ESPI, which is difficult to be measured with strain gauge.
The measurement of residual stresses by the hole-drilling method has been commonly used to evaluate residual stresses in structural members. In this method, one of the source of error is due to the misalignment between the drilling hole and strain gage center. This paper presents a finite element analysis of the influence of such misalignment for the uniaxial residual stress field. The stress error increases proportionally to hole eccentricity. The correction equations which easily obtain the residual stress taking account of the hole eccentricity are derived. The stress error due to the hole eccentricity decreases by approximately one percent using this equations.
