  • Shear strength parameters obtained from filed survey are important factors in the analysis of slope stability. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of input parameters on the analysis of slope stability. The input parameters selected for sensitivity analysis were slope angle, cohesion, and friction angle. Monte-Carlo Simulation method was used for calculating input parameters and the factor of safety was computed by means of limit equilibrium method. A rock slope, which has failed in the field, was used for the sensitivity analysis in the analysis of slope stability. The result of analysis shows that the factor of safety of the rock slope was a little low. From partial correlation coefficient(PPC) of input parameters determined from the sensitivity analysis, slope stability was dependant on cohesion and slope angle. The effect of friction angle was lower than that of cohesion and slope angle on slope stability.

  • Aggregates mineralogical, and petrographic properties directly affect the mechanical properties of the produced high strength. This study is focused on the effects of magmatic, sedimentary, and metamorphic aggregates on the performance of high strength concrete. In this study, the effect of the mineralogical properties of aggregates on the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete was estimated by Artifical Neural Network (ANN). To estimate the compressive strength and elasticity modules, 96 test specimens were produced. After 28 days under suitable conditions, tests were carried out to determine the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the test specimens. This study also focused on the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the 28-day compressive strength and the modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete. An ANN model is developed, trained, and tested by using the available test data obtained from the experimental studies. The ANN model is found to predict the modulus of elasticity, and 28 days compressive strength of high strength concrete well, within the ranges of the input parameters. These comparisons show that ANNs have a strong potential to predict the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete over the range of input parameters considered.

  • In this paper, the limit load of granular materials was evaluated considering unsaturated shear strength. The unsaturated shear strength parameters were estimated using the results from triaxial compression test and soil-water characteristic curves test. In addition, the limit load of different rates of materials was compared. Also, two important design parameters, yield and failure load were defined utilizing 2-D nonlinear finite element analysis respectively.

  • The ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism of square footings resting on a sand layer over clay soil have been investigated numerically by performing a series of three-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses. The parameters investigated are the thickness of upper sand layer, strength of sand, undrained shear strength of lower clay and surcharge effect. The results obtained from finite element analyses were compared with those from previous design methods based on limit equilibrium approach. The results proved that the parameters investigated had considerable effect on the ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism occurring. It was also shown that the thickness of upper sand layer, the undrained shear strength of lower clay and the strength of sand are the most important parameters affecting the type of failure will occur. The value of the ultimate bearing capacity could be significantly different depending on the limit equilibrium method used.

  • In this paper, an experimental investigation was carried out to study the effect of volume fraction of fiber and maximum aggregate size on mode-I fracture parameters of high strength concrete. Total of 108 beams were tested on loading frame with three point loading, the variables in the high strength concrete beams are aggregate size (20 mm, 16 mm and 10 mm) and volume fraction of fibers (0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%). The fracture parameters like fracture energy, brittleness number and fracture process zone were analyzed by the size effect method (SEM). It was found that fracture energy (Gf) increases with increasing the Maximum aggregate size and also increasing the volume of fibers, brittleness number (${\beta}$) decreases and fracture process zone (CF) increases.

  • In this study, TiN film was deposited onto steel by R.F.-PACVD in order to investigate the influence of parameters on the adhesion strength between film and substrate. Experimental results showed that adhesion strength by SAT is different from by optical microscopy. Adhesion strength is increased when the deposition temperature increases and is influenced by R.F. power and electrode distance. Especially heat treatment on the substrate has influenced over the adhesion strength, so it showed the 22 Newtons in adhesion strength by SAT and adhesion strength is decreased when deposition thickeness is thick and hardness is high. Also if the film is thick and high hardness simultaneous, the film was delaminated seriously.

  • Reinforced Concrete structures have been commonly regarded as fire-resisting constructions. In the case of high-strength concrete, however, the behavior of a concrete member under fire and after fire has characteristics in different way with normal strength concrete members because of spalling. The resonable evaluation about the residual strength and stiffness of members as well as material properties has to be conducted before reusing the fire-damaged structures or retrofitting or strengthening them. Therefore, the guideline is needed for evaluation the residual strength and stiffness. In this study, the fire test is conducted with parameters like concrete strength, fire time and cover thickness, etc. The loads-deflection curves are used for comparison and analysis with the parameters.

  • This work attempts to implement multiple regression analysis (MRA) for modeling and predicting the shear buckling strength of a steel beam with corrugated web. It was recognized from theoretical and experimental results that the shear buckling strength of a steel beam with corrugated web is complicated and affected by several parameters. A model that predicts the shear strength of a steel beam with corrugated web with reasonable accuracy was sought. To that end, a total of 93 experimental data points were collected from different sources. Then mathematical models for the key response parameter (shear buckling strength of a steel beam with corrugated web) were established via MRA in terms of different input geometric, loading and materials parameters. Results indicate that, with a minimal processing of data, MRA could accurately predict the shear buckling strength of a steel beam with corrugated web within a 95% confidence interval, having an $R^2$ value of 0.93 and passing the F- and t-tests.

  • This paper introduces a new approach for evaluating reliability of a complex system in terms of distributional parameters where analytical determination of reliability is intractable. The concept of discrete approximation, reported in the literature so far, fails to meet the latter requirement in terms of distributional parameters. The current work aims at offering a bound based approach where reliability planners not only get a clear idea about the extent of error but also can manipulate in terms of distributional parameters. This reliability approximation has been under taken under the Weibull frame work which is the most widely used model for reliability analysis. Numerical study has been carried out to examine the strength of our proposed reliability approximation via closeness between the two reliability bounds. This approach will be very useful during the early stages of product design as the distributional parameters can be adjusted.

  • This paper presents an application of the maturation effect on the strength of high-strength concrete which is produced with different origin aggregates. While investigating the maturation effect on HSC 384 specimens were prepared with 22 different origin aggregates. These prepared specimens were subjected to the standard compressive tests which were applied after curing for 2, 7, 28, and 56 days under appropriate conditions. The test results revealed that bright surface-low adherence behavior is valid in normal strength concretes, but is not as effective as expected in high-strength concretes. The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict 2, 7, 28, and 56 day compressive strength of HSC is also investigated in this paper. An ANN model is built, trained, and tested using the available test data gathered from experimental studies. The ANN model is found to predict 2, 7, 28, and 56 days of compressive strength of high-strength concrete well within the ranges of the input parameters considered. These comparisons show that ANNs have strong potential as a feasible tool for predicting the compressive strength of high-strength concrete within the range of the input parameters considered.
