  • A evaluation for the strength of rock includes a lot of uncertainty due to existence of discontinuity surface and weakness plain in the rock mass, so essential test results and other data for the resonable strength analysis are absolutely insufficient. Therefore, a analytical technique to reduce such uncertainty can be required. A probabilistic analysis technique has mainly to make up for the uncertainty to investigate the strength of rock mass. Recently, a artificial neural networks, as a more newly analysis method to solve several problems in the existing analysis methodology, trends to apply to study on the rock strength. In this study the unconfined compressive strength from basic physical property values of sedimentary rock, black shale and red shale, distributed in Daegu metropolitan area is estimated, using the artificial neural networks. And the applicability of the analysis method is investigated. From the results, it is confirmed that the unconfined compressive strength of the sedimentary rock can be easily and efficiently predicted by the analysis technique with the artificial neural networks.

  • Despite the increasing necessity of accurate estimation of ring-stiffened cylinders' ultimate strength, the complex structural behavior of cylinders has made their design mainly depend on empirical formulas mostly based on insufficient test data rather than theoretical background. This paper has developed the imperfection method which enables the ultimate strength analysis of buckling sensitive structures by combining two general functions of common commercial finite element softwares, linear elastic buckling analysis and nonlinear stress analysis. Developed method was applied to two of the world most renowned commercial softwares, MSC/NASTRAN and ABAQUS, for the analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders and unexpectedly big difference in their analysis results was found. This tells that many widely used commercial softwares has their different strong points and week points and the choice of commercial software should be cautiously made after thorough inspection. This paper ends with some useful information about which of the aforementioned two softwares is more appropriate respectively for linear elastic buckling analysis and ultimate strength analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders.

  • Despite the frequent use of ring-stiffened cylinders as a submarine pressure hull or members of various types of offshore structure, their ultimate strength analysis methods have not been well established because of their complex structural characteristics. This paper has established the method how to use commercial softwares based on the finite element method to implement the ultimate strength analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders covering both types of initial imperfection, i.e. initial deformation and initial stress by combining two separately offered functions of common commercial finite element softwares, linear elastic buckling analysis and nonlinear stress analysis. Developed method was applied to one of the world-widely used commercial softwares. ABAQUS for the analysis of ring stiffened cylinders. This paper ends with some useful information about the imperfection sensitivity of ultimate strength ring stiffened cylinders.

  • The moment-curvature envelope describes the changes in the flexural capacity with deformation during a nonlinear analysis. Therefore, the moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. The moments and curvatures associated with increasing flexural deformations of the column may be computed for various column axial loads by incrementing the curvature and satisfying the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of forces. Clearly it is important to have accurate information concerning the complete stress-strain curve of confined high-strength concrete in order to conduct reliable moment-curvature analysis to assess the ductility available from high-strength columns. However, it is not easy to explicitly characterize the mechanical behavior of confined high-strength concrete because of various parameter values, such as the confinement type of rectilinear ties, the compressive strength of concrete, the volumetric ratio and strength of rectangular ties, etc. So a stress-strain confinement model is developed which can simulate a complete inelastic moment-curvature relations of a high-strength reinforced concrete column

  • In this study, a strength analysis was performed to assess die-cast aluminum alloy brake pedals as an improved alternative to wrought alloys. Aluminum brake pedal shapes are considered to be suitable for the die-casting process. The strength criterion of Volvo trucks was used as the criterion for the pedal strength. The results of this analysis showed that the frame thickness of the aluminum brake pedal must be increased from 12 mm to 18 mm to have a strength superior to that of a steel brake pedal. Additionally, the stress and weight of the aluminum brake pedal were found to be approximately 24% and 26% lower than those of the steel brake pedal, respectively. Mounting tests and strength assessments verified that the proposed die-cast aluminum alloy brake pedal demonstrated sufficient strength.

  • Fatigue strength analysis is one of the most important themes of ship structure design, as fatigue damages are reported on ship structures even now. But these need basic research workes which will take time. The others are the problem to apply fatigue strength analysis in design and have to be investigated in parallel with basic researches. The one of major items in the latter is the critical damage factor to define with S-N curve for fatigue strength analysis of ship structure design.

  • In this study, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) analysis is used to predict the compression strength of polypropylene fibre mixed concrete. Polypropylene fibre admixture increases the compression strength of concrete to a certain extent according to mix proportion. This proportion and homogenous distribution are important parameters on compression strength. Determination of compression strength of fibre mixed concrete is significant due to the veridicality of capacity calculations. Plenty of experiments shall be completed to state the compression strength of concrete which have different fibre admixture. In each case, it is known that performing the laboratory experiments is costly and time-consuming. Therefore, ANN analysis is used to predict the 7 and 28 days of compression strength values. For this purpose, 156 test specimens are produced that have 26 different types of fibre admixture. While the results of 120 specimens are used for training process, 36 of them are separated for test process in ANN analysis to determine the validity of experimental results. Finally, it is seen that ANN analysis predicts the compression strength of concrete successfully.

  • Laboratory and meta-analyses were done for 9% NI Steel for use in a liquefied natural gas carrier. The meta-analysis is based on a previous study. The laboratory analysis examines the effects of a single pass and multiple passes on the tensile strength through an impulse-response test. The tensile strength increased from pass one to pass three and decreased from pass four to pass ten. The pass and multi-pass welding had a positive effect on the tensile strength. Lastly, the welding and tensile time had a positive effect on the tensile strength.
