Metals, ceramics and polymers are widely used as bioimplant materials. However, Ti and Ti alloys are widely used because of its high strength to weight ratio and good biocompatibility when implanted in the body. In this experiment, Ti alloys of Grade-4 (gr4), 0.2 wt % Fe, 0.5 wt % Fe and 2 wt % Fe were studied for their surface morphology and HAp forming ability on the metal substrate for different treatments. Intially, the samples were mechanically polished on silicone carbide paper (No.-2000). The polished samples were treated with 5M NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The NaOH treated samples were washed gently with distill water and dried at $40^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. The dried samples were heated in air at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The surface morphology of these samples were studied using SEM. The SEM studies showed network of pores in all samples. These samples were immersed in stimulated body fluids (SBF) kept at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for different periods over the length of 1 to 14 days. The apatite formation was confirmed on all Ti-alloys using EDAX.
For enhancing productivity of glulam, high frequency (HF) curing technique was researched in this study. Heat energy is generated by electromagnetic energy dissipation when HF wave is applied to a dielectric material. Because both lamina and adhesives have dielectric property, internal heat generation would be occurred when HF wave is applied to glulam. Most room temperature setting adhesives such as phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) resin, which is popularly used for manufacturing glulam, can be cured more quickly as temperature of adhesives increases. In this study, dielectric properties of larch wood and PRF adhesives were experimentally evaluated, and the mechanism of HF heating, which induced the fast curing of glue layer in glulam, was theoretically analyzed. Result of our experiments showed relative loss factor of PRF resin, which leads temperature increase, was higher than that of larch wood. Also, it showed density and specific heat of PRF, which are resistance factors of temperature increase, were higher than those of wood. It was expected that the heat generation in PRF resin by HF heating would occur greater than in larch wood, because the ratio of relative loss factor to density and specific heat of PRF resin was greater than that of larch wood. Through theoretical approach with the experimental results, the relative strengths of ISM band HF electric fields to achieve a target heating rate were estimated.

This study was carried out to develop new application field and obtain the basic data of mixed paper with wood pulp and chitosan fiber for producing functional paper. Two types of wood pulp, such as SwBKP and HwBKP, were mixed with chitosan fiber. Physical and optical properties, water vapor absorption, air permeability, antibacterial activity and ash were measured. And the surface morphology of manufactured paper was observed using SEM. The results are as follows. It was revealed that density, breaking length, burst index, tear index, folding endurance and brightness were reduced but water vapor absorption and air permeability were on the rise in the structural view of SwBKP according to increasing the chitosan fiber ratio. Those HwBKP added chitosan fiber were great not only in the strength but also water vapor absorption and air permeability except for brightness. The water vapor absorption was lower and the air permeability was higher in the HwBKP added various chitosan fiber ratios than those with no chitosan fiber. It is estimated that these properties were related with various mixed rate of chitosan fiber. Particularly, air permeability was strongly dependent on the mixed rate of chitosan fiber. The chitosan fiber has superior antibacterial property, comparing with wood fiber. Adding chitosan fiber to the wood pulp was found to have an excellent antibacterial activity, more than 90%. The ashes were determined within 0.5%. Special bonds between chitosan fiber and wood pulp was observed by SEM and it means that the chitosan fiber were combined equally in the interior of wood pulp. In conclusion, mixing wood pulp with chitosan fiber can not only improves the quality of paper but also extend the usage of paper as a functional paper by using inherent property of chitosan. After all, production of functional paper added chitosan fiber is expected for new valuable industry of paper.

The cultivation of agricultural crops results in the generation of agricultural byproducts. Researchers have reported that these materials can be useful in a variety of applications. However, over 50% of them are currently discarded because of the lack of specific technologies in industrial applications. Therefore, effective and specific applications must be developed in order to manufacture high-quality materials using discarded lignocellulosic resources. In this study, we determined the possibility of using kraft pulp from major agricultural byproducts as a raw material for the manufacture of paperboard. Rice husks, peanut husks, and garlic stems were obtained and used to prepare many kinds of kraft pulps by controlling the active alkali, sulfidity, reaction time, and liquor ratio. After the production of these kraft pulps, handsheets were manufactured by mixing them with KOCC. After preconditioning, the physical properties and strengths of the handsheets were measured according to the TAPPI test methods. The shapes, lengths, and widths of the pulp fibers varied according to the type of agricultural byproduct and the kraft pulping conditions. Rice husk and garlic stem pulps manufactured under mild pulping conditions resulted in handsheets of higher bulk than other pulps. Garlic stem pulps manufactured under mild pulping conditions were stronger than rice husk pulps and peanut husk pulps.
Al-containing titanium silicalite-1 ([Al]-TS-1) catalyst was prepared hydrothermally, and the effects of synthesis parameters such as silica/alumina sources, $SiO_2/TiO_2$ ratio, and aging treatment were investigated. The structure, crystal size, and shape were examined by XRD and SEM, and the extent of titanium incorporation into the zeolite framework was examined using UV-vis DRS spectroscopy. For [Al]-TS-1 catalyst preparation, aging of ca. 24h was essential, and the faster crystallization rates were achieved with Cab-O-Sil than with Ludox or TEOS as a silica source. In addition, the higher crystallinity and faster crystallization rate were obtained using sodium aluminate as an aluminum source. 2-butanol oxidation using $H_2O_2$ as an oxidant was carried out to confirm the redox property of the [Al]-TS-1. Acid sites catalyzed toluene alkylation study indicated that lattice titanium species in [Al]-TS-1 weakened the acid strength, and the para-ethyltoluene selectivity was enhanced as a results.
Effects of the addition of single or blends of konjac flour (KF), carrageenan (CN), and soy protein isolate (SPI) into the sausage formulation were determined based on the physico-chemical and textural characteristics of low-fat comminuted sausage (LFS, fat <3%). LFSs had a pH range of 6.10 to 6.16, 77-79% moisture, <3% fat, and 13-15% protein contents, whereas regular-fat sausages (RFSs) had a pH value of 6.11, 62.5% moisture, 19.4% fat, and 11.9% protein. LFSs containing fat replacers were reduced (P<0.05) cooking loss (CL, %). KF alone or mixed with other hydrocolloids slightly improved the water-holding capacity, whereas CN increased (P<0.05) the gel strength, resulting in higher hardness values. Replacement of 6% lean meat with 1.5% SPI alone increased (P<0.05) yellowness (Hunter b value) and expressible moisture (EM, %). TPA values of KF+CN+SPI were the most similar to those of RFSs. These results indicated that triple addition of KF, CN and SPI at the ratio of 1 : 1 : 3 in LFS formulation improved functional properties, as compared to the low-fat control, and had textural characteristics most similar to those with RFSs.

Recently, antiwashout underwater concrete has been increasingly used for marine foundations of long span bridges. However, to shorten the construction period of antiwashout underwater concrete used in marine foundations, high fluidity antiwashout underwater concrete should be manufactured largely improving fluidity than the previous one. Thus, the objective of this experimental research is to suggest optimum mix proportions of high fluidity antiwashout underwater concrete. For this purpose, concrete specimens containing ground granulated blast furnace slag were manufactured according to the dosage of antiwashout admixture for unit binder contents of 550 and 600kg/$m^3$, respectively. And then, their quality performances such as slump flow, setting time, underwater segregation resistance, and ratio of compressive strength were evaluated according to the related specification of Korea Concrete Institute. It was observed from the test results that the minimum dosage of antiwashout admixture was necessary to satisfy the related specification.

A magnetic fluid separation technology was confirmed to be very effective to remove the suspended solids (SS) from aquacultural recirculating water, In this study, the effects of operating variables on the characteristics of SS removal were investigated through the test runs using magnetite of 2 $\mu$m mean diameter as magnetic powder. Magnetic flocculation here formed by adsorbing fine magnetites on the surface of suspended solid was observed. The strength of magnet was of significance in determining the SS removal efficiency as well as the capacity of the equipment. In addition, the SS removal efficiency decreased with an increase in the superficial liquid velocity, but the effect became negligible when the mass ratio of magnetite to the suspended solids was higher than 1.0.

It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.
