Wake characteristics of the flow over a finite square prism at different incidence angles were experimentally investigated using an open-loop wind tunnel. A finite square prism with a width D = 15 mm and a height H = 7D was vertically mounted on a horizontal flat plate. The Reynolds number was varied from $6.5{\times}10^3$ to $28.5{\times}10^3$ and the incidence angle ${\alpha}$ was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$. The ratio of boundary layer thickness to the prism height was about ${\delta}/H=7%$. The time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity and the vortex shedding frequency were obtained through a single-component hotwire probe. Power spectrum of the streamwise velocity fluctuations revealed that the tip and base vortices shed at the same frequency as that ofspanwise vortices. Furthermore, the results showed that the critical incidence angle corresponding to the maximum Strouhal number and minimum wake width occurs at ${\alpha}_{cr}=15^{\circ}$ which is equal to that reported for an infinite prism. There is a reduction in the size of the wake region along the height of the prism when moving away from the ground plane towards the free end.

Jets issuing through small holes in a wall into a freestream has proven effective in the control of flow separation. This technique is known as the vortex generator jet (VGJs) method. If a precursor signal of separation is found, the separation control system using VGJs can be operated just before the onset of separation and the flow field with no separation is always attained. In this study, we measured the flow field and the wall static pressure in a two-dimensional diffuser to find a precursor signal of flow separation. The streamwise velocity measurements were carried out in the separated shear layer and spectral analysis was applied to the velocity fluctuations at some angles with respect to the diffuser. The pattern of peaks in the spectral analysis changes as the divergence angle increases over the angle of which the whole separation occurs. This change in the spectral pattern is related to the enhancement of the growth of shear layer vortices and appears just before the onset of separation. Therefore, the growth of shear layer vortices can be regarded as a precursor signal to flow separation.
Using a semi-circled blunt body model, the geometrical effects of injection hole on the turbine blade leading edge film cooling are investigated. The film cooling characteristics of two shaped holes (laterally- and streamwise-diffused holes) and three cylindrical holes with different lateral injection angles, 30°, 45°, 60°, respectively, are compared with those of cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle experimentally and numerically. Kidney vortices, which decrease the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, appear on downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. At downstream of the two shaped holes have better film cooling characteristics than the cylindrical one. Instead of kidney vortices, single vortex appears on downstream of injection holes with lateral injection angle. The adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is symmetrically distributed along the lateral direction downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. But, at downstream of the cylindrical holes with lateral injection angle, the distribution of adiabatic film cooling effectiveness in the lateral direction shows asymmetric nature and high adiabatic film cooling effectiveness regions are more widely distributed than those of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. As the blowing ratio increases, also, the effects of hole shapes and injection angles increase.
The sailfish is the fastest sea animal, reaching its maximum speed of 110km/h. On its skin, a number of V-shaped protrusions pointing downstream exist. Thus, in the present study, the possibility of reducing the skin friction using its shape is investigated in a turbulent boundary layer. We perform a parametric study by varying the height and width of the protrusion, the spanwise and streamwise spacings between adjacent ones, and their overall distribution pattern, respectively. Each protrusion induces a pair of streamwsie vortices, producing low and high shear stresses at its center and side locations, respectively. These vortices also interact with those induced from adjacent protrusions. As a result, the drag is either increased or unchanged for all the cases considered. In some cases, the skin friction itself is reduced but total drag including the form drag on the protrusions is larger than that of a smooth surface. Since the shape of present protrusions is similar to that used by Sirovich and Karlsson [Nature 388, 753 (1997)] where V-shaped protrusions pointing upstream were considered, we perform another set of experiments following their study. However, we do not obtain any drag reduction even with random distribution of those V-shaped protrusion.
Vortical structures in the near-wake region of a cubic obstacle are studied using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one of the plates. In the turbulent near-wake region of the flow, coherent structures such as hairpin vortices are found. Quasi-periodic behavior of the hairpin vortices is noticed; its dimensionless frequency at Re=1,000 is about 0.82 which is consistent with the result of Elavarasan of et al.'s experiment [Fluid Dyn. Research, 2000, 27] although their geometry is somewhat different from on. In the case of Re=3,500, the dimensionless frequency of the hairpin vortex is about 1.60. It is observed that the translating speed of the head of the hairpin vortex is lower than the streamwise mean velocity at that location. In the vicinity of the lower plate downstream of the cube, various length scales are identified thus less coherent. However, it is noticed that the vortical structures become gradually elongated downstream of the new reattachment.
The incompressible viscous flow past a sphere under forced oscillation is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number of 300. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the sphere oscillating vertically to the streamwise direction. There are two important variables to characterize the oscillating state of a sphere. One is an oscillating amplitude normalized by the sphere diameter is set as a fixed number of 0.2. Another is the frequency ratio which is defined by $f_e/f_o$, where fe and fo are the excited frequency and the natural frequency of vortex shedding for the stationary sphere. In this study, three different frequency ratios of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 are considered. The results show a periodic flow with hairpin vortices shedding from upper and lower positions as well as vortical legs obliquely extended by oscillating motion of sphere. The enveloping vortical structure experience rupture twice in one period of oscillation. As the frequency of oscillation is increased, the vortical legs are getting shorter and eventually the hairpin vortices are much closer to the adjacent one.
Flow characteristics of the wake behind a finite circular cylinder(FC) mounted on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. Three finite cylinder models having aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio, L/D) of 6,10 and 13 were tested in this study. Wake velocity was measured by a hot-wire anemometry at Reynolds number of 20,000, and the results were compared with those of two-dimensional circular cylinder. As a result, the free-end effect on the wake structure becomes more dominant with decreasing the aspect ratio(L/D) of the finite cylinder. Invisid flow entrained into the wake region decreases the turbulence intensity and periodicity of the vortex shedding due to existence of the free end. From spectral analysis and cross correlation of the velocity signals, vortices having 24Hz frequency characteristics are found in the down wash flow just behind the free end. There exists very complicated flow near the free end due to interaction between the entrained flow and streamwise vortices. Vortex formation region is destroyed significantly in the near wake and shows quite different wake structures from those of 2-D cylinder.
Sinusoidal wavy channel is one of the most commonly used devices in the industry for achieving mixing and heat transfer. Here we report on results obtained from the DNS of flow inside the wavy channel performed using the finite volume technique. As a primary stage to obtain the optimal design for heat transfer and mixing, this study observed the basic flow structures in a wavy channel. The mass flow rate is kept constant with friction Reynolds number of $Re_{\tau}$ = 140 . Time- and space-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are illustrated to observe the flow structures. Although the direct comparison of results between turbulent wavy and flat channel is somehow difficult due to the different flow phenomena derived from different configuration, here the mean streamwise velocity and RMS of velocities at same $Re_{\tau}$ of two different channels are compared. The basic difference between wavy and flat channel flow is the existence of small scale wall vortices along the walls in a wavy channel. These vortices make flow more complex, which will accompany the increase of heat transfer, pressure drop and drag.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.
The intermittent characteristics of fluid particle accelerations near the wall are investigated with the higher-order statistics and the probability density functions (PDF) by using a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. Also, the behaviors of acceleration associated with the coherent structures are discussed. The flatness factor of wall-normal acceleration is extremely high near the wall and it exceeds the previously reported value obtained in isotropic turbulence. The presence of the wall seems to make the accelerations more intermittent and the associated mechanism is explained with the PDFs. The skewness factor of wall-normal acceleration indicates that accelerations are associated with the streamwise vortices.
