  • A Stratospheric airship should stay long to achieve its original mission. Meanwhile, to obtain what the solar radiation and heat transfer have an effect on Stratospheric condition, heat analysis has been done. For this work, Stratospheric heat condition's been examined and for the numerical analysis, by using Gridgen, grids of airship have been generated. And by using STAR-CD, the study about heat characteristic of airship model was carried out. Especially, with changing the position of the Sun, the temperature change of the airship body was focused on. With this background, the possibility of realizing the simulation of the effects solar radiation have on the Stratospheric airship.

  • Reactions of NO$_{x}$, HO$_{x}$ and $O_3$ chemistry in a diffusion process of the exhaust plume under a stratospheric condition were investigated numerically. Expanding Box method was used to assess the effects of exhaust gases from a stratospheric flight system on $O_3$ depletions. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify prime reactions of $O_3$ depletions in an exhaust plume right after the nozzle. In addition, a calculation of reactive flows in stratospheric condition was performed to investigate the characteristics of reactions in a plume. As a result of this study, prime reactions of NO$_{x}$, HO$_{x}$ and $O_3$chemistry in an exhaust plume were identified, and fundamental behavior of chemical species were examined in a exhaust plume.t plume.

  • For a relatively small country like Korea, a radionavigation system using airships can be considered, which is to provide the navigation service utilizing the stratospheric airships that are deployed in the stratosphere at the altitude of around 20-23km, and which is an independent or a back-up radionavigation system other than current GPS or GLONASS. In this paper, a feasibility study on the constellation of stratospheric airships for the navigation system has been performed. A measure of a geometrical condition between a receiver and navigation transmitters. called the DOP (Dilution of Precision), determines the resulting positioning error of the navigation system, if the error of range measurement is predictable. Therefore, with assumption that the range measurement error of the stratospheric airship navigation system is quite similar to GPS. the several DOP values have been used to evaluate the performance of the navigation system with comparing with the DOP values of GPS as the reference values. To provide the position information of the navigation transmitters to users, a receiver cluster system fixed on the ground, called an IGPS (inverted GPS), is proposed, and the error is also evaluated using the DOP values. Five areas around five major cities in South Korea have been selected, and then by numerical simulations the DOP values are compared those of GPS to assess the performance of the proposed navigation system using stratospheric airships. The possible frequency bands have been proposed. and then link budget of the navigation transmitter has been analyzed for the proposed navigation system.

  • This study has been performed on the mechanism of heat transfer between stratospheric airship and its surroundings while the airship is staying in the air at the altitude of 20km. The computational grid of airship has been generated and the results influenced by the number and the shape of grids have been compared. The temperature distributions have been obtained through this thermal analysis considering three modes of heat transfer - conduction, convection and radiation - in stratospheric conditions. Based on the airship's surface and inner temperature variations, the influence of temperature distributions on the helium envelope and the payload has been predicted.

  • Contrast to the 6-DOF nonlinear dynamic modeling of nonlinear tracking problem, 3-DOF point-mass modeling of flight mechanics is efficient and adequate for applying the trajectory optimization problem. There exist limitations to apply an optimal trajectory from point-mass modeling as a reference trajectory directly to conduct the nonlinear tracking control, In this paper, new matching trajectory optimization scheme is proposed to compensate those differences of mismatching. To verify performance of proposed method, full ascent three-dimensional flight trajectories are obtained by reflecting the real constraints of flight conditions and airship performance with and without jet stream condition. Then, they are compared with the optimal trajectories obtained from conventional method.

  • This paper presents the results of the numerical simulation of a multibeam active phased array antenna for a High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS). The simulation takes into account the random errors caused by the non-identity of the array elements and the inaccuracy of the antenna calibration. The results of our statistical simulation show that the strict requirements on the sidelobe envelope for HAPSs can be met when the amplitude and phase distribution errors are minor, a condition which may be achieved by using digital beamforming.

  • Halogen-based fire suppressing agents have environmental problems because they cause the stratospheric ozone depletion and globe warming. Hence, fire suppression system using fine water mist became the center of interest as a substitution of halon. As a study about this, it is in progress to make the optimum droplet size by using water mist nozzles and to improve the extinguishing performance of water mist by using additives. Before this study, the extinguishing time of ethanol and n-heptane pool fire was measured with changing of water mist droplet size, flow density, discharge pressure, and fire size. In this study, on adding the additives to improve physical and chemical extinguishing performance of water mist, the extinguishing performance would evaluate and the optimum condition would find out. As a result, in case of ethanol pan 1 pool fire, the extinguishing time of the water mist by adding of 2.5 wt% NaCl and 0.3% AFFF got shorter 27% and 60% than the pure water mist. Adding of AFFF was to decrease the flame temperature by forming thin film on the fuel surface and to decrease the evaporation of n-heptane fuel. In case of NaCl, alkali salt crystals showed on the flame surface.
