A 30-m-thick Middle Ordovician Jigunsan Shale exposed along the southern limb of the Backunsan (Baekunsan) Syncline, Taebacksan (Taebaeksan) basin, has been simply considered as a transgressive shale sequence onlapped the underlying Maggol platform carbonates. Results of this study, however, suggest that majority of the Jigunsan Shale be interpreted as a regressive shale sequence downlapped onto a thin (ca. 240 cm) marine stratigraphic unit consisting of organic-rich (>3 wt.% of TOC) black shales in the lower Jigunsan Shale, which was accumulated at the time of maximum regional transgression. Detailed stratigraphic analysis in conjunction with XRD, XRF, and ICP-MS as well as Rock-Eval pyrolysis allows the thin marine stratigraphic unit in the Jigunsan Shale to define a condensed section that was deposited in a distinctive euxinic zone formed due to expansion of pycnocline during the early highstand phase. As well, a number of stratigraphic horizons of distinctive character that may have sequence stratigraphic or environmental significance, such as transgressive surface, maximum flooding surface, maximum sediment starvation surface, and downlap surface, are identified in the lower Jigunsan Shale. In the future, these stratigraphic horizons will provide very useful information to make a coherent regional stratigraphic correlation of the Middle Ordovician strata and to develop a comprehensive understanding on stratigraphic response to tectonic evolution as well as basin history of the Taebacksan Basin.
The goal of this study is to elucidate the fusulinid biostratigraphy of the Carboniferous limestones distributed in the Gangdong area of Samcheok coalfield, Korea. The Carboniferous strata of the study area mainly comprise alternaton of dark gray shale, dark gray and reddish sandstone, and gray limestone. The limestones consist mainly of wackestonepackstone containing various fossil fragments such as crinoid, coral, brachiopod, foraminifera, fusulinid, and bryozoa; this observation thus suggests that the study site was the shallow marine environments. A tital of 12 species belonging to 5 genera of fusulinids are identified from the limestones of the Gangdong geologic section: Ozawainella turgida Sheng, Ozawainella sp. A, Ozawainella magna Sheng, Pseudostaffella antiqua (Dutkevich), Pseudostaffella paracompressa Safonova, Pseudostaffella kimi Cheong, Pseudostaffella sp., Beedeina lanceolata (Lee and Chen), Beedeina samarica (Rauser-Chernoussova), Beedeina sp. A, Neostaffella sphaeroidea cuboides Rauser-Chernoussova, and Hanostaffella hanensis Cheong. Such fusulinids species were reported from the lower part of the Geumcheon Formation in Samcheok coalfield and the middle Moscovian stage in Eurasia. On the basis of the fusulinid biostratigraphic correlation of the Gangdong geologic sections (A) to (C), the limestone should be overlapped by faults and folds. Moreover the stratigraphic thickness of the limestone is thinner than the thickness of the limestone outcrop of the Gangdong geologic section. Therefore, the stratigraphic sequence of the Gangdong geologic section is represented as the Gangdong geologic section (A).
The Seokgaejae section is located along a timber access road and a driveway across Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province, and Samcheog city, Gangwon Province. Its stratigraphic column shows all of the ten strata of the lower Paleozoic Taebaek Group, Joseon Supergroup. The Seokgaejae section is proved to be scientifically important. Thirty-eight domestic/international journal papers have been published on this early Paleozoic stratigraphic site, and many distinguished researchers over the world have visited the site. However, the section has never been considered to be designated as a national natural monument and was not included in the adjacent Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark due to management or administrative issues. Although the Seokgaejae section sufficiently satisfies many of the national natural monument criteria, designation for the natural monument may not be justified because of the facts that the outcrop was artificially exposed by road construction; the chance of destruction of the outcrop is relatively few; demage on the outcrop to some extent does not impair the intrinsic value of the section; and the geomorphological/landscape value of the section is low. The application of the recently modified geological heritage assessment model to the Seokgaejae section shows very high scores on the scientific/educational, intrinsic, and functional values. Based on the improved geological heritage grade standard, the Seokgaejae section conforms to the national-level protection criteria. It is strongly recommended to manage the Seokgaejae section as a principal geosite by including it in the Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark. This case study on the Seokgaejae section also suggests that the process of application and endorsement of a national geopark need further improvement. As well as the improvement of the system or policy related to geological heritages, further efforts of the experts in various fields of geoscience are required in order for other geological heritages not to be neglected from now on.
Sedimentary facies of the Middle to Upper Cambrian Sesong Formation, Taebacksan Basin, are analyzed using detailed field mapping and stratigraphic section measuring. As a result, five sedimentary facies are recognized in the formation, which include lime nodule bearing shale facies, anastomosing wackestone-packstone facies, well-laminated siltstone facies, fine to medium sandstone facies and lime pebble conglomerate facies. Together with sedimentary facies analysis, study on vertical facies variation indicates that the Sesong Formation was deposited in an outer to inner shelf during relative sea-level fall. Especially, shallow marine aspects of the upper part of the Sesong Formation including 10-m-thick, fine to medium-grained sandstones appear to be very similar with the shallow marine strata accumulated during the Steptoean Stage (Dunderbergia) in Laurentia. These lithofacies comparisons of coeval strata between two continents suggest that sedimentation in the Sesong Formation reflects the influence of global sea-level fall occurred during the late Middle Cambrian to early Late Cambrian. As well, a stratigraphic discontinuity surface that may have sequence stratigraphic significance is recognized within the shallow marine sandstone beds of the uppermost Sesong Formation. This stratigraphic discontinuity surface may correspond to the Sauk II-III sequence boundary in Laurentia. Therefore, results delineated in this study will use a new stratigraphic paradigm for regional correlation of the Middle to Late Cambrian strata (e.g., the Sesong Formation) in the Taebacksan Basin, and will provide very useful information on intercontinental stratigraphic correlation in the future.
The Domi Basin in the South Sea of Korea is located between the Jeju Basin and Ulleung Basins, and is characterized by several sediment sags that are interested to have formed by crustal extension. This paper aims to derive an optimized seismic data processing procedure which helps stratigraphic interpretation of the Domi Basin. In particular, our data processing flow incorporated horizon velocity analysis (HVA) and surface-relative wave equation multiple rejection (SRWEMR) to improve the quality of stack section by enhancing the continuity of reflection events and suppressing peg-leg multiples respectively. As a result of processing procedures in this study, unconformities were recognized in the stack section that defines the early and middle Miocene, Eocene-Oligocene sequences. In addition, the overall quality of the stack section was increased as essential data to investigate the evolution of the basin. The suppression of multiple resulted in the identification of the Cretaceous basement. The data processing scheme evaluated through this study is expected to improve the standardization of processing sequences for seismic data from the Domi and adjacent Sora and north-Sora Basins.
A multichannel seismic profile from the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, was analysed in detail to interpret the middle to late Miocene sequence stratigraphic evolution of the area. A regressive package is overlying a transgressive package which, in turn, is underlain by older uplifted and deformed sedimentary layers. A prominent condensed section separates the regressive and transgressive packages. The transgressive package is characterized by onlapping onto the underlying uplifted and deformed strata. The regressive package contains six prograding sequences composed of seismically resolvable lowstand, highstand, and transgressive systems tracts. Most of the depositional sequences comprise lowstand systems tracts consisting of basin-floor fan, slope fan, and prograding complex. Potential reservoirs in the regressive package are turbidite sands in basin-floor fans, channel-fill sands and overbank sand sheets in slope fans, and incised valley-fill sands in the shelf. The shallow marine sands in transgressive packages are another type of reservoir. Detailed sequence stratigraphic analysis, seismic data reprocessing, and 3-D seismic survey are suggested for the successful hydrocarbon exploration in the study area.
Izumi sedimentary basin (ISB), west of Shikoku, Japan, is widely distributed across the western side of the Sakuragi Bend of the Japan Median Tectonic Line (MTL). It is not obvious how the ISB formed, but this feature is similar to an asymmetric pull-apart basin. The stratigraphic succession and tuff layers show that ages tend to decrease toward the Sakuragi Bend. We investigate whether the ISB is an asymmetric pull-apart basin using analogue model experiments with running sand. A pull-apart basin of length 60 cm and width 20 cm is formed, and secondary normal faults appear on the surrounding surface. A cross-section parallel to the direction of displacement shows that the stratigraphic succession of the pull-apart basin becomes younger toward the releasing bend. A listric normal fault, which has the opposite dip to the master fault, is observed in a cross-section perpendicular to the direction of displacement. These results are consistent with the observed properties of the ISB west of Shikoku, thereby supporting the possibility that the ISB is an asymmetric pull-apart basin.
Amended Water Quality Environment Preservation Law enacted that the areas where nonpoint pollution is serious can be designated as Nonpoint Source Management Region. According to Section 54 of Water Quality Environment Preservation Law, corresponding watersheds are areas where runoff from nonpoint pollution source may deteriorate river and lake water quality, residents' health and property, and ecosystem. The criteria are as followings; i) where nonpoint source contribution result in or will result in significant ecological destruction, iii) national or local industrial complexes and cities having population greater than one million where nonpoint source managements are necessary, iv) where specific measurement is necessary because of its geological and stratigraphic characteristics. In this research, detailed designation criteria was developed reflecting current nonpoint source management situation and its discharge characteristics. Depending on the result, target regions were also suggested. In additions, it will be desirable that the target regions are prioritized considering institutional execution availability, stakeholder's agreement, and connection with existing nonpoint source pollution management measures.
Multichannel deep seismic reflection data in the Main Pass area of the northern Gulf of Mexico are interpreted in this study for the stratigraphy and the depositional history. Structural analysis of deep seismic reflection data provides new information on the locations of paleo-shelf margins and the basement. The basement occurs at about $7.5{\cal}km$ depth at the northern end of seismic line LSU-1 in the Mississippi shelf. The Jurassic and early Cretaceous shelf margins occupy approximately the same position, whereas the Oligocene shelf margin occurs about 28 km farther landward. Ten major seismic stratigraphic sequences are identified for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sed-imentary section. Correlation of sequence boundaries defined in this study with those in other areas of the circum-Gulf region indicates that majo. regional unconformities formed at the mid-Miocene (10.5 Ma), mid-Oligocene (30 Ma), mid-Cretaceous (97 Ma), and top-Jurassic (131 Ma). Three distinct periods a.e recognized in the depositional history of the Main Pass area of the northern Gulf of Mexico: (1) shallow ma.me deposition du.ins the period from the opening of the Gulf to the mid-Cretaceous, (2) deep marine deposition in the Cretaceous to the mid-Oligocene, and (3) shallow marine deposition prevailed since the mid-Oligocene to present. A comparison of depositional rates between the Main Pass area and the Destin Dome area indicates that the northern Gulf of Mexico continental margin was initiated as a terrigenous sediment wedge province in the late Cretaceous.
Redefining the difference among the Yamaguchi's 'so-called Yeoncheon system,' north Korean's 'Rimjin System' and Yeoncheon Group of national geological map, authors tried to avoid a possible misunderstanding of concept between Yeoncheon Group and Imjingang fold Belt. As a tool of preliminary geological mapping and or N-S reconnaissance of the whole Yeoncheon Group, an interpretation technique of satellite image from various angles has been applied to understand the geometrical attitude of strike and dip of random spot, and a further concept like as cross section.
