This paper is the third of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected SI engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray for the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. In high swirl port, the most fuel remains at combustion chamber and upper cylinder region without being affected by injection timing. The macro-distributed state is not changed but the difference of the amount of fuel around the spark plug varies according to injection timing, which determines LML.

The fuel tends to remain in the upper region of the cylinder far from the spark plug and the distribution is not affected by the injection timing except 90 ATDC.
This paper is the second of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected Sl engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray fur the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. For low/medium swirl port, the early injection makes such a fuel distribution state that is upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich along the combustion chamber and cylinder by tumbling motion. On the other hand, the late injection induces upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich state due to the short fuel penetration.
We have performed to analyze the trophic state resulting of Lake Yongdam as a result of water quality and nutrient concentration. Lake Yongdam is artifitial multi-purpose Dam resulting from the floods of 2001. The water quality of Lake Yongdam may affect the status of the Geum river basin including the Daecheong reservoir. It is necessary to understand the trophic state to assess water quality until stability after flooding. Water quality was surveyed using depth and hydraulic condition analysis. Further density flow was estimated for stratification and trophic state of Lake Yongdam by chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration (2001~2004). And Environmental factors on chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration were analyzed statistically. Trophic state was evaluated as the oligotrophic state at the main stream of the reservoir and eutrophic state at the upper stream in 2001, but evaluated as eutrophic state in 2002 and 2003 by TSI of Aizaki. From the results of multiple regression analysis using stepwise method, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was shown to be very significant when nutrient concentration is high upon initial filling of the Dam. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration varied according to sample site, season and year. Concentration were high in the upper stream of Lake Yongdam 4, algae bloom in these watershed were affected by location and high nutrient levels in the summer season which have in turn increased phytoplankton bloom into the reservoir.
The purpose of this study is to investigate climatological variations from the temporal and spatial surface particulate organic carbon (POC) estimates based on SeaWiFS spectral radiance, and to determine the physical mechanisms that affect the distribution of pac in the Gulf of Mexico. 7-year monthly mean values of surface pac concentration (Sept. 1997 - Dec. 2004) were estimated from Maximum Normalized Difference Carbon Index (MNDCI) algorithm using SeaWiFS data. Synchronous 7-year monthly mean values of remote sensing data (sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface wind (SSW), sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), precipitation rate (PR)) and recorded river discharge data were used to determine physical forcing factors. The spatial pattern of POC was related to one or more factors such as river runoff, wind-derived current, and stratification of the water column, the energetic Loop Current/Eddies, and buoyancy forcing. The observed seasonal change in the POC plume's response to wind speed in the western delta region resulted from seasonal changes in the upper ocean stratification. During late spring and summer, the low-density river water is heated rapidly at the surface by incoming solar radiation. This lowers the density of the fresh-water plume and increases the near-surface stratification of the water column. In the absence of significant wind forcing, the plume undergoes buoyant spreading and the sediment is maintained at the surface by the shallow pycnocline. However, when the wind speed increases substantially, wind-wave action increases vertical motion, reducing stratification, and the sediment were mixed downward rather than spreading laterally. Maximum particle concentrations over the outer shelf and the upper slope during lower runoff seasons were related to the Loop Current/eddies and buoyancy forcing. Inter-annual differences of POC concentration were related to ENSO cycles. During the El Nino events (1997-1998 and 2002-2004), the higher pac concentrations existed and were related to high runoffs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico. During La Nina conditions (1999-2001), low Poe concentration was related to normal or low river discharge, and low PM/nutrient waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the stratification of fuel vapor with different in-cylinder flow, piston cavity and injection timings in an optically accessible engine. Three different piston shapes that are F(Flat), B(Bowl) and R(Re-entrance) types were used. The images of liquid and vapor fuel were captured under the motoring condition using Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence technique. As a result, at early injection timing of 270 BTDC, liquid fuel was evaporated faster by tumble flow than swirl flow, where most of fuel vapor were transported by tumble flow to the lower region and both sides of cylinder for the F-type piston. At late injection timing of 90 BTDC, tumble flow appears to be moving the fuel vapor to the intake side of the cylinder, while swirl flow convects the fuel vapor to the exhaust side. The concentration of mixture in the center region was highest in the B-type piston, while fuel vapor was transported to the exhaust side by swirl flow in F and R-type pistons. At the injection timing of 60 BTDC, the R-type piston was better for stratification due to a relatively smaller bowl diameter than the others.
The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under the ambient pressure condition, and the injection timing in the visualization engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior, we obtained the spray velocity using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and calculated the vorticity from spray velocity component. These results elucidated the relationship between vorticity and entropy which play an important role in the diffusion process for the early injection case and the stratification process for the late injection case. In addition, we quantified the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. Using these method, it was found that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation. We also found that the homogeneous diffusion rate increased as the injection timing moved to the early intake stroke process and BTDC $50^{\circ}$ was the most efficient injection timing for the stratified mixture formation during the compression stroke.
Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.
With the increase of human activities since the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration has increased, which is believed the cause of climate change. Methane ($CH_4$) fluxes were measured at two commercial swine barns (Jarvis and Guelph) with a four tower micrometeorological mass balance method. Two and three separate measurements were conducted at Jarvis and at Guelph, respectively. In the Jarvis experiments from May to July, mean $CH_4$ flux ($490.4{\mu}g/m^2/s$) during daytime was lower than that during nighttime ($678.0{\mu}g/m^2/s$) (p<0.05), which would be caused by break of slurry temperature stratification. In the Guelph experiment from January to April, mean $CH_4$ flux ($62.9{\mu}g/m^2/s$) during daytime was higher than that during nighttime ($39.0{\mu}g/m^2/s$) (p<0.05), which would be generated by high slurry temperature at 3 cm depth after April 6. Slurry temperature stratification in the Guelph experiment would happen from January to March.
