Seismic Analysis on Recycled Aggregate Concrete Frame Considering Strain Rate Effect

  • The nonlinear behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) frame structure are investigated by numerical simulation method with 3-D finite fiber elements. The dynamic characteristics and the seismic performance of the RAC frame structure are analyzed and validated with the shaking table test results. Specifically, the natural frequency and the typical responses (e.g., storey deformation, capacity curve, etc.) from Model 1 (exclusion of strain rate effect) and Model 2 (inclusion of strain rate effect) are analyzed and compared. It is revealed that Model 2 is more likely to provide a better match between the numerical simulation and the shaking table test as key attributes of seismic behaviors of the frame structure are captured by this model. For the purpose to examine how seismic behaviors of the RAC frame structure vary under different strain rates in a real seismic situation, a numerical simulation is performed by varying the strain rate. The storey displacement response and the base shear for the RAC frame structure under different strain rates are investigated and analyzed. It is implied that the structural behavior of the RAC frame structure is significantly influenced by the strain rate effect. On one hand, the storey displacements vary slightly in the trend of decreasing with the increasing strain rate. On the other hand, the base shear of the RAC frame structure under dynamic loading conditions increases with gradually increasing amplitude of the strain rate.

Strain hardening behavior of linear polymer melts

  • Linear high-density polyethylene (PE) was controlled to induce strain-hardening behavior by introducing a small amount of second component with an anisotropic structure. In order to form an anisotropic structure in the PE matrix, the polymer was extruded through a twin-screw extruder, and the structure was controlled by varying the extrusion conditions. Depending on conditions, the second component formed a film, thread and droplet structure. If the second component was kept rigid, the morphology evolution could be delayed and the second component could maintain its film or thread structure without further relaxation. In par­ticular, the second component of the thread structure made a physical network and gave rise to remarkable strain hardening behavior under high extension. This study suggests a new method that induces strain hard­ening behavior by introducing a physically networked second component into the linear polymer melt. This result is anticipated to improve the processibility of linear polymers especially when extensional flow is dominant, and to contribute to our understanding of strain hardening behavior.

  • To properly extract the strain components under varying operational conditions is very important in bridge health monitoring. The abnormal sensor readings can be correctly identified and the expected operational performance of the bridge can be better understood if each strain components can be accurately quantified. In this study, strain components under varying load conditions, i.e., temperature variation and live-load variation are evaluated based on field strain measurements collected from a real concrete box-girder bridge. Temperature-induced strain is mainly regarded as the trend variation along with the ambient temperature, thus a smoothing technique based on the wavelet packet decomposition method is proposed to estimate the temperature-induced strain. However, how to effectively extract the vehicle-induced strain is always troublesome because conventional threshold setting-based methods cease to function: if the threshold is set too large, the minor response will be ignored, and if too small, noise will be introduced. Therefore, an autoencoder framework is proposed to evaluate the vehicle-induced strain. After the elimination of temperature and vehicle-induced strain, the left of which, defined as the model error, is used to assess the operational performance of the bridge. As empirical techniques fail to detect the degraded state of the structure, a clustering technique based on Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to identify the damage occurrence and the validity is verified in a simulation study.

Analysis on the dynamic characteristics of RAC frame structures

  • The dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are carried out, the rate-dependent mechanical models of RAC are proposed. The dynamic mechanical behaviors of RAC frame structure are investigated by adopting the numerical simulation method of the finite element. It is indicated that the lateral stiffness and the hysteresis loops of RAC frame structure obtained from the numerical simulation agree well with the test results, more so for the numerical simulation which is considered the strain rate effect than for the numerical simulation with strain rate excluded. The natural vibration frequency and the lateral stiffness increase with the increase of the strain rate. The dynamic model of the lateral stiffness is proposed, which is reasonably applied to describe the effect of the strain rate on the lateral stiffness of RAC frame structure. The effect of the strain rate on the structural deformation and capacity of RAC is analyzed. The analyses show that the inter-story drift decreases with the increase of the strain rate. However, with the increasing strain rate, the structural capacity increases. The dynamic models of the base shear coefficient and the overturning moment of RAC frame structure are developed. The dynamic models are important and can be used to evaluate the strength deterioration of RAC structure under dynamic loading.

하이브리드 적층복합재료에서의 Iso-Strain 구조설계의 최적화 (Optimum Design for Iso-strain Structure of Hybrid Laminated Composite)

  • The optimum design of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strain structure has been studied by controling fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer. Fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer for iso-strain structure were designed. Combining the laminates of each layer of different reinforcing material, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composite for iso-strain structure were obtained. All these calculations were formed on computer systems, automatically for the hybridization. Using the data of some specific laminated composite such as glass and aramid reinforced composites, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strains structure were designed and verified by lamination theory. The strains of each layer of hybrid laminated composites are calculated and they turned out to be good agreements with the results obtained lamination theory.

정적 변형률을 이용한 플로팅 구조물의 손상탐지 (Damage Detection in Floating Structure Using Static Strain Data)

  • 최근 물 가까이에서 생활하고 여가를 보낼 수 있는 친수공간에 대한 욕구가 증가하면서 플로팅 구조물에 대한 관심이 커져가고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 정적 변형률을 이용한 플로팅 구조물의 손상탐지기법을 제안하였다. 손상을 탐지하기 위한 손상지수는 기존의 모달 변형에너지를 이용한 손상지수 법을 변형률을 적용할 수 있도록 확장하여 손상 전과 손상 후의 변형률로 나타내었으며, 손상지수 계산 후 손상부위를 결정하는 손상탐지는 패턴인식을 이용하였다. 제안된 이론의 정확성과 타당성은 플로팅 구조물의 축소모형을 제작하고 계측된 변형률 데이터에 적용하여 검증하였다.

  • 콘크리트 구조물에 발생하는 구조적인 균열은 재하하중에 의하여 콘크리트가 저항할 수 있는 인장강도보다 더 큰 인장강도가 가해졌을 때 콘크리트의 인장영역에서 발생하며, 이는 구조물의 노후화 또는 재하하중에 대한 저항능력이 감소되었음을 의미한다. 그러므로 콘크리트에 발생한 구조적 균열은 구조물에 치명적인 손상을 유발시킬 수 있으며, 구조물의 안전성 확보와 효과적인 유지관리를 위해서는 이를 검출하는 기법에 대한 연구가 반드시 필요한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 토목계측 분야에서 가장 널리 활용되고 있는 변형률 센서를 철근콘크리트 보에 부착하여 보의 인장부와 압축부의 변형률을 측정하는 실내실험을 수행하였으며, 하중 재하에 따른 변형률의 변화, 측정부위의 탄성계수 변화, 그리고 중립축의 변화 등을 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과로부터, 측정된 변형률을 이용하여 중립축의 변화 추이를 추정하므로써 가장 효과적으로 균열을 검출할 수 있는 알고리즘을 제시하였다.

경계요소법을 이용한 평면변형율요소의 확률해석 (Probability Analysis of Plane Strain Element using Boundary Element Method)

  • The objectives of this study is intended to analyze stresses using the boundary element method and probability analysis for agricultural structure. Loads and material properties are an important factor when analyzing the structure. Until now, designing structure, loads and material properties are applied deterministic value. However, load and material properties involve uncertainties due to those change probabilistic and deterministic methods could not consider uncertainties. To solve these problems, the reliability analysis based on probability properties scheme was developed. Reliability analysis is easy to approach to analysis frame structure, however it has limitation when solving plane stress strain problems a kind of agricultural structures. The BEM (Boundary Element Method) is able to analysis plane strain problems by boundary conditions. Thus, this study applied boundary element method to analysis plane strain problem, load and material properties as a probabilistic value to calculate the analytical model using Monte Carlo simulations were developed.

Compressive stress-strain behavior of RFAC after high temperature

  • This paper discusses the effect of high temperatures (Ts) on the compressive strength and stress-strain curve of recycled fine aggregate concrete (RFAC), based on the experimental results. A total of 90 prisms (100 mm×100 mm×300 mm) were tested. The results show that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of RFAC specimens decreased significantly with increasing T values. As T increased, the strain corresponding to peak stress decreased first when T<200℃ and then increased afterwards. With increasing T values, the stress-strain curves became flat gradually, the peak stress dropped gradually, and εp decreased when T<200℃ and increased in the T range of 400-800℃. A stress-strain relations for RFAC exposed to high Ts is proposed, which agree quite well with the test results and may be used to practical applications.

The effect of strain on the electronic properties of MoS2 monolayers

  • We utilize first-principles calculations within density-functional theory to investigate the possibility of strain engineering in the tuning of the band structure of two-dimensional $MoS_2$. We find that the band structure of $MoS_2$ monolayers transits from direct to indirect when mechanical strain is applied. In addition, we discuss the change in the band gap energy and the critical stains for the direct-to-indirect transition under various strains such as uniaxial, biaxial, and pure shear. Biaxial strain causes a larger change, and the pure shear stain causes a small change in the electronic band structure of the $MoS_2$ monolayer. We observe that the change in the interaction between molecular orbitals due to the mechanical strain alters the band gap type and energy.
