The microfabricated test structures were used in order to evaluate the stress characteristics in films. The test structures were fabricated using surface micromachining technique, including HF vapor phase etching as an effective release method. The fabricated structures were micro strain gauge, cantilever-type vernier gauge and bridge for stress measurement, and cantilever for stress gradient measurement. The strain was measures by observing the deformation of the structures occurred after release etching and the amount of deformation can be detected by micro vernier gauge, which has gauge resolution of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The detection principles and the degree of precision for the measured strain were also discussed. The characteristics of residual stress in LPCVD polysilicon films were studied using these test structures. The stress gradient due to the stress variation through the film thickness was calculated by measuring the deflection at the cantilever free end.

Plane strain punch stretching test (PSST) was developed to evaluate stamping formability of sheet materials. In this test, the rectangular specimen of sheet material is uniformly stretched up to fracture by raising a specially designed punch to certainly assure plane strain stretching deformation along the longitudinal direction of the specimen. The stamping formability was evaluated by limit punch height(LPH) in plane strain punch stretching test compared to limit dome height(LDH) in hemispherical punch stretching test. LPH-value in PSST well ranks the stamping formability of various material and correlates with press performance. Moreover by using ultrasonic thickness gauge the plane strain intercept-limit plane strain(FLCo)-in forming limit curve can be accurately determined from thickness measurement around the fracture area. The FLCo derived from thickness measurement well correlates with the results from circle grid analysis for the deformed circle grid marked on the surface of the specimen.

The 4-axis strain-gauge, which is widely applied to military weapon systems, is operated in poor temperature and vibration conditions, tolerance may increase and malfunctions may occur. To improve this, this paper proposes a signal-processing software technique for the tolerance of the 4-axis strain gauge applied to a military weapon system. First, the tolerance of the strain-gauge and the signal processing circuit according to the ambient temperature were evaluated and analyzed. Second, a software technique for processing the dead zone and offset area that can improve the tolerance of the strain-gauge is proposed. The experimental results applying the software technique confirmed that it operated normally in the temperature test and operation test. Therefore, the proposed software technique is valid and can be used as useful information to improve tolerance due to ambient temperature and vibration when designing a system using a strain-gauge.
The most frequent type of safety-accident in industry is the overturning of forklift. The leading cause of this accident is overload in forklift. Thus, it is needed to measure the weight on board of forklift. The most common method is based on load cell, and this method has the merit of high accuracy. However, high price is the disadvantage of this method. In this paper, we propose the new measurement system of the weight on board of forklift based on the strain gauge sensor, which has the disadvantage of low accuracy. The differentiation of the proposed system is that the shape of the strain gauge sensor customized for anchor bolt of forklift in order to improve the accuracy and durability. In system four strain gauge sensors are inserted into four anchor bolts. The test result shows that 1% error of measurement is obtained in the proposed anchor bolt type strain gauge sensors.
Long-gauge carbon fiber line (CFL) sensors have received considerable attention in the past decade. However, there is still a need for an in-depth investigation of their measuring accuracy. This study investigates the accuracy of carbon fiber line sensors to monitor and differentiate the flexural behavior of two beams, one reinforced with steel bars alone and the other reinforced with steel and basalt fiber-reinforced polymer bars. A distributed set of long-gauge carbon fiber line, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), and traditional strain gauge sensors was mounted on the tensile concrete surface of the studied beams to compare the results and assess the accuracies of the proposed sensors. The test beams were loaded monotonically under four-point bending loading until failure. Results indicated the importance of using long-gauge sensors in providing useful, accurate, and reliable information regarding global structural behavior, while point sensors are affected by local damage and strain concentrations. Furthermore, long-gauge carbon fiber line sensors demonstrated good agreement with the corresponding Fiber Bragg Grating sensors with acceptable accuracy, thereby exhibiting potential for application in monitoring the health of large-scale structures.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to provide the method of how to measure the coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete using temperature compensation principle of electrical resistance strain gauge. METHODS : The gauge factor compensation method and thermal output(temperature-induced apparent strain) correction method of self-temperature compensation gauge were investigated. From the literature review, coefficient of thermal expansion measurement method based on the thermal output differential comparison between reference material(invar) and unknown material(concrete) was suggested. RESULTS : Thermal output is caused by two reasons; first the electrical resistivity of the grid conductor is changed by temperature variation and the second contribution is due to the differential thermal expansion between gauge and the test material. Invar was selected as a reference material and it's coefficient of thermal expansion was measured as $2.12{\times}10^{-6}m/m/^{\circ}C$. by KS M ISO 11359-2. The reliability of the suggested measurement method was evaluated by the thermal output measurement of invar and mild steel. Finally coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete material for pavement was successfully measured as $15.45{\times}10^{-6}m/m/^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : The coefficient of thermal expansion measurement method using thermal output differential between invar and unknown concrete material was evaluated by theoretical and experimental aspects. Based on the test results, the proposed method is considered to be reasonable to apply for coefficient of thermal expansion measurement.
An accurate measurement of the train-track interaction forces is important for track performance evaluation. In the field calibration test as a wheel load measurement process, the calibration system creates a different boundary condition in comparison with that in the train wheel passage. This study aims to evaluate a reliability of the field calibration test in the process of wheel load measurement. Finite element models were developed to compare the deformed shapes, bending moment and shear force profiles on the rail section. The analysis results revealed that the deformed shapes and their associated bending moment profiles on the rail are significantly different in two numerical simulations of the calibration test and the train wheel load passage. However, the shear stress profile on the rail section of the strain gauge installation in the field was almost identical, which may imply that the current calibration test is sufficiently reliable.
Statement of problem. Unreasonable distal cantilevered implant-supported prosthesis can mask functional problems of reconstruction temporarily, but it can cause serious strain and stress around its supported implant and surrounding alveolar bone. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate strain of implants supporting distal cantilevered fixed prosthesis with two different cantilevered length under distal cantilevered static load. Material and methods. A partially edentulous mandibular test model was fabricated with auto-polymerizing resin (POLYUROCK; Metalor technologies, Stuttgart, Swiss) and artificial denture teeth (Endura; Shofu inc., Kyoto, Japan). Two implants-supported 5-unit screw-retained cantilevered fixed prosthesis was made using standard methods with Type III gold alloy (Harmony C&B55; Ivoclar-vivadent, Liechtenstein, Germany) for superstructure and reinforced hard resin (Tescera; Ivoclar-vivadent, Liechtenstein, Germany) for occlusal material. Two strain gauges (KFG-1-120-C1-11L1M2R; KYOWA electronic instruments, Tokyo, Japan) were then attached to the mesial and the distal surface of each standard abutment with adhesive (M-bond 200; Tokuyama, Tokyo, Japan). Total four strain gauges were attached to test model and connected to dynamic signal conditioning strain amplifier (CTA1000; Curiotech inc., Paju, Korea). The stepped $20{\sim}100$ N in 25 N increments, cantilevered static load 8mm apart (Group I) or 16mm apart (Group II), were applied using digital push-pull gauge (Push-Pull Scale & Digital Force Gauge, Axis inc., Seoul, Korea). Each step was performed ten times and every strain signal was monitored and recorded. Results. In case of Group I, the strain values were surveyed by $80.7{\sim}353.8{\mu}m$ in Ch1, $7.5{\sim}47.9{\mu}m/m$ in Ch2, $45.7{\sim}278.6{\mu}m/m$ in Ch3 and $-212.2{\sim}718.7{\mu}m/m$ in Ch4 depending on increasing cantilevered static load. On the other hand, the strain values of Group II were surveyed by $149.9{\sim}612.8{\mu}m/m$ in Ch1, $26.0{\sim}168.5{\mu}m/m$ in Ch2, $114.3{\sim}632.3{\mu}m/m$ in Ch3, and $-323.2{\sim}-894.7{\mu}m/m$ in Ch4. Conclusion. A comparative statistical analysis using paired sample t-test about Group I Vs Group II under distal cantilevered load shows that there are statistical significant differences for all 4 channels (P<0.05).
A digital image correlation(DIC) method is a whole-field measurement technique that acquires surface displacements and strains from images information which characterized a random speckle as intensity grey levels. Recently years, this DIC method is being developed and used increasingly in various research. In this study, we tried to apply to aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6) using DIC method and strain gauge. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine a strain. The test specimen used in this study was an aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6, thickness 1 mm). For a strain measurement, a strain gauge was attached at the center of a specimen. A specimen was lightly sprayed with a white paint and a black dot pattern was sprayed on its fully dried white surface to obtain a random speckle. The experimental apparatus used to perform the tensile test consisted of universal dynamic tester(5 kN; T.O. Co.) under displacement speed of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mm/min. A Model 5100 B Scanner(V. Co.) used to obtain a strain. A CCD camera connected to a PC uses to record the images of the specimen surface. After acquisition, the images were transferred to PC where the DIC software was implemented. An acquired image was evaluated by the DIC program. DIC method for displacement and strain was suggests and it results show a good consistent remarkably. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine surface strain was better than by using classical measurements. The strain field measurement using a DIC is so useful that it can be applied to map strain distributions at a full area. DIC method can evaluate a strain change so it can predict a location of fracture. The findings of the investigation suggest that the DIC method is an efficient and reliable tool for full-field monitoring and detailed damage characterization of materials.
Since reinforced soil walls were introduced in domestic civil engineering society in early 1980's, various reinforcing materials including metal strips, bar mats, and sheet-type reinforcement using geotextile, geogrid, and etc. have been developed for construction purpose. Especially, the geogrid has been mostly used as a reinforcement for reinforced earth structures. This paper describes the tensile behaviors of four types of domestic geogrids. Also, a series of the wide-width tensile tests on three types of geogrids were conducted to assess the reliability of the tensile strains in geogrid measured by strain gauge. The tensile strain by strain gauge is larger than real strain of the geogrid and a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain non-linearly increase with increasing the tensile strain. However, when the tensile strain is smaller than 3%, a difference between strain gauge reading and real strain is negligible.
