  • This paper is aiming to study the performances of reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) short columns confined with aramid fibre-reinforced polymer (AFRP) sheets. An experimental program, which involved 45 confined columns and nine unconfined columns, was carried out in this study. All the columns were circular in cross section and tested under axial compressive load. The considered parameters included the concrete strength, amount of AFRP layers, and ratio of hoop reinforcements. Based on the experimental results, a prediction model for the axial stress-strain curves of the confined columns was proposed. It was observed from the experiment that there was a great increment in the compressive strength of the columns when the amount of AFRP layers increases, similar as the ultimate strain. However, these increments were reduced as the concrete strength increasing. Comparisons with other existing prediction models present that the proposed model can provide more accurate predictions.

  • This work describes a method for determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models of metallic materials. The focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe based superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression test data at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of the model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process conditions were generated from the microstructural analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Also, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the average grain size data obtained from other compression tests of the Alloy 718 specimens with the initial grain size of $59.5{\mu}m$.

  • A dynamic finite element analysis of a rig test model for truck chassis systems is conducted to establish an appropriate model designed to predict the fatigue life. A reference Belgian road input, which has been obtained from a field test, is imposed on the finite element model in the modal finite element analysis, and the resulting strain history is employed for the prediction of the fatigue life. This is compared with the prediction based upon the strain history measured in the field test. The two agree with each other within the limitation of the field data and the input data to the model. The high frequency responses over 50 Hz are confirmed to be negligible as far as their effect on the fatigue life is concerned.

  • Laboratory investigation reveals that rockfills exhibit significant stress-path-dependent behavior during shearing, therefore realistic prediction of deformation of rockfill structures requires suitable constitutive models to properly reproduce such behavior. This paper evaluates the capability of a strain hardening model proposed by the authors, by comparing simulation results with large-scale triaxial stress-path test results. Despite of its simplicity, the model can simulate essential aspects of the shear behavior of rockfills, including the non-linear stress-strain relationship, the stress-dependence of the stiffness, the non-linear strength behavior, and the shearing contraction and dilatancy. More importantly, the model is shown to predict the markedly different stress-strain and volumetric behavior along various loading paths with fair accuracy. All parameters required for the model can be derived entirely from the results of conventional large triaxial tests with constant confining pressures.

  • In case of an urban tunnel, the displacement of ground base controls the tunnel design because it is built on shallow and unconsolidated ground many times. There are more insufficiency to describe the ground movement which coincides in the measured result of the situ because the design of an urban tunnel is dependent on the method of numerical analysis used to the existing elastic and elasto-plastic models. We studied about the prediction for the ground movement of a shallow tunnel in unconsolidated ground, mechanism of collapse, and settlement. Also this paper shows comparison with the existing elastic and elasto-plastic model using the unlinear analysis of the strain-softening model. We can model the real ground movement as the increasement of ground surface inclination or occurrence of shear band by using strain-softening model for the result of ground movement of an urban NATM tunnel.

  • The fact that nonlinearity and anisotropy of soil should be considered for the proper estimation of soil deformation has been recongnized for a long time. In this study, a new stiffness model which can reflect both nonlinearity and anisotropy is proposed. Nonlinearity is simulated by Ramberg-Osgood model and anisotropy is modeled with the cross-anisotropic elasticity. Analysis results with the developed model compared with those from analyses using linear isotropic model, linear anisotropic model, and nonlinear isotropic model. In the triaxial compression like condition, the effects of nonlinearity on the vertical strain are significant, but soil anisotropy does not affect the vertical strain. In 1-dimensional deformation condition, however, both nonlinearity and anisotropy of soil influence the final magnitude of the vertical strain. Also the increase of poisson's ratio magnifies the effect of anisotropy on the vertical strain in this condition.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has recently been applied as an alternative to conventional concrete in construction due to its extremely high compressive and tensile strength, and enhanced durability. However, up to date, there has been insufficient information regarding the confinement behavior of UHPC columns. Therefore, this study aims to perform an assessment of axial stress-strain model for UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns. The equations for calculating the confined peak stress and its corresponding strain of confined concrete in existing models suggested by Johansson (2002), Sakino et al. (2004), Han et al. (2005), Hatzigeorgiou (2008) were modified based on the regression analysis of test results in Schneider (2006) in order to increase the prediction accuracy for the case of confined UHPC. Furthermore, a new axial stress-strain model for confined UHPC was developed. To examine the suitability of the modified models and the proposed model for confined UHPC, axial stress-strain curves derived from the proposed models were compared with those obtained from previous test results. After validating the proposed model, an extensive parametric study was undertaken to investigate the effects of diameter-to-thickness ratio, steel yield strength and concrete compressive strength on the complete axial stress-strain curves, the strength and strain enhancement of UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns.

  • This paper predicts the shear stress-strain relationship of reinforced concrete columns using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) considered bending moment and axial force effects. Nine columns with various shear span-to-depth ratios and axial force ratios were tested to verify the theoretical results obtained from TATM. Shear stress-strain relationship obtained from TATM was agreed well with test results conducted by bis study than other truss models.

  • Conventional rolling (symmetric) and differential speed rolling (DSR) were both applied to AA1050 sheets at various velocity ratios, from 1 to 2 between the top and bottom rolls. An electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique was used to measure texture inhomogeneity through the thickness direction. After the annealing process, the annealing texture of the DSR processed sheets was different from that of conventionally rolled sheets. The velocity ratio between the top and bottom rolls affected the texture inhomogeneity and macroscopic plastic strain ratio of the AA1050 sheets. A prediction for the macroscopic plastic strain ratio of AA1050 sheets was carried out using a visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) polycrystal model. The strain ratio directionality that was predicted using the VPSC polycrystal model was in good agreement with experimental results.
