A series of isotropic consolidation tests, undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was carried out to investigate the physical characteristics and behaviours of marine silty sands collected from the western coast of Korea. This study also included a theoretical development of the constitutive equation to evaluate stress-strain relationship and volume change of silty sands. The results and main conclusions of the study are summarized as follows; 1. Isotropic compression and swelling index are linearly decreased with an increase in relative density. 2. Both undrained shear strengh and elastic modulus are increased with an increase in relative density and confining pressure. 3. Internal friction angles obtained from drained and undrained compression tests of the soils are proportional to relative density. 4. The phenomenon of dilatancy of each sample is less profound when confining stress is increased but more profound when relative density is increased. 5. The slope of critical state lines is 1.78 for Saemangum, 1.70 for Siewha and 1.26 for Sukmoon sands. 6. In this study, Drucker-Praper type criterion is used and hardening function of Cap model is modified by hyperbolic fuction. This will improve a lack of physical meaning of hardening parameters in conventional Cap model. 7. A newly developed constitutive equation to the forementioned silty sands and checked its applicability. This is in good agreement with the measured data.
Experimental study of the deterioration of high-temperature rock subjected to rapid cooling is essential for thermal engineering applications. To evaluate the influence of thermal shock on heated granite with different temperatures, laboratory tests were conducted to record the changes in the physical properties of granite specimens and the dynamic mechanical characteristics of granite after rapid cooling were experimentally investigated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that there are threshold temperatures ($500-600^{\circ}C$) for variations in density, porosity, and P-wave velocity of granite with increasing treatment temperature. The stress-strain curves of $500-1000^{\circ}C$ show the brittle-plastic transition of tested granite specimens. It was also found that in the temperature range of $200-400^{\circ}C$, the through-cracks induced by rapid cooling have a decisive influence on the failure pattern of rock specimens under dynamic load. Moreover, the increase of crack density due to higher treatment temperature will result in the dilution of thermal shock effect for the rocks at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Eventually, a fitting formula was established to relate the dynamic peak strength of pretreated granite to the crack density, which is the exponential function.

In this study, a strain-controlled fatigue test of widely-used 316L stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties was conducted, in order to assess its fatigue life. Low cycle fatigue behaviors were analyzed at room temperature, as a function of the strain amplitude and strain ratio. The material was hardened during the initial few cycles, and then was softened during the long post period, until failure occurred. The fatigue life decreased with increasing strain amplitude. Masing behavior in the hysteresis loop was shown under the low strain amplitude, whereas the high strain amplitude caused non-Masing behavior and reduced the mean stress. Low cycle fatigue life prediction based on the cyclic plastic energy dissipation theory, considering Masing and non-Masing effects, showed a good correlation with the experimental results.

This paper investigated plane strain stress intensity factors caused by thermal impact on a center-crack strip. The crack was aligned perpendicularly to the strip boundary. The problem was analysed by determining the dislocation density function in the singular integral equations formulated by the dislocation theory. Under the abrupt temperature change along the edge, the center crack behaved as a mode I crack due to the symmetric geometry. The value of maximum stress intensity factor monotonically increased until the ratio of dimensionless crack length approached to about 0.3, followed by gradual decrease. As a result, a critical corresponding crack length was determined.

Interrupted creep tests for investigating the structural degradation during creep were conducted for a Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel in the range of stress from 71 to 167 MPa and temperature from 873 to 923 K. The change of hardness and tempered martensitic lath width was measured in grip and gauge parts of interrupted creep specimens. The lath structure was thermally stable in static conditions. However, it was not stable during creep, and the structural change was enhanced by creep strain. The relation between the change in lath width and creep strain was described quantitatively. The change in Vickers hardness was expressed by a single valued function of creep LCR(life consumption ratio). Based on the empirical relation between strain and lath width, a model was proposed to describe the relation between change in hardness and creep LCR. The comparison of the model with the empirical relation suggests that about 65% of hardness loss is due to the decrease of dislocation density accompanied by the movement of lath boundaries. The role of precipitates on subboundaries was discussed in connection with the abnormal subgrain growth appearing in low stress regime.

Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.
we evaluated the effects of joining process such as contact method. shape of joined area and pressure on the electrical and mechanical properties of Bi-2223 superconducting tape, Specifically. the current capacity of the jointed tape was measured as a function of uniaxial pressure. and the thermal shock, bonding strength and the thermal of the tape were evaluated and correlated to the microstructural evolution. It was observed that the current capacity was significanrly dependent on the uniaxial pressure The jointed tape, fabricated with a pressure of 1,000-1,600 Mpa. showed the highest value of current capacity results from improvements in core density, contacting area and grain alignment, ect. In addition, the strength of jointed tape was measured to be 86 Mpa, which is about 88% of the unjoined ape's strength. The irreversible strain($\varepsilon$irrev) for the jointed tape was measured to be 0.1%, smaller than that of unjoined tape ($\varepsilon$irrev= 0.3%). The decrease in the strength and irreversible strain for jointed tape is believed to be due to the irregular geometry/morphology of the transition area of the tape.
In this study, considering dissipated energy in fracture process zone (FPZ), a novel criterion based on maximum strain energy release rate (SER) for orthotropic materials is presented. General case of in-plane loading for cracks along the fibers is assumed. According to the experimental observations, crack propagation is supposed along the fibers and the reinforcement isotropic solid (RIS) concept is employed as a superior model for orthotropic materials. SER in crack initiation and propagation phases is investigated. Elastic properties of FPZ are extracted as a function of undamaged matrix media and micro-crack density. This criterion meaningfully links between dissipated energy due to toughening mechanisms of FPZ and the macroscopic fracture by defining stress intensity factors of the damaged zone. These coefficients are used in equations of maximum SER criterion. The effect of crack initiation angle and the damaged zone is considered simultaneously in this criterion and mode II stress intensity factor is extracted in terms of stress intensity factors of damage zone and crack initiation angle. This criterion can evaluate the effects of FPZ on the fracture behavior of orthotropic material. Good agreement between extracted fracture limit curves (FLC's) and available experimental data proves the ability of the new proposed criterion.

In this study, the small strain shear moduli ($G_{max}$) of uncemented and gypsum-cemented sands are evaluated by performing a series of bender element tests on the specimens reconstituted in the calibration chamber. It is observed from the experimental results that $G_{max}$ of crushed-sands is about 35~50% smaller than that of natural sands. The increase in gypsum content is observed to result in an exponential increase of $G_{max}$ value. It is also shown that the relative density has more significant effect on $G_{max}$ of cemented sand, whereas the vertical effective stress has more significant influence on $G_{max}$ of uncemented one. A prediction equation for cemented sand is expressed as a function of gypsum content as well as void ratio and vertical effective stress.
Idea of using piezoelectric materials with flexible structures made of rubber-like materials is quite novel. In this study a non-linear finite element model based on updated Lagrangian (UL) approach has been developed for dynamic response and its control of rubber-elastic material with surface-bonded PVDF patches/layers. A compressible stain energy density function has been used for the modeling of the rubber component. The results obtained are compared with available analytical solutions and other published results in some cases. Some results are reported as new results which will be useful for future references since the number of published results is not sufficient.
