The resistance-demand approach has emerged as an effective approach for determining the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams. This approach is based on the fact that both the shear resistance and shear demand are correlated with flexural tensile strain from compatibility and equilibrium requirements. The basic shear strength, under a given loading is determined from the intersection of the demand and resistance curves. This paper verifies the applicability of resistance-demand procedure for predicting the shear capacity of high strength concrete beams without web reinforcement. A total of 18 beams were constructed and tested in four-point bending up to failure. The test variables included the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the shear span to depth ratio, and the beam depth. The shear capacity of the beams was predicted using the proposed procedure and compared with the experimental values. The results of the comparison showed good prediction capability and can be useful to design practice.

The various microbial tests were performed to determine bioremediation agent capacity for eight strains isolated from the oil contaminated regions. Two tests for isolated strains were conducted such as cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity. The biodegradation of SHM (saturated hydrocarbon mixture) and AHM (aromatic hydrocarbon mixture) with the strains also was carried out. The strains having higher cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity degraded petroleum oil effectively. The degradation capacity for SHM was represented more than 90% in YS-7 and WLH-1 of isolated strains, and KH3-2 were capable of degrading AHM. Especially, WLH-1 as yeast was shown more than two or three times in the degradation capacity of automobile engine lubricants and the biomonitoring results of contaminated soil for residual oil degrading test showed that the hydrocarbon biodegradation was increased in the second treatment by this strain.
When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.

Experimental research was conducted to investigate the characteristic of various CFRP strengthening methods. A total of 4 specimens of 3.3m length were tested in four point bending after strengthening them with externally bonded CFRP plates. The CFRP plates were bonded without prestress or with prestress levels of CFRP plate strain $0.5\%$. The non-prestressed specimen without anchor plate failed by separation of the plate from the beam due to premature debonding while the non-prestressed specimen with anchor plate failed by CFRP fracture and showed the significant increase of ductility capacity. In addition, the prestressed specimens failed by concrete compression failure. The maximum load and ductility capacity were most significantly increased.
The piled-raft foundation, a new design concept, is one of the most effective kinds of foundation for reducing settlement of structures. An alternative piled-raft system with disconnection cap and a sand cushion between the pile and raft was also investigated to compare the influence of ultimate bearing capacity and settlement. Load-settlement relation curves were used to evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity. In the numerical analyses, a plane strain elasto-plastic finite element model (Mohr-Coulomb model) was used to present the response of the piled-raft foundation.

An experimental study to evaluate structural capacity of an embedded plate connected with prestressed concrete beam was performed. Embedded steel plates and prestressed concrete beam were connected with stud-bolts at the ends of concrete beam specimens. About 1,000 kN concentrated load was applied at 450mm away from the end of beam specimen. A 3,000 kN capacity static Oil-jack was used to direct concentrated load. The maximum strain of stud-bolt recorded $90{\times}10^{-6}$(mm/mm) and wide width cracks were not founded. Any falling failures of concrete and large deformations were not founded either between steel plate and prestressed concrete specimen. As a result, construction performance can be improved using this embedded steel plate connection system apply to large space educational facilities.
In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with an incremental damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. The composite undergoing damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. To describe the load carrying capacity of cracked reinforcement, the average stress of cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneity in an infinite body as proposed in the previous paper is introduced. An incremental constitutive relation on particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including progressive cracking of the reinforcements is developed based on Eshelby's (1957) equivalent inclusion method and Mori and Tanaka\`s (1973) mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of composites is demonstrated.

In this study, the charactersistics of horizontal drains used to stabilize the dredged fill are investigated experimentally by doing tensile strength test, discharge capacity test, and filter clogging test. The types of the drains selected for the study are filament type (Tyre-E), embossed type(Type-P) and heat bonded cubic type with the thickness 10mm(Type-010) and 5mm(Type-05). The results of tensile strength and discharge capacity test show that the performance of drain Type-O10 was better than the other drains. This is caused by the fact that the lattice shape core of drain Type-O10 has strong rigidity and minimizes the loss of the sectional area of discharge with increased confining pressure. Analyzing the compatibility of filters by the results of the strength characteristics test and clogging test, the filter of filament type drain produced with polyester clothed polyamide performed well.
Anchors find their use in providing tie-back resistance for submerged footings, transmission towers, tunnels and ocean structures. Laboratory model teats were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated bentonite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based an the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. Test results are as follows. 1) In creep tests for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time. 2) Displacement increased with the increase of the sustain load and embedded ratio in soil. 3) If the load is less than or equal to 75% of the short-term ultimate uplift capacity, a complete pullout does not occur due to creep.

The effectiveness of shear strengthening with glass fiber sheets on normal or low strength RC beams have been investigated experimentally. A design compressive strength of concrete of 13.5MPa has been planned considering the degradation state of the existing structure to be strengthened in this study. Also, concrete surface reinforcing agent was applied to increase bond capacity between concrete and GFRP sheets in case of low strength RC beams. Comparing the test results of low and normal strength beams strengthened with GFRP sheets indicated that total shear capacity of beams was decreased with concrete strength decreased, but the shear strengthening capacity of GFRP sheets are hardly affected by concrete strength. In addition, shear strengthening effects of RC beams strengthened with GFRP sheets can be estimated by $\rho_w{\cdot}f_w$ based on the maximum effective strain of FRP sheet proposed by ACI 440.2R recommendation.
