  • A fiber processing method, which might be an alternative for conventional refining process, was introduced. The method consists of repetitive, gentle, mechanical impacts on fiber, and ensued fiber uncurling process. This method was very effective for OCC and BCTMP for increasing WRVs (water retention value) while keeping fiber lengths from shortening. For OCC and BCTMP, gentle mechanical impacts on fibers using Hobart mixer increased breaking lengths and tear strengths simultaneously at fast drainage level, and straightening fibers using kady mill increased those strength properties further. For SwBKP and HwBKP, only mechanical impacts using the mixer were effective on increasing tensile and tear strength at fast drainage, but not kady mill treatment. The strength increases of BCTMP by this alternative fiber processing method were exceptionally high. An extensive engineering development should be followed to actualize this fiber processing mechanism in an energy-effect way.

  • This study was performed to quantify microscopically morphological characteristics of cotton fiber to identify parameters for quality evaluation using image analysis . The image of each fiber was captured by a Pc-based color imaging system using a conventional microscope. Ends of individual cotton fibers were glued on a microscope slide without any tension or straightening. A modified watershed technique was implemented to identify individual convolution segments, which were defined as sections of the fiber bordered by two neighboring convolutions. Length, area and perimeter of each convolution segment were measured directly from the image . Average width, shape factor and number of convolution segments in mm were calculated from the measured parameters. The performance of the image analysis algorithm was compared with visual varieties of cotton . The image analysis results agreed with visual inspection in 89.6% of the tested images.

  • Recognition of IC chip pattern requires extraction of features, which have the information of vertex position and orientation. Edges are extracted and straightening algorithm is applied to the edges, so that lines are obtained. With these extracted data, the coordinate and orientation of all vertices are extracted and vertex-form matching is applied to the locally overlapped area of neighborhood frames to have global coordinate of IC chip.

  • This study is to investigate the pressure wave characteristics and the maximum pressure rise generated by instantaneous valve closure at the end of the straightening polybutylene double piping system with header. Experiments were conducted under the following conditions: initial pressure $1{\sim}5$ bar, flow velocity $0.5{\sim}3.0$ m/s and water temperature $25^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the straightening process of a steel bar straightener is studied. The straightener carries out the bending and reverse bending process repeatedly. Plastic theory is employed for the analysis of roller-supporting-load, and the residual stress and the axial load of a steel bar are calculated by using the bending moment. The Bauschinger effect and plastic moment are calculated by using the residual stress and Swift's method respectively. It is verified from the experiments that the displacement calculated from theory makes it possible to straighten a steel bar.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a stationary blade for six kinds of measuring angles of attack, $0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$ at Reynolds number of $5.8{\times}10^4$. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors around blade were measured by 2-D PIV system where laser-based illumination and two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm were adopted. Velocity profiles show uniform approaching flow from the straightening equipment, and experimental results reveal that separation phenomena occur and the separation point moves upstream with increasing angle of attack.

  • The sand bar has developed at the junction of the Kum-ho River and Shin-ryoung River. The sediment transported from the Kumho River basin has decreased since the Youngchon Dam has been functioning. Sand bar and the vicinity of the bottleneck at the upstrem of Kumho River and Osu Island which is consisted of sand bar have inundated frequently. This study was carried out through the hydraulic model test to calibrate the hydraulic effect from removal of sand bar in the river and straightening the river course by land reclamation. The water level of river at the vicinity of bottleneck can be lowered as much as 0.40~0.7m when the sand bar is removed. When river is straightened the river course by land reclamation the water level can be lowered as half of removal of sand bar.

  • Longitudinal deformation due to welding of built-up beams must be straightened for attachment with plates. Straightening of deformation is carried out by much experienced workers and requires much time and labor. In this study, a procedure to calculate the required reverse curvatures to straighten the welding deformation is presented and a method to simulate the fabrication procedures for the built-up beams is developed for the purpose of improvement of productivity.

  • This study is to investigate the pressure wave characteristics and the absorption of maximum and minimum pressure generated by instantaneous valve closure at the end of the straightening copper piping system with and without a water hammer arrester. Experiments were conducted under the following conditions : initial pressure 1~5 bar, flow velocity 0.6~3.0 m/s, water temperature $20^{\circ}C$ and air volume of water hammer arrester $80~180^cm^3$. Experimental results show that the optimum air volume of water hammer arrester is 110㎤.

  • Objectives : Riding stance has been basic traning of chinese martial arts and Gi-gong. The aim of this study is to observe history, methods, effect of riding stance. Methods : Compare riding stances of each family of martial arts and Gi-gong. Result : 1. Since Wang, the father of Daesung-Gwon had created Chamjang-gong, riding stance becomes a independent foam of Gi-gong 2. The essential method of riding stance is Relaxing the upper body, straightening the spine and putting stress on inner side of the legs. 3. Putting stress on inner legs help relaxing upper body. 4. Riding stance is very similar to horse-back riding. 5. Relaxation must be done for effective riding stance training. Conclusions : Riding stance is necessary for stressful modern people.
