This study was performed to characterize stormwater runoff of pollution material from nonpoint sources during rainfall in drainage basins of Hongjechun watershed, and to suggest management methods to control the first flush of nonpoint sources. We conducted 4 times of field surveys including 3 times of wet period and 1 times of dry period for 5 stations, which consist of 3 stations in main stream of Hongjechun and 1 station in tributaries of Sinyoungchun and Gukichun, respectively. The variation of pollutant concentrations in terms of BOD, COD, SS and TP was large depending on the flow rate of stormwater, while a little change of TN concentration was investigated. Depending on the rainfall event, the difference of flowrates, and runoff loadings was large, while the difference of those for dry wether period was not noticeable for various sub-basins. In the results of unit load calculation, the range of 153-277 kg/ha/yr for BOD, 222-422 kg/ha/yr for COD, 264-432 kg/ha/yr for SS, 40-70kg/ha/yr for TN, and 13-25 kg/ha/yr for TP was obtained for Hongjechun, Sinyoungchun, and Gukichun sub-basins. Compared with the previous studies, the result of this study was founded to be acceptable.
Growth in population and urbanization has progressively increased the loading of pollutants from nonpoint sources as well as point sources. Especially in case of road regions such as city trunk road, national road and highway are rainfall and pollutants runoff intensive landuses since they are impervious and emit a lot of pollutants from vehicle activity. This research was conducted to investigate the nonpoint sources concentration and quantifying stormwater pollutants which are contained in rainfall runoff water. Three different monitoring sites in Jinju and Changwon city were equipped with an automatic rainfall gauge and flow meter for measuring rainfall and the volume of rainfall runoff. In the case of average EMC value, city trunk road was shown the highest value in target water quality items like as BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP. Or the amount of runoff loads by water quality items showed the highest value in city trunk road. And runoff load in city trunk road was 43.8 times high value compared to highway by value of city trunk road $356.7 mg/m^2$, highway $8.150 mg/m^2$, national road $19.99 mg/m^2$ in the case of BOD.
This study analyzed the characteristics of stormwater runoff by rainfall type in orchard areas for two years. Effluents were monitored to calculate the EMCs and runoff loads of each pollutant. The runoff characteristics for nonpoint sources from vineyards were also inspected based on independent variables that affect runoff such as rainfall and rainfall intensity. The average runoff loads of each pollutant from vineyard_A and vineyard_B were found as follows: BOD 39.13 mg/$m^2$, COD 112.13 mg/$m^2$, TOC 54.98 mg/$m^2$, SS 1,681.8 mg/$m^2$, TN 18.29 mg/$m^2$, and TP 4.06 mg/$m^2$, which indicates that the COD's runoff load was especially high. The average EMCs from vineyard_A and vineyard_B, which represents the quality of rainfall effluent, were also analyzed: BOD 3.5 mg/L, COD 11.5 mg/L, TOC 5.2 mg/L, SS 211.7 mg/L, TN 1.774 mg/L, and TP 0.324 mg/L. This suggested that the COD, as an indicator of organic pollutants, is high in terms of EMCs as well. As rainfall increased, the EMCs of BOD, COD, TOC and SS kept turning upward. At a point, however, the high rainfall brought about dilution effects and began to push down the EMCs. Higher rainfall intensities led to the increase in the EMCs that displays the convergence of rainfall. Low rainfall intensities also raised pollutant concentrations, although the concentrations themselves were slightly different among pollutants.
In environmental impact assessments for large urban development projects, the Korean government requires analysis of stormwater runoff before, during and after the projects. Though hydrological models are widely used to analyze and prepare for surface runoff during storm events, accuracy of the predicted results have been in question due to limited amount of field data for model calibrations. Intensive field measurements have been made for storm events between July 2015 and July 2016 at a sub-basin of the Gwanpyung-cheon, Daejeon, Republic of Korea using an automatic monitoring system and also additional manual measurements. Continuous precipitation and surface runoff data used for utilization of SWMM model to predict surface runoff during storm events with improved accuracy. The optimal values for Manning's roughness coefficient and values for depression storage were estimated for pervious and impervious surfaces using three representative infiltration methods; the Curve Number Methods, the Horton's Method and the Green-Ampt Methods. The results of the research is expected to be used more efficiently for urban development projects in Korea.

Non-point pollutants from surface runoff during rainfall exert adverse effects on urban river water quality management. In particular, the first flush effect during the initial phase of rainfall can deliver significant amounts of pollutant loads to surface waters with extremely high concentrations. In this study, a sustainable first flush effect management system was developed by using settling and filtration that require no additional power or chemicals. A pilot scale experiment has shown that the removal of total suspended solid (TSS), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) are in ranges of 84 - 95%, 31 - 46%, and 42 - 86%, respectively. An Integrated Stormwater Runoff Management System (ISTORMS) was also developed to efficiently manage the developed system by linking weather forecast, flow rate and water quality modeling of surface runoff and automatic monitoring systems in fields and in the system. This study can provide effective solutions for the management of urban river in terms of both quantity and quality.
Two planter boxes were monitored during their initial year of operation to be able to assess their stormwater runoff and pollutant reduction capabilities and investigate on the design factors affecting their performance. One of the planter boxes provided 85-100% runoff volume reduction for rainfall less than 15 mm and rainfall intensities lower than 5 mm/hr. This reduced to 50-64% during higher rainfall intensities and depths of up to 50 mm. Suspended solids, organics, nutrients, and heavy metals were satisfactorily removed at a range of 40-95%. The other planter box, however, did not produce outflow in all the events and allowed total capture of stormwater. The uncertainty regarding the fate of the runoff in that case required an investigation of the planter box's actual drainage and underground conditions which was deemed outside the scope of the study. Nonetheless, several design improvements and retrofits were suggested based on the provisions of current design guidelines to ensure that the hydraulic and water quality goals are achieved without potential damage to nearby structures. Moreover, continuous monitoring data is required to provide more accurate design evaluation and can serve as a guide in the construction of similar facilities in the future.
This study was investigated to characterize the stormwater runoff pollutant materials from the urban area mixed with industrial area. Almost the similar rainfall pattern is shown during the 5 years, and the yearly precipitation was 5.2~6.6 mm. The first flushing effect during the early-stage rainfall-run off was observed in some events. EMC ranges are 19.3~39.9 mg/L for BOD, 45.2~190 mg/L for CODcr, 67.2~351 mg/L for TSS, 3.6~10.3 mg/L for TN, 1.2~2.5 mg/L for TP. Heavy metal are not detected except Zn which is observed at only one event. The particle size was distributed to 10 ${\mu}m$ at the 3% weight volume and the 50% cumulative weight percent was shown at 12 ${\mu}m$.
Recently, due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization, a great number of infrastructure and population were concentrated in urban areas. These changes have resulted in unprecedent runoff characteristics in urban basins, and the increase in impermeable areas leads to the growth of the runoff and the peak flow rate. Although many cities have made a lot of efforts to check and expand the stormwater network, the flash flood or the local torrential rain caused a growing number of casualty and property damage. This study analyzed the stormwater passage rate in a target area using SWMM. By incorporating the flow quantity surpassing the storm sewer capacity, a 2D inland flooding analysis model was applied to route the inundated area and velocity.

Urbanization increases the impervious cover, which affects the discharge of stormwater runoff and non-point source pollutants to the waterbodies. In order to improve the water quality and restore the aqua-ecosystem, the Ministry of Environment (MOE), Korea MOE introduced the Low Impact Development(LID) techniques on development projects. Therefore, research was performed to develop the bioretention technology for managing the stormwater runoff from urban areas. The test-bed was established on 2013 up to evaluate the performance of pollutant and runoff reduction. A total of 11 storm events have been monitored from November 2013 to present. Even though the SA/CA (surface area of bioretention/catchment area) is approximately 2.2%, the facility shows high pollutant and runoff reduction during storm events by increasing retention and infiltration capacities. The bioretention shows a 100% total runoff reduction at 0mm < R < 10mm rainfall range and more than 90% of runoff reduction at a rainfall range of 10mm < R < 20mm. Due to runoff volume reduction, more than 90% of nonpoint source pollutant were also removed by the bioretention.

This study analyzed hydrological changes of stormwater runoff of Seolleung Jeongneung zone according to the application of LID system based on landscape Architectural technology. The results are as follows. First, when flooding occurred in Gwanghwamun in July 27, 2011, the maximum instantaneous rainfall amount was 183 mm/hr recorded at 10:00 on 27th for 10 minutes, and it was confirmed that rainfall intensity more than three times as high as the maximum rainfall of 57.5 mm/hr. Second, it is possible to control peak flow rate in the case of 1,500mm of soil thickness, so that it is possible to improve the vulnerability of flood damage in Seolleung and Jeongneung zone when applying the LID system. Third, in the berm height scenario, peak flow rate control was not controled in all depth level models, but the first stormwater runoff was delayed by 4 hours and 10 minutes compared to the soil thickness scenario. It was interpreted as a relatively important indicator the soil thickness for the initial stromwater runoff reduction and the berm height for the peak runoff. Through this, the systematic adaptation of landscape-friendly ecological factors within the cultural property protection zone could theoretically confirm the effects of flood disaster prevention.
