  • Beopjusa Gwaebultaeng (Large Buddhist Painting), designated as Treasure No. 1259, was painted in 1766 and featured Yeorae (Buddha) at the center in the style of a single figure. It is the longest existing buddhist painting and was created by Duhun, a painter who was representative of 18th century Korean artists. His other remaining work is Seokgayeorae Gwaebultaeng (1767) in Tongdosa Temple. Considering their same iconography, they are assumed to have used the same underdrawing. Duhun had a superb ability to maintain a consistent underdrawing, while most painters changed theirs within a year. The Beopjusa painting carries significance because it was not only painted earlier than the one in Tongdosa, but also indicates possible relevance to the royal family through its records. Beopjusa Temple is also the site of Seonhuigung Wondang, a shrine housing the spirit tablet of Lady Yi Youngbin, also known as Lady Seonhui. Having been built only a year before Beopjusa Gwaebultaeng was painted, it served as a basis for the presumption that it has a connection to the royal family. In particular, a group of unmarried women is noticeable in the record of Beopjusa painting. The names of some people, including Ms. Lee, born in the year of Gyengjin, are recorded on the Bonginsa Temple Building, the construction of which Lady Yi Youngbin and Princess Hwawan donated money to. In this regard, they are probably court ladies related to Lady Yi Youngbin. The connection of Beopjusa Gwaebultaeng with the royal family is also verified by a prayer at the bottom of the painting, reading "JusangJusamJeonhaSumanse (主上主三殿下壽萬歲, May the king live forever)." While looking into the historical characteristics of this art, this study took an approach based on scientific analysis. Damages to Beopjusa Gwaebultaeng include: bending, folding, wrinkles, stains due to moisture, pigment spalling, point-shaped pigment spalling, and pigment penetration to the lining paper at the back. According to the results of an analysis of the painting pigments, white lead was used as a white pigment, while an ink stick and indigo were used for black. For red, cinnabar and minium were used independently or were combined. For purple, organic pigments seem to have been used. For yellow, white lead and gamboge were mixed, or gamboge was painted over white lead, and gold foil was adopted for storage. As a green pigment, atacamite or a mixture of atacamite and malachite was used. Azurite and smalt were used separately or together as blue pigments.

  • This research explored the relationship between the water quality issue of Wolji Pond (Anapji Pond) with the maintenance of the channel flow circulation system. The water supply and drainage system closely related to the circulation system of pond has been reviewed, rather than the existing water supply and drainage system that has been analyzed in previous studies. As a result of reviewing the water supply system, it has been learned that the water supply system on the southeastern shore of Wolji Pond, being the current water supply hole, has been connected to the east side garden facility (landscaping stone, curved waterway, storage facility of water) between the north and south fence and the waterway. This separate facility group seems to have been a subject of the investigation of the eastern side of Wolji Pond, with the landscaping stones having been identified in the 1920's survey drawings. The water supply facility on the southeastern shore, being the suspected water supply hole, seems to have some connection with the granite waterway remaining on the building site of Imhaejeon (臨海殿) on the southern side of Wolji Pond. It is inferred that it provides clean water, seeing that the slope towards the southwestern shore of Wolji Pond becomes lower, the landscaping stones have been placed in the filter area, and it is present in the 1920's survey drawings and the water supply hole survey drawing of 1975. The water drainage facility on the northern shore is composed of five stages. The functions of the wooden waterway and the rectangular stone water catchment facility seem not to be only for the water drainage of Wolji Pond. In light of the points that there are wood plugs in the wooden waterway and that there is a water catchment facility in the final stage, it is judged that the water of Balcheon Stream (撥川) may be charged in reverse according to this setup. Namely, the water could enter and exit in either direction in the water drainage facility on the northern shore It also seems that the supply to the wooden waterway could be opened and shut through the water catchment facility of rectangular stone group as well. The water drainage facility on the western shore is very similar to the water drainage facility on the northern shore, so it is difficult to avoid the belief that it existed during the Silla Dynasty, or it has been produced by imitating the water drainage facility on the northern shore at some future point in time. It seems to have functioned as the water drainage facility for the supply of agricultural water during the Joseon Dynasty. The water supply and drainage facilities in Wolji Pond have been understood as a systematized distribution network that has been intertwined organically with the facility of Donggung Palace, which was the center of the Silla capital. Water has been supplied to each facility group, including Wolji Pond, through this structure; it includes the drainage system connecting to the Namcheon River (南川) through the Balcheon Stream, which was an important canal of the capital center.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of 0.1% chitosan-ascorbate (CA) prepared with different molecular weight (223, 746, 1,110 and 2,025 kDa) of chitosan on the changes in antioxidant activity of mul-kimchi during storage at $10^{\circ}C$ for 20 days. Animal experiments were divided to 5 groups; normal control group (NC), high cholesterol diet group (HC), high cholesterol diet mul-kimchi diet group (HCKC), high cholesterol diet and CA2025 containing mul-kimchi administrated group (HCCA), and high cholesterol diet and 1/2 concentrated CA containing mul-kimchi administrated group (HC2CA). Mul-kimchi juice was administered 0.5 mL per 100 g body weight once a day and fed for 5 weeks. Electron donating activity of the 20 days-stored mul-kimchi with 0.1% CA showed higher activity (84.74~89.13%) than those of control and ascorbic acid mul-kimchi (35.04 and 75.04%). Superoxide dismutase activities of the kimchijuice with CA were higher in the higher molecular of chitosan. In the animal experiments, the average body weight of the HCCA and HC2CA group were lower 6.9% and 8.4% than that of HC control group, respectively. Hepatic glutathione content in HCCA and HC2CA group was increased 22.5% and 9.1% as compared to HC group. Hepatic glutathione S-transferase activities were significantly increased in the HCCA (219.9%) and HC2CA group (153.8%) compared to NC group. Hepatic superoxide dismutase activity was highest in the HCCA group, and the activities in CA groups were higher than those of NC and HC group.

  • Probiotic, prebiotic, and synbiotic substances as well as microorganisms were added to infant formula in an attempt to influence the intestinal microflora with an aim to stimulate the growth of lactic acid bacteria, especially bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Over the last 10 years, new synbiotic infant formulas containing probiotics and prebiotics have been proposed in order to simulate the effect of breast-feeding on the intestinal microflora. Owing to their synergistic effect, the new synbiotics are expected to be more helpful than using probiotics and prebiotics individually. Maintenance of the viability of the probiotics during food processing and the passage through the gastrointestinal tract should be the most important consideration, since a sufficient number of bacteria ($10^8cfu/g$) should reach the intended location to have a positive effect on the host. Storage conditions and the processing technology used for the manufacture of products such as infant formula adversely affect the viability of the probiotics. When an appropriate and cost-effective microencapsulation methodology using the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status and substances with high biological value are developed, the quality of infant formulas would improve. The effect of probiotics may be called a double-effect, where one is an immunomodulatory effect, induced by live probiotics that advantageously alter the gastrointestinal microflora, and the other comprises anti-inflammatory responses elicited by dead cells. At present, a new terminology is required to define the dead microorganisms or crude microbial fractions that positively affect health. The term "paraprobiotics" (or ghost probiotics) has been proposed to define dead microbial cells (not damaged or broken) or crude cell extracts (i.e., cell extracts with complex chemical composition) that are beneficial to humans and animals when a sufficient amount is orally or topically administered. The fecal microflora of bottle-fed infants is altered when the milk-based infant formula is supplemented with probiotics or prebiotics. Thus, by increasing the proportion of beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, prebiotics modify the fecal microbial composition and accordingly regulate the activity of the immune system. Therefore, considerable attention has been focused on the improvement of infant formula quality such that its beneficial effects are comparable to those of human milk, using prebiotics such as inulin and oligosaccharides and potential specific probiotics such as bifidobacteria, which selectively stimulate the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the microflora and the indigenous intestinal metabolic activity of the microflora.

  • The effects of defatted soy flour on the physicochemical characteristics of dough and bread making properties were studied. Defatted soy flour is added to wheat flour for bread-making in order to maximize the use of isoflavones in the soybean. Different particle sizes of both defatted soy flour and wheat flour were prepared by grinding and sievingwith meshes. In the mixograph test, the addition of defatted soy flour to wheat flour increased the requirement for water and decreased the dough development time. Water absorption rates were also investigated to determine the optimum quantity of water for good dough. As the level of defatted soy flour mixed with wheat flour increased, the sedimentation and P.K. values decreased. In comparison with control, the bread made with defatted soy flour especially had a lower specific loaf volume. Specific loaf volume of wheat flour-defatted soy flour bread prepared (Ed- this is an incomplete sentence, it's only a subject clause, and I don't how what you intend to state). In terms of the staling rate and hardness of the wheat flour-defatted soy flour bread, the increased defatted soy flour had a faster staling rate during storage at 5? than at 25? for 5days. From the result of sensory evaluation, wheat flour-defatted soy flour breads containing up to $4\%$ defatted soy flour were rated as being of high quality.

  • The effects of initial conditions and input values of the rainfall-runoff model were studied in the applications of a lumped concept model for flood event data extension. For the initial conditions of the rainfall-runoff model, baseflow effects and spatial distributions of saturation points ($R_{sa}$) for the storage function methods (SFM) were analyzed. In addition, researches on the effects of rainfall data conditions as input values for the rainfall-runoff model were performed. The Chungju Dam watershed was selected and divided into 3 catchments including smaller size of 22 sub-catchments. The observed discharge and inflow amounts at Yeongwol 1, Chungju Dam, and Yeongwol 2 water level stations were individually operated as criteria for flood data extension in 30 flood events from 1993 to 2009. Direct and base flow were distinguished from a stream flow. In order to test capability of flood data extension, obtained base flow was applied to the rainfall-runoff model for three water level stations. When base flow was adopted in the model, the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE) was increased. The numbers of over satisfaction for model performance (>0.5) were increased over 10%. Saturation points ($R_{sa}$) which strongly influence the runoff amount when rainfall starts were optimized based on the runoff amount at three water level stations. The sizes of saturation points for three locations were similar which means saturation point size is not depending on the runoff amount. The effects of rainfall information for flood runoff were tested at 2002ev1 and 2008ev1. When increased the amount of rainfall information, the runoff simulations were closer to the simulations with full of rainfall information. However, the size of improvement was not substantial on rainfall-runoff simulations in terms of the size of total amount of rainfall.

  • 1) The authors studied the effect of increasing age on the contraction and relaxation mechanism in the ureteral smooth muscle of the guinea pig. 2) Two to three week old, three month old, and two to three year old guinea pig ureters were used and the consistent amplitude of contratile responses were induced by using train stimulation. 3) After mounting the specimens in Tyrode's solution containing 2.6mM $Ca^{++}$, the ureter was stimulated, of which amplitude was initial contraction and next continuously superfused with $Ca^{++}$-free Tyrod's solution. When the contractile response stopped by electrical field stimulation, the muscle specimens was superfused with Tyrode's solution 0.25mM $Ca^{++}$ for 15min and stimulated with the same parameters. Thereafter, the contraction of $Ca^{++}$ in the solution was increased step by step up to 2.7mM. 4) The ureters of 2-3 week old guinea pigs needed less $Ca^{++}$ for the recovery of contractile response than those of three month and two to three year old did. In 2.7mM $Ca^{++}$, the ureters of 2-3 week and 3 month old guinea pigs recovered the contractile response of over 90% but those of 2-3 year old recovered the contractility of 77.2%. 5) Isoproterenol inhibited in dose dependent manner from $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-5}\;M$ ureteral contractility of both 2-3 week and 2-3 year old guinea pigs. The inhibition of the old ureter by isoproterenol was significantly less (P<0.025) than that of the younger ureter. However theophylline showed the strong inhibition independent of the function of age. 6) Dibutyryl cyclic AMP showed dose-dependent inhibition of the contraction of ureters of 2-3 week old guinea pigs but there was shown no inhibition in the old ureters. Further, the content of endogenous cyclic AMP in the two week old ureter was higher by 73% than that of 17 month old ureter. Cyclic GMP contents was not much different between two groups. 7) The ureteral smooth muscle of the younger guinea pig had more efficiency than that of the older animals in the mobilization and storage of calcium which concerned itself in the contraction and relaxation mechanism.

  • High pressure processing (HPP) is a non-thermal method used to prevent bacterial growth in the food industry. Currently, pasteurization is the most common method in use for most milk processing, but this has the disadvantage that it leads to changes in the milk's nutritional and chemical properties. Therefore, the effects of HPP treatment on the microbiological and chemical properties of milk were investigated in this study. With the treatment of HPP at 600 MPa and $15^{\circ}C$ for 3 min, the quantity of microorganisms and lactic acid bacteria were reduced to the level of 2-3 log CFU/ml, and coliforms were not detected during a storage period of 15 d at $4^{\circ}C$. An analysis of milk proteins, such as ${\alpha}$-casein, ${\beta}$-casein, ${\kappa}$-casein, ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin, ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin by on-chip electorophoresis revealed that the electrophoretic pattern of the proteins from HPP-treated milk was different from that of conventionally treated commercial milk. While the quantities of vitamins and minerals in HPP-treated milk were seen to be comparable to amounts found in raw milk, the enzyme activity of lipase, protease and alkaline phosphatase after HPP treatment was reduced. These results suggest that HPP treatment is a viable method for the control of undesirable microorganisms in milk, allowing for minimal nutritional and chemical changes in the milk during the process.

  • This study was undertaken to clarify the effect of killing methods on physical and rheological changes of plaice, Paralichthys olivaceus muscle at early period after death. Plaices killed by the four different methods(1. spiking at the brain instantly. 2. drowning in air. 3. dipping in 1,000ppm ethylaminobenzoate dissolved sea water as an anesthetic. 4. electrifying in sea water.) were stored at $5^{\circ}C$, and the rigor-index and breaking strength through storage were monitored. The longest onset time of rigor-mortis and full rigor was in the samples killed by dipping in sea water with dissolved anesthetic among all samples, where rigor-mortis began at 20hrs after killing and maximum tension was attained after 56hrs. However, in the cases of plaice electrified in sea water or drowned in air, the onset of rigor-mortis began just after killing and maximum tensions were attained after 9hrs and 13hrs, respectively. The level of breaking strength in the muscle of fish killed by spiking the brain instantly was $950.30{\pm}50.23g$, immediately after killing. The value and time reached around the maximum breaking strength for each of the samples were $1,230.60{\pm}30.32g$ and Ohr (immediately after killing) for samples killed by electrifying in sea water, $1,235.83{\pm}35.37g$ and 2.5hrs for drowning samples, $1,186.29{\pm}55.90g$ and 10hrs for spiking samples, and $1,189.67{\pm}50.32g$ and 15hrs for samples dipped in anesthetic, respectively. From the results above, it could be concluded that electrification in sea water is the most effective method in accelerating rigor-mortis and shortening times of reaching the maximum breaking strength of fresh plaice flesh of all the killing methods at early periods after death, whereas dipping in sea water treated with anesthetic was the most effective way in delaying those changes.
