Global warming causes the climate change and makes severe damage to ecosystem and civilization Carbon dioxide greatly contributes to global warming, thus many studies have been conducted to estimate the forest biomass carbon stock as an important carbon storage. However, more studies are required for the selection and use of technique and remotely sensed data suitable for the carbon stock estimation in Korea In this study, the aboveground forest biomass carbon stocks of Danyang-Gun in South Korea was estimated using $k$NN($k$-Nearest Neighbor) algorithm and regression model, then the results were compared. The Landsat TM and 5th NFI(National Forest Inventory) data were prepared, and ratio images, which are effective in topographic effect correction and distinction of forest biomass, were also used. Consequently, it was found that $k$NN algorithm was better than regression model to estimate the forest carbon stocks in Danyang-Gun, and there was no significant improvement in terms of accuracy for the use of ratio images.
In this work, an experimental study of the gasification on wood was carried out in downdraft type fixed bed Gasifier attached with 10 kW duel fuel diesel engine. The main objective of the study was to use wood as the biomass fuel for downdraft Gasifier and to evaluate the operating parameter of gasifier unit to predict its performance in terms of gas yield and cold gas efficiency. The influence of different biomass on fuel consumption rate, gas yield and cold gas efficiency was studied. Composition of producer gas was also detected for measuring the lower heating value of producer gas to select the feed stock so that optimum performance in the existing gasifier unit can be achieved. Under the experimental conditions, Lower heating value, of producer gas, cold gas efficiency and gas yields, using wood as a feed stock, are $4.85MJ/m^3$, 46.57% and $0.519m^3/kg$.

Yield per recruit model is the most popular method for fisheries stock assessment. However, stock assessment using yield per recruit model can lead to recruitment overfishing as this model only considers the maximum yield per recruit without spawning biomass for reproduction. For this reason, spawning biomass per recruit model which reveals variations of spawning stock biomass per fishing mortality (F) and age at first capture ($t_c$) is considered as more proper method for stock assessment. There are mainly two methods for spawning biomass per recruit model known as age specific selectivity method and knife-edged selectivity method. In the knife-edged selectivity method, the spawning biomass per recruit has been often calculated using biomass per recruit value by multiplying the maturity ratio of the recruited age. But the maturity ratio in the previous method was not considered properly in previous studies. Therefore, a new method of the knife-edged selectivity model was suggested in this study using a weighted average of the maturity ratio for ages from the first capture to the lifespan. The optimum fishing mortality in terms of $F_{35%}$ which was obtained from the new method was compared to the old method for small yellow croaker stock in Korea. The value of $F_{35%}$ using the new knife-edged selectivity model was 0.302/year and the value using the old model was 0.349/year. However, the value of $F_{35%}$ using the age specific selectivity model was estimated as 0.320/year which was closer to the value from the new knife-edged selectivity model.

The loss and degradation in tropical forest region are some of the current global concern. Hence, these issues elevated the role of rehabilitated forests in providing ecological products and services. The information on the carbon stock is important in relation to global carbon and biomass use, but lacking from the tropical region. This paper reports the assessment of tree and soil carbon stock in a chronosequence rehabilitated tropical forest stands in Malaysia. The study site was at the UPM-Mitsubishi Forest Rehabilitation Project, UPMKB. $20{\times}20m$ plot was established each and assessed in 2009 at 1-, 10- and 19-year-old sites while an adjacent ${\pm}23-year-old$ natural regenerating secondary forest plot was established for comparison. The overall total carbon stock was in the order of 19-year-old>${\pm}23-year-old$>10-year-old>1-year-old. When forest carbon stock is low, the soil component plays an important role in the carbon storage. The forest carbon recovery is crucial to increase soil carbon stock. The variations in the carbon stock showed the different stages of the forest recovery. Species survived after 19-years of planting are potential species for carbon sequestration activities in rehabilitated forest. Human intervention in rehabilitating degraded forest areas through tree planting initiatives is crucial towards recovering the forest ecological role especially in forest carbon stock capacity.
Total forest growing stock and growing stock per ha in Korea are $470\times10^6m^3\;and\;73m^3$, respectively. Those figures mean that forest growing stock was increased 4.7 times more during last 30 years. The annual production of forest biomass comes from forest tending executed by Korea Forest Service was estimated about $1.07\times10^6m^3$ M/T, which was equivalent to $0.45\%$ of total imported crude oil of Korea at 2002. The production is expected to increase and reach up to $1.9\times10^6 M/T$ till 2008. The analysis of economic feasibility showed that the production cost of wood chip(134,786Won/T) was about 30,389 Won/T higher than heat value of wood chip, 104,397 Won/T estimated from that of kerosene. For the promotion of forest bioenergy utilization, more efforts need to be given for the education and public relations to induce publicity a willingness-to-pay for the environment friendly fuels under the good understanding for the use of bioenergy. In addition, we need to provide a community-based biomass utilization program by region to allocate the role of each participant and to increase the profitability of bioenergy.
Quantification of Carbon stock has become in the contest of changing climate and mitigation potential of forests. Two different forest types, Dry Shiwalik Sal Forest and Moist Shiwalik Sal Forest in Barkot and Lachchiwala of Doon Valley, Western Himalaya are selected for the study. Volume equations, destructive sampling and laboratory analysis are done to estimate the carbon stock in different carbon pools like trees, shrubs, herbs and soils. Considerable variations are observed in terms of carbon stocks in different forest types. In Dry Shiwalik Sal Forest, carbon stock density varied between 129.81 and $136.00MgCha^{-1}$ while in Moist Shiwalik Sal Forest, carbon stock density ranged from 222.29 to $271.67MgCha^{-1}$. Tree species like Shorea robusta, Syzigium cumini, Miliusa velutina, Acacia catechu, and Mallotus philippensis had significant role in carbon sequestration. Shorea robusta had contributed highest in carbon stock due to highest density. Total of 2,338,280.165 Mg carbon stock was estimated in all the forest types.

This study was performed to assess the current stock condition of elkhorn sculpin along the Uljin area in the East Sea of Korea. To assess the state of the stock, yield-per-recruit (YPR) and spawning biomass-perrecruit (SBPR) analyses were performed. Estimates of $F_{max}$ and $F_{0.1}$ were 2.10/year and 0.48/year, respectively, and those of $F_{35%}$ and $F_{40%}$ were 0.66/year and 0.54/year, respectively. Current fishing mortality was estimated at 0.63/year and the current age at first capture was 2.41years. $F_{40%}$ was set as the target reference point of the stock. SBPR at $F_{40%}$ and current SBPR were estimated to be 41.85g and 37.77g, respectively. Estimated FOTY which is the fishing mortality for the overfished threshold yield was 0.49/year. The ratio of SBPR/$SBPR_{MSY}$ was calculated as 0.90 and that of $F/F_{OTY}$ was 1.05. The ratio of $t_c/t_{c\;opt}$ was calculated as 1.15 and that of $F/F_{OTY}$ was 1.17. Therefore, the current stock condition of elkhorn sculpin along the Uljin area of Korea has not been overfished, however, it indicates that a light overfishing is going on this stock.
Tropical dry forests are one of the most threatened, widely distributed ecosystems in tropics and estimation of forest biomass is a crucial component of global carbon emission estimation. Therefore, the present study was aimed to quantify the biomass and carbon storage in trees on large scale (10, 1 ha plots) in the dry mixed evergreen forest of Javadhu forest of Eastern Ghats. Biomass of adult (≥10 cm DBH) trees was estimated by non-harvest methods. The total biomass of trees in this tropical dry mixed evergreen forest was ranged from 160.02 to 250.8 Mg/ha, with a mean of 202.04±24.64 Mg/ha. Among the 62 tree species enumerated, Memecylon umbellatum accumulated greater biomass and carbon stocks (24.29%) more than the other species in the 10 ha study plots. ANOVA revealed that there existed a significant variation in the total biomass and carbon stock among the three plant types (Evergreen, brevi-deciduous and deciduous (F (2, 17)=15.343, p<0.001). Basal area and density was significant positively correlated with aboveground biomass (R2 0.980; 0.680) while species richness exhibited negative correlation with above ground biomass (R2 0.167). Finding of present study may be interpreted as most of the trees in this forest are yet to be matured and there is a net addition to standing biomass leading to carbon storage.

Estimation of biomass carbon stock is an important research for estimation of public benefit of forest. Previous studies about biomass carbon stock estimation have limitations, which come from the used deterministic models. The most serious problem of deterministic models is that deterministic models do not provide any explanation about the relevant effects of errors. In this study, the effects of location errors were analyzed in order to estimation of biomass carbon stock of Danyang area using Monte Carlo simulation method. More specifically, the k-Nearest Neighbor(kNN) algorithm was used for basic estimation. In this procedure, random and systematic errors were added on the location of Sample plot, and effects on estimation error were analyzed by checking the changes of RMSE. As a result of random error simulation, mean RMSE of estimation was increased from 24.8 tonC/ha to 26 tonC/ha when 0.5~1 pixel location errors were added. However, mean RMSE was converged after the location errors were added 0.8 pixel, because of characteristic of study site. In case of the systematic error simulation, any significant trends of RMSE were not detected in the test data.
A study on the estimation of the stock density and biomass of Perinereis aibuhitensis in the tidal zone in Sosan, Chungchongnam-do, Korea was carried out from June to July 1988. A preliminary survey was conducted to determine the distribution pattern of the species and the optimum sample size for setting up the sampling design. The stock densities of the species by stratum and by subarea were estimated using the stratified random sampling method, based upon the results of preliminary survey. The differences in density between strata as well as among subareas were tested to decide whether they can be combined together for estimating the overall stock biomass or not. The results of the survey showed that p. aibuhitensis were randomly distributed(Poisson distribution) and the number of quadrats which satisfies a reasonable level of precision was determined to be five by stratum. The densities between strata were not significantly different, while densities among subareas were different. Subarea C showed the highest density with the mean of $53.9g/m^2$ and followed by subarea B. The density of subarea A was the lowest with the mean of $18.2g/m^2$. The overall mean density from the study area was $32.4g/m^2$ with the coefficient of variance(CV) of $6.8\%$ The overall stock biomass was estimated to be 147.5mt in this area.
