The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the volatility spillovers from global economic policy uncertainty and macroeconomic factors to the Islamic stock market returns. The study focuses on the Islamic stock indices of emerging economies including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Turkey. The Macroeconomic factors are industrial production, consumer price index, exchange rate. EGARCH model is employed for investigation of volatility spillovers. The results show that the global economic policy uncertainty has a significant spillover effect only on the returns of Turkish Islamic stock index. Similarly, the shocks in macroeconomic factors have little influence on the volatility of Islamic indices returns. The volatility of Indonesian and the Turkish Islamic stock indices returns is not influenced from the fluctuations in macroeconomic factors. However, there is significant volatility spillover only from industrial production to the returns of Malaysian Islamic index. The results suggest that the Islamic stock markets are less likely to influence from the global economic policies and macroeconomic factors. The stability of Islamic stocks provide opportunity for diversification of portfolios, particularly in stressed market conditions. The major price factors of Islamic markets could be firms' specific factors or investors' behaviors. The findings are helpful for policy makers and investors in formulating policies and portfolios.
This article examines the distributional characteristics of the return of Chinese stock market indices. The majority of previous empirical researches have tended to focus upon the simple stock market index. However, this study focuses on the four indices which represent the characteristics of each stock market index. The empirical findings indicate that the returns of the four chinese indices are not normally distributed at conventional levels. The Ljimg-Box -statistics indicate the returns of the index of A shares are not serially autocorrelated. However, the returns of the index of B shares are serially autocorrelated. The empirical findings also indicate returns of the four chinese indices are not serially autocorrelated. The statistics of Regression Specification Error Test and ARCH indicate the returns of all four indices are not serially linear. The findings also indicate that E- GARCH model is the most fittest model for the returns of the four chinese indices and the forecast error can be reduced by using student t distribution rather normal distribution.

This study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets of sixteen countries. Pooled OLS regression, conventional t-test and Mann-Whitney test are used to estimate the results of the study. We construct a weekly panel data of COVID-19 new cases and stock returns. Pooled OLS estimation result shows that the growth rate of weekly new cases of COVID-19 negatively predicts the return in stock market. Next, the returns on leading stock indices of these countries during the COVID-19 outbreak period are compared with returns during the non-COVID period. We use a t-test and Mann-Whitney test to compare the returns. The results reveal that investors in these countries do not react to the media news of COVID-19 at the early stage of the pandemic. However, once the human-to-human transmissibility had been confirmed, all of the stock market indices negatively reacted to the news in the short- and long-event window. Interestingly, we noticed that the Shanghai Composite Index, which was severely affected during the short-event window, bounced back during the long-event window. This indicates that the Chinese government's drastic measures to contain the spread of the pandemic regained the confidence of investors in the Shanghai Stock Market.
This study is an empirical research of the stock markets to prove the synchronization phenomenon of the world economy. For this research I analyzed Korea's KOSPI, USA's DOW & NASDAQ reflecting stock markets in North America, Japan's NIKKEI in Asia, and Germany's DAX in Europe. Because the raw series are not stationary, they are to be transformed to returns series. The results of the study are follows: First of all, there are significant causalities between KOSPI's returns and those of other indices. Second, feedback effects are found between the market returns with several time lags. Third, there are 4 cointegrating equations which embody the relation of the five returns series. And forth, KOSPI reacts more sensitively to impacts from the foreign indices compared to the other indices do when they got impacts from each other except KOSPI. On conclusion, there exists a clear evidence for the synchronization phenomenon in returns of the stock indices, and we can expect Korea market may get similar changes depending on the economic changes of North America, Europe, or Asia. Therefore more closing researches should be conducted about the world economy synchronization in various fields as soon as possible.
The volatility in the stock market responds differently to information types. That is, the asymmetric volatility exists in the stock market which responds more to unexpected negative returns due to bad news than unexpected positive returns due to good news. This paper examines the asymmetric response of the volatility of KOSPI, large-cap, middle-cap, and small-cap indices returns which is announced in Korea exchange (KRX) by using the MA-GJR model and the MA-EGARCH model. According to empirical analyses, it shows that the asymmetric response of volatility exists in all indices regardless of volatility estimation models and the degree of the asymmetric volatility response of the small-cap index returns is greater than that of the large-cap index returns. Moreover, this results also observed robustly during the period of both before and after the global financial crisis.

Foreign investors'shares and their influences on the Korean stock market have never been larger and greater before since the market was completely open to foreign investors in 1992 Quantitatively and qualitatively as well, as a result, changes in the patterns of foreign investments have caused enormous effects on the interactions of major macroeconomic indices of the Korean economy. This paper is intended to investigate the causal relations of the four variables, foreigners'buy-sell ratios, stock returns, ₩/$ exchange rates and $\yen$/$ exchange rates, over the two time periods of the pre-IMF (1996.1.1-1997.8.15) and the post-IMF (1997.8.16-2000.6.15) based on the daily data of the variables. Granger Causality Test, Forecast Error Variance Decomposition(FEVD) using VAR model and Impulse Response Function were implemented for the empirical analysis.

This study investigates daily stock market anomalies in Chinese stock market, using nine most representative stock indices over an eleven year time period spanning from pre-financial crisis era to six years into the financial crisis. This research is the first to test the presence of the day of the week effect on stock returns in the Chinese stock exchanges during the financial crisis. We find that the day of week effects have been strongly significant in Chinese stock exchanges since 2004. However, unlike the previously found negative Monday effect and positive Friday effect in the U.S., Chinese stock market shows positive returns on Mondays and negative returns on Tuesdays. More importantly, the negative Tuesday effect is only significant after the inception of financial crisis. The results indicate a positive effect on Mondays and a negative effect on Thursdays. More importantly, we find a negative Tuesday effect during the financial crisis, which suggests a spillover of the Monday effect from the U.S. stock market. Our results shed some light on the degree of market efficiency in the largest emerging capital market in the world, and its increasingly close relationship with the U.S. capital market.
Purpose - The paper tested the relationship between the stock markets of the Middle East and the USA with the oil price and US dollar index as threshold variables. Research design, data, and methodology - The stock price indices of the USA, the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Jordan), WTI spot crude oil price, and US dollar index were daily returns in the research period from May 21, 2001 to August 9, 2012. Following Hansen (1999), the panel threshold regression model was used. Results - With the US dollar index as the threshold variable, a negative relationship existed between the stock price indices of Jordan and the USA but no significant result was found between the stock price indices of Abu Dhabi and the USA. Conclusions - The USA is an economic power today:even if it has a closer relationship with the US stock market, the dynamic US economy can learn about subsequent developments and plan in advance. Conversely, if it has an estranged relationship with the US stock market, thinking in a different direction and different investment strategies will achieve good results.

This paper employs dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) model to examine time-varying comovement in the Korean stock market with a focus on the financial industry. Analyzing the daily returns of KOSPI 200 eight sector indices from January 2008 to December 2013, we find that stock market correlations significantly increased during the GFC period. The Financial Sector had the highest correlation between the Constructions-Machinery Sector; however, the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors indicated a relatively lower correlation between the Financial Sector. In terms of model fitting, the DCC with t distribution model concludes as the best among the four alternatives based on BIC, and the estimated shape parameter of t distribution is less than 10, implicating a strong tail dependence between the sectors. We report little asymmetric effect in correlation dynamics between sectors; however, we find strong asymmetric effect in volatility dynamics for each sector return.

Predicting return and volatility in the global Capital Market during a pandemic is challenging, and it is more difficult for a specific sector, particularly if that sector has a positive outlook. The goal of this research is to look at the impact of COVID-19 on the mean and volatility of the Information Technology Indexes of the best nine technology-driven countries based on return performance using an econometric GARCH model that is widely used. The daily returns of information technology indexes are evaluated for the same from November 2018 to February 2021. Data is taken from Yahoo Finance for CAC Tech (France), DAX Tech (Germany), FTSE All Tech (UK), KOPSI 200 IT (Korea), NIFTY IT (India), S&P 500 IT (US), S&P TSX (Canada), SSE_IT (China) and TOPIX17 (Japan). The results show daily positive mean returns for 8 countries' IT Indices and further, an uptrend in mean daily returns is observed in the crisis period for 6 countries' IT Indices. The exogenous variable COVID-19 which was taken as a regressor for the GARCH model was found to be positively significant for IT indices of all the countries. The overall results confirm the presence of the mean-reverting phenomenon for IT indices of all the countries.
