Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene is known to be expressed in plants, and is involved in the differentiation, growth and synthesis of secondary metabolites. However, its expression in fungi remains to be explored. To understand its expression in mushroom fungi, the PAL gene of the edible mushroom Flammulina velutipes (Fvpal) was cloned and characterized. The cloned Fvpal consists of 2,175 bp, coding for a polypeptide containing 724 amino acids and having 11 introns. The translated amino acid sequence of Fvpal shares a high identity (66%) with that of ectomycorrhizal fungus Tricholoma matsutake. Distinctively, the Fvpal expression in the mycelium was higher in minimal medium supplemented with L-tyrosine than with other aromatic amino acids. During cultivation of the mushroom on sawdust medium, Fvpal expression in the fruit body correspondingly increased as the mushroom grew. In the fruiting body, Fvpal was expressed more in the stipe than in the pileus. These results suggest that F. velutipes PAL activity differs in the different organs of the mushroom. Overall, this is first report to show that the PAL gene expression is associated with mushroom growth in fungi.
The morphological and ecological characteristics of Russula eburneoareolata Hongo is reported first time in Korea. The fungus was collected from the mixed forest of Fagaceae in the Gyeryongsan Mountain National Park. The pileus is champagne to ivory, convex then expanded and depressed in the center afterward, and 4 to 9 cm broad. Stipe is 3 to 6 cm long, 12 to 20mm thick and tapering below. Spores are $7-8{\times}6-7\;{\mu}m$, subspherical oval and warty with some connecting lines. Basidia are about $35-40{\times}10-11\;{\mu}m$ and four-spore bearing type.
A new virus with a dsRNA genome was isolated and characterized from the Suhan-:neutari strain (ASI 2504) of Pleurotus ostreatus, which was characterized as long and slightly bent with small caps on the stipe of fruit body. Thirty nm isometric viruses with three dsRNA segments (approximately 2.0, 1.84 and 1.82 kb in sizes) were isolated by ultracentrifugation in sucrose gradients. Western analysis of protein extracted purified viruses with anti-virus polyclonal antibody confirmed that viruses have two specific proteins (36 and 68 kDa). Computer analysis of 2.0 kb segment shows that high. sequence identity with RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of partitiviruses, respectively. When compared to other dsRNA mycoviruses in a phylogenetic analysis, OMDV was most related to Pleurotus ostreatus virus 1.

Since development of the first Korean button mushroom cultivar 'Sae-Ah' in 2010, mushroom farmers have demanded an improved cultivar. Although a new cultivar, 'Saejeong', was developed in 2011, this cultivar has thus far been difficult to cultivate in typical mushroom farms. To solve this problem, another new cultivar, 'Saedo', was developed in 2012. This new cultivar was selected by genetic analysis from crossing the heterokaryon line A175 and the homokaryon line ASI1346-15. The heterokaryon A175 was a crossed line between strains ASI1038-211 and ASI1346-20. The mycelium of 'Saedo' showed good growth on compost dextrose agar at $25^{\circ}C$. The morphological traits such as the pileus (cap) and stipe of the 'Saedo' cultivar were thicker than those of the reference control 'Saejeong', and the production yield was increased by 1.89-fold compared to that of the reference control. A field experiment of the 'Saedo' cultivar has been ongoing since 2013. The yield of the 'Saedo' cultivar was found to be substantially higher than that of the reference control during the $2^{nd}$ flush.
The soil microfungal flora of the paddy fields in Korea was investigated at four different seasons. The fungi were isolated by the dilution plate method from soil samples of two selected sites around Seoul. A total of 85 isolates was obtained as pure cultures and 30 species 13 genera were identified and 11 isolates were unidentified. Among these, 6 species of Deuteromycetous fungi, Penicillium spp., were found to be dominant in paddy field soils. Penicillium funiculosum, P. piceum, P. roqueforti and P. verruculosum were described as new to Korea. P. piceum has remarkable characteristics of the typical columnar head similar to a compact spruce-like evergreen tree. P. requeforti has penicilli variable in pattern with compactly branched metulae and appressed or Paecilomyces variotii were also described. In addition, Zygorhynchus moelleri, a remarkably dominant Zygomycete in Korean paddy soils, produces subglobose sporangia with oval columella and dark colored zygospores of about $35\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter.
The present investigations were carried out with the purpose of making clear the fundamental features of the seasonal variations in chemical composition of the brown algae. Three species of samples, Ecklonia cava, Sargassum sagamianum and Hizikia fusiforme have been analyzed monthly for their contents of total ash, crude protein, alginic acid, mannitol, and laminarin over a year period. Three kinds of samples were collected from the same locality, situated on the southern coast of the Che-ju Island, from September 1966 to August 1967. In addition, the comparative analysis was made on fronds and stipes of the plant for their chemical composition. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1, In general, the three species examined underwent a similar mode of seasonal variation, and no essential difference was detected among them. 2. The chemical composition of the plant exhibited a considerable difference between the species. The content of total ash in H. fusiforme was remarkably higher than those in the two other species respectively. The alginic acid content was relatively high in S. sagamianum and low in H. fusiforme. The contents of crude protein, mannitol and laminarin were appreciably high in E. cava and low in H. fusiforme in general. 3. The most outstanding feature in the seasonal variation was that, in general, the total ash, crude protein, and alginic acid contents were at a maximum in the winter months while laminarin and mannitol contents were at a minimum. The converse was true in summer. Total ash-Maximum values were observed from December to February and minimum from August till October. Crude Protein-All species exhibited maxima in January and February, and minima from August to October. Alginic acid-Maximum contents occured from January to March and minimum from September to November. Mannitol-The maximum content of mannitol was In May and lune and minimum in January, February and March. Leminerin-Maximum content was in September and October, and minimum in January and February. 4. The wide seasonal variation in chemical constitution occured in the fronds, but the stipes showed a slight seasonal variation. In the chemical composition, the stipe was high in alginic acid, low in mannitol and laminarin. The reverse was in the frond.
A new commercial strain 'Jinhwang' of Pholiota adiposa was developed by hyphal anastomosis. It was developed with crossing between monokaryotic strains derived from ASI 24001 and ASI 24004. The optimum temperature of mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ and that of fruiting body development was $15{\sim}18^{\circ}C$. The color of pileus was yellowish brown and many scales and gelatinous sheath were on cap. Average number of individuals a bottle was 26 and its stipe was thick. P. adiposa can be produced by box cultivation using cotton waste.
'Daejang 3ho' is a new cultivar of oyster mushroom for high productivity than that of Chunchu 2ho. This cultivar was bred by Di-mon mating between monokaryotic strains isolated from 'Daejang 1ho' and dikaryotic strain 'Jangan 5ho'. The color of pileus and the shape of pileus of new cultivar were dark gray and deeply funnel shape, respectively. The length and thickness of stipe were longer and thicker than those of Chunchu 2ho. It took 4~5 days to formation of primordia, that was a similar to Chunchu 2ho. The optical temperature of fruit body was $14-17^{\circ}C$. Yield of 'Daejang 3ho' was 13.9% higher than that of Chunchu 2ho. Analysis of RAPD by URP-primer of #03, #08, #10 and #11 showed that different band pattern those of other strains. There were no significant differences between the texture properties of 'Daejang 3ho' and Chunchu 2ho.

This study was conducted to examine the growth and physiological characteristics of Asplenium scolopendrium native fern as affected by irrigation times and soil media as an environment modeled on habitate where was sunken-condition. 1. Light intensity was lower in sunken than in non-sunken, but air humidity was higher in sunken about $2040\%$. Soil moisture content was higher with the leaf mold in sunken irrigating 2 times/week. The results of chemical analysis of medium showed that EC, pH, organic matter content, total nitrogen, CEC, Exch-Ca, Exch-Mg and Exch-K were higher with leaf mold than sud: leafmold and field soil: sud: leaf mold. 2. In the case of irrigation 2 times/week Asplenium scolopendrium grew well sunken more than non-sunken. As non-sunken condition similar with, 7 times/week irrigation, plant height, frond width, frond length and stipe length increased. In case of soil media, growth of Asplenium scolopendrium was better with leaf mold than that of sand: leafmold or field soil: sand: leaf mold. 3. In the case of irrigation 2 times/week photosynthetic rate, $CO_2$ absorption rate and water efficiency were higher with non-sunken than that of sunken, expect of stomatal conduction, $CO_2$ use efficiency. The physiological characteristics of Asplenium scolopendrium were highest in non-sunken irrigating 7 times/week In case of soil media, physiological activity was higher with leaf mold than sand: leafmold or field soil: sand: leaf mold.
We identified Lacrymaria velutina of the Coprinaceae in Korea. The unusually large and sturdy fruiting body, fibrillose to fibrillose-scaly cap and stalk without a volva with an obscure superior hairy ring zone or hairy annulus, and blackish brown, warted spores distinguished this species from closely related Psathyrella species. An illustrated account of the microscopic traits is presented. Fruiting bodies with obtusely hemispherical caps, 2.5~6 cm, becoming convex with age; surface dry, densely fibrillose-scaly with split margin; stipe, 4.5~6 cm, equal, hollow, fibrillose, dry, whitish above the superior ring zone, light brown below; crowded gills, adnexed, dark black at maturity. Pileipellis typically cellular with the gill edge appearing white and beaded. Blackish brown basidiospores that discolor in concentrated sulfuric acid. Spores elliptical, warted, $9\sim11{\times}6\sim8{\mu}m$, with prominent snout-like germpores. Cheilocystidia abundant, $57\sim68{\times}19\sim25{\mu}m$, and narrowly elongated clavate, often clustered in threes or fours. Pleurocystidia rarely present, $45\sim47.5{\times}12\sim13{\mu}m$, and clavate to utriform. This trait distinguishes our sample as L. velutina from other Psathyrella spp. of the Coprinaceae, which have smooth spores. This taxon was clarified by the observation that Psathyrella spores fade in concentrated sulfuric acid. A molecular phylogenetic study revealed that our specimen was Lacrymria velutipes, which is closely related to Lacrymaria lacrymabunda. Moreover, those two species are clearly distinguishable from other Psathyrella species, which agreed with the morphologically distinctive traits described above. We believe that this is the first report of this taxon, which has not been described in Korea.
