  • A potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Superior) cultivar was grown in aeroponic cultivation system to investigate the effect of root zone cooling in summer. Based on their nutrient uptake, growth responses, and tuberization, the possibilities for potato seed production were determined. Although shoot growth and early tuberization increased in the conventional non-cooling root zone system (root zone temperature of $25\pm2^{\circ}C$), stolen growth, photosynthesis, transpiration rate and number of tubers produced were higher in the cooling root zone system ($20\pm2^{\circ}C$) than in the non-cooling system. Increasing root zone temperature above $25^{\circ}C$ stimulated absorption of K more than T-N, P, Ca, Fe and Mn. On the other hand, root zone temperatures in the range of $20^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ did not affect Mg contents. The lower uptake and supply to leaves of T-N, Fe and Mn at the high root zone temperature promoted early tuberization and advanced haulm senescence. The results stress the importance of keeping root zone temperature to as low as below 20, particularly in summer under temperate Bone.

  • Extracts of Panax ginseng root significantly induced tolerance of Fusarium oxysporum to heavy metal, mecury, as the fungal mycelial growth was less inhibited by mercury chloride on potato dextrose medium(PDA) amended with ginseng root than on the PDA with no ginseng amendment. The most favorable concentration of ginseng root powder in detoxification of mercury chloride was 1%. The induced tolerance of F. oxysporum to mercury chloride appeared to be rather due to absorption of ginseng components, and was not related to stimulation of mycelial growth of the fungus per so by ginseng treatment. Ginseng components responsible for inducing tolerance of the fungus to mercury were involved in the water fraction of the ginseng root extract, although the water fraction had no effect on enhancement of the mycelial growth on the medium without mercury chloride. The hexane fraction of ginseng root extract, by which the mycelial growth was stimulated, was not related to the inducement of the tolerance to mercury chloride. However, more tolerance to mercury chloride was noted in PDA with both the water and hexane fractions combined than with either of the two fractions. Six-year-old ginseng roots were more effective in detoxification of mercury chloride than 4-year-old ginsng roots, and American ginseng (P quinquifolium) had no or little effect on inducing tolerance of the fungus to mercury chloride. This method may be used to screen other natural materials for test in the detoxification of mercury chloride.

  • Earlier studies have shown that the administration of Na-alginate, a water-soluble, non absorbable acidic polysaccharide, effectively reduces the absorption of radioactive strontium, cadmium and other bivalent metals. In this study the effects of Na-alginate on the Toxicity induced by Lead and Cadmium were examined in rats and the following results were obtained. 1. The elevations of the activities of serum GOT, GPT by Pb and Cd administration in the experimental animals. However, the administration of Na-alginate significantly inhibited the elevation of serum GOT, GPT. 2. Generally serum TBA values were significantly elevated in Pb and Cd group in comparison with the control group. However, the administration of Na-alginate inhibited the elevation of serum TBA values. 3. The activity of Alkaline phosphatase was also significantly elevated in Cd group in comparison with the control group. However, the administration of Na-alginate significantly inhibited the elevation of serum alkaline phsphatase. 4. Furthermore, the activity of $\delta$-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase in red blood cells was also significantly inhibited by Pb and this inhibition was stimulated by the administration of Na-alginate. 5. The concentrations of Pb in liver and Cd in kidney were markedly increased by Pb and Cd. However, the administration of Na-alginate significantly inhibited the elevation of them.

  • Mast cell-mediated allergic disease is involved in many diseases such as anaphylaxis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. The discovery of drugs for the treatment of allergic disease is an important subject in human health. In the present study, the effect of water extract of Gleditsiae Spina (WGS) (Leguminosae), on compound 48/80-induced systemic allergic reaction, anti-DNP IgE antibody-induced local allergic reaction, and histamine release from human mast cell line (HMC-1) cells were studied. In addition, the effect of WGS on phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus calcium ionophore A23187 (A23187)-induced gene expression and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines were investigated using HMC-1 cells. WGS was anally administered to mice for high and fast absorption. WGS inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic allergic reaction. WGS dose-dependently decreased the IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. WGS reduced histamine release from HMC-1 cells. In addition, WGS decreased the gene expression and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in PMA plus A23187-stimulated HMC-1 cells. These findings provide evidence that WGS could be a candidate as an antiallergic agent.

  • $1.6\;{\mu}m$ emission originated from $Pr^{3+}:\;(^3F_3,\;^3F_4)\;{\longrightarrow}\;^3H_4$ transition in $Pr^{3+}-\;and\;Pr^{3+}/Er^{3+}$-doped selenide glasses was investigated under an optical pump of a conventional 1480 nm laser diode. The measured peak wavelength and fullwidth at half-maximum of the fluorescent emission are ~1650nm and 120nm, respectively. A moderate lifetime of the thermally coupled upper manifolds of ${\sim}212{\pm}10{\mu}s$ together with a high stimulated emission cross-section of ${\sim}(3{\pm}1){\times}10^{-20}\;cm^2$ promises to be useful for $1.6{\mu}m$ band fiber-optic amplifiers that can be pumped with an existing high-power 1480 nm laser diode. Codoping $Er^{3+}$ enhances the emission intensity by way of a nonradiative $Er^{3+}:\;^4I_{13/2}\;{\longrightarrow}\;Pr^{3+}:\;(^3F_3,\;^3F_4)$ energy transfer. The Dexter model based on the spectral overlap between donor emission and acceptor absorption describes well the energy transfer from $Er^{3+}$ to $Pr^{3+}$ in these glasses. Also discussed in this paper are major transmission loss mechanisms of a selenide glass optical fiber.

  • This study was carried out to the determine the effects of the water extract of Viticis Fructus (Verbenaceae, WEVF) on experimental allergic reactions and inflammation. WEVF was anally administered to mice for high and fast absorption. WEVF inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis and immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated local allergic reaction. Histamine releasing from mast cells was reduced by WEVF, which was mediated by modulation of intracellular calcium. In addition, WEVF decreased the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate plus calcium ionophore A23187 (PMACI)-stimulated HMC-1 cells. These findings demonstrate that the WEVF possesses antiallergic and anti-inflammatory activities, which may be mediated by reducing the release of mediators such as histamine from mast cells and weakening the inflammatory action of these mediators.

  • This study used a adult absorption dose phantom (CIRS model 701-G, USA) made of human equivalent material and the vascular imaging equipment Allura Xper FD 20 (Philips, Netherlands). Optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLD) were inserted into the anatomical positions corresponding to each organ, and the exposure dose was measured. Dose area product (DAP) and air kerma (AK) measured by the dose meter in the equipment were compared. Continuous imaging was performed at two angles for a total of 20 minutes, with a frame per seconds of 3.75 and 7.5 fps and an FOV of 42 cm, 37 cm, and 31 cm, respectively, under the conditions of fluoflavor I, II, and III, each selected for 5 repetitions. This study was found that selecting a lower fps was the most effective way to reduce patient exposure dose, and adjusting the fluoflavor was a good alternative method for reducing patient exposure dose at high fps. Therefore the method of condition change with the greatest dose reduction effect is to set the minimum FPS and can reduce patient exposure dose according to geometric conditions and fluoflavor characteristics.

  • The symbiotic activities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) by analyzing spore density, symbiosis intensity and vertical distribution of AMF spores, phytomasses of higher plants such as Calamagrostis epigeios, Imperata cylindrica, Artemisia scoparia, Aster tripolium and Sonchus brachyotus, and physico-chemical properties of soil were determined in the rhizospheres of higher plants in abandoned two coastal reclaimed lands, which were constructed in 12 and 30 years ago, respectively. Vertical distribution of the AMF spores in the rhizospheres of higher plants was restricted within 20 cm depth from soil surface, which would be closely related with vertical distribution of root system, water table and soil aeration. Of vertical distribution of soil properties, W.C., A-P and K concentrations were increased as soil depth was lowered. In the coastal reclaimed lands, symbiotic activities of the AMF such as spore density and symbiotic intensity, were conspicuously stimulated by the increase of soil pH value, organic matter and total nitrogen concentrations, but inhibited by the increase of moisture, available phosphorus and sodium concentrations in the rhizosphere soil. Phosphorus absorption by higher plants growing in the reclaimed lands increased by the rise of symbiotic activities of AMF. Since symbiotic activities of AMF were stimulated with decreasing soil phosphorus concentrations, higher plants associated with AMF absorbed a large amount of phosphorus from the soil is low phosphorus concentrations.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of light intensity and temperature on the photosynthesis and respiration of ginseng plant. Highly significant, second degree curvilinear regressions were recognized among the photosynthesis of ginseng leaves, light intensity and temperature. And an interaction between the effects of light intensity and temperature on the photosynthesis of ginseng leaves was found to be highly significant. The increasing rate of photosynthesis with the increase of light intensity was markedly decreased with increasing temperature. The light compensation point of ginseng leaves was significantly varied with temperature, and the average point was approximately 600 lux. The light saturation point of Korean ginseng was 11,000 lux at $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ and around 9,500 lux at above $25^{\circ}C$. The decreasing rate of photosynthesis with the increase of temperature significantly increased with increasing light intensity. The optimum temperature for the photosynthesis of ginseng leaves was about 15 to $22^{\circ}C$ and markedly decreased with increasing light intensity. The highest photosynthesis occurred in ginseng leaves grown with the shade of 15% transmittance. The respiration of ginseng leaves increased with the shade of 5% and/or 30% transmittance. High temperature stimulated the respiration of ginseng leaves. Percent respiration to photosynthesis of ginseng leaves grown with the shade was increased at high temperature and decreased with increasing light Intensity. It was also increased with increasing transmittance. The maximum $CO_2$ absorption of ginseng leaves grown with the shade of 5Ps and ISVS transmittance accurred at 9 o'clock a.m., whereas that of 20% transmittance occurred at 7-9 o'clock a.m. The duration of $CO_2$ absorption was distinctively long with the shade of high transmittance. The $CO_2$ compensation point in the photosynthesis of ginseng leaves was 130 ppm.
