The stiffness model has been proposed to predict elastic constants of twisted yarn composites. The model is based upon the unit cell structure, the coordinate transformation, and the volume averaging of compliance constants for constituent materials. For the correlation of analytic results with experiments, composite samples of various yarn twist angle were tested. The samples were fabricated by the RTM process using glass yarns and epoxy resin. The correlations of elastic constants showed relatively good agreements. The model provides the predictions of the three-dimensional engineering constants, which are valuable input data for the analytic characterization of textile composites made of twisted yarn.

Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are increasingly attractive for high technology components such as aerospace applications and transportations due to their high strength, stiffness, and toughness. Many processes for fabricating MMCs have been developed, and relatively simple Foil-Fiber-Foil method is usually employed in solid state consolidation processes. During the consolidation processes at high temperature, densification occurs by the inelastic flow of the matrix materials, and the process is coupled with the conditions of pressure, temperature and volume fraction of fiber and matrix materials. This is particularly important in titanium matrix composites, and thus a generic model based on micro-mechanical approaches enabling the evolution of density over time to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into FEM so that practical process simulation has been carried out. Further the experimental investigation of the consolidation behavior of SiC/Ti-6Al-4V composites using vacuum hot pressing has been performed, and the results obtained are compared with the model predictions.

A strut-and-tie based method intended for determining the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) corbels is presented in this paper. In addition to the normal strut-and-tie force equilibrium requirements, the proposed model is based on secant stiffness formulation, incorporating strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked RC. The proposed method evaluates the load-carrying capacity as limited by the failure modes associated with nodal crushing, yielding of the longitudinal principal reinforcement, as well as crushing or splitting of the diagonal strut. Load-carrying capacity predictions obtained from the proposed analysis method are in a better agreement with corbel test results of a comprehensive database, comprising 455 test results, compiled from the available literature, than other existing models for corbels. This method is illustrated to provide more accurate estimates of behaviour and capacity than the shear-friction based approach implemented by the ACI 318-11, the strut-and-tie provisions in different codes (American, Australian, Canadian, Eurocode and New Zealand).
This paper presents a tri-linear restoring force model based on the test results of 12 circular RC columns strengthened by CFRP strips under low cyclic loading. The pre-stress of CFRP strips and axial load ratio of specimens are considered as the affect parameters of the proposed model. All essential characteristics of the hysteretic behavior of the proposed model, including the hysteretic rules, main performance points, strength degradation, stiffness degradation and confinement effects are explicitly analyzed. The calculated results from the proposed model are in good agreement with the experimental results, which shows that the recommended model can be reliably used for seismic behavior predictions of circular RC columns strengthened by pre-stressed CFRP strips.
Recently, in the industrial applications, accurate arc control for welding machine are developed. This paper describes arc control of inverter-fed arc welding machine, and efficiency of inverter-fed arc welding machine. It is shown that the arc pressure and are stiffness of the pulse arc nay be as much as several times that of the equivalent dc are. Finally, the theoretical predictions are compared with test. The potential of such a welding machine is also described.

When cantilever beams rotate, their bending stiffnesses change due to the stretching caused by centrifugal inertia forces. Such phenomena result in variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes associated with constant speed rotational motions of the beams. These variations are important in many practical applications such as helicopter blades, turbomachines, and space structures. This paper presents the formulation of a set of linear equations governing the flapwise bending vibration of rotating cantilever beams. These equations can be used to provide accurate predictions of the variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes due to rotation.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected. local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.
The truss analogy for the analysis of beam-columns subjected of shear and flexure is limited by the contribution of transverse and longitudinal steel and diagonal concrete compression struts. However, it should be noted that even though the behavior of reinforced concrete beam-columns after cracking can be modeled with the truss analogy, they are not perfect trusses but still structural elements with a measure of continuity provided by a diagonal tension field. The mere notion of compression field denotes that there should be some tension field coexisting perpendicularly to it. The compression field is assumed to form parallel to the crack plane that forms under combined flexure and shear. Therefore, the concrete tension field may be defined as a mechanism existing across the crack and resisting crack opening. In this paper, the effect of concrete tensile properties on the shear strength and stiffness of reinforced concrete beam-columns is discussed using the Gauss two-point truss model. The theoretical predictions are validated against the experimental observations. Although the agreement is not perfect, the comparison shows the correct trend in degradation as the inelasticity increases.
A detailed finite element modeling is presented for the simulation of the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures which manages to predict the nonlinear behavior of four different experimental setups with computational efficiency, robustness and accuracy. The proposed modeling method uses 8-node hexahedral isoparametric elements for the discretization of concrete. Steel rebars may have any orientation inside the solid concrete elements allowing the simulation of longitudinal as well as transverse reinforcement. Concrete cracking is treated with the smeared crack approach, while steel reinforcement is modeled with the natural beam-column flexibility-based element that takes into consideration shear and bending stiffness. The performance of the proposed modeling is demonstrated by comparing the numerical predictions with existing experimental and numerical results in the literature as well as with those of a commercial code. The results show that the proposed refined simulation predicts accurately the nonlinear inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures achieving numerical robustness and computational efficiency.
In this study, a new model to predict the effective elastic constants of composites with spherical fillers is proposed. The original Eshelby model is extended to a finite filler volume fraction without using Mori-Tanaka's mean field approach. When single filler is embedded in the matrix, the effective elastic constants of the composite are computed. The composite is in turn considered as a new matrix, where new single filler is again embedded in the matrix. The predicted results by the present model with a series of embedding procedures are compared with those by Mori-Tanaka, self-consistent, and generalized self-consistent models. It is revealed through parametric studies such as stiffness ratio of the filler to the matrix and filler volume fraction that the present model gives more accurate predictions than Mori-Tanaka model without using the complicated numerical scheme used in self-consistent and generalized self-consistent models.
