The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of stiffened element and edge stiffener in the behaviour and flexural strength of built-up cold-formed steel beams. An experimental and analytical analysis of CFS channel sections in four different geometries is conducted, including simple channel sections, a stiffened channel section with or without edge stiffeners. Nonlinear finite element models are developed using finite element analysis software package ANSYS. The FEA results are verified with the experimental results. Further, the finite element model is used for parametric studies by varying the depth, thickness, and the effect of stiffened element, edge stiffener and their interaction with compression flanges on stiffened built-up cold-formed steel beams with upright edge stiffeners. In addition, the flexural strength predicted by the finite element analysis is compared with the design flexural strength calculated by using the North American Iron and Steel Institute Specifications for cold-formed steel structures (AISI: S100-2007) and suitable suggestion is made.

The current trend in shipyard industry is to reduce the weight of ships to support the reduction of CO2 emissions. In this study, the stiffened plate was optimized that is used for building most of the ship-structure. Further, this study proposed the hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique, which combines a genetic algorithm and subsequent optimization methods. The design variables included the number and type of stiffeners, stiffener spacing, and plate thickness. The number and type of stiffeners are discrete design variables that were optimized using the genetic algorithm. The stiffener spacing and plate thickness are continuous design variables that were determined by subsequent optimization. The plate deformation was classified into global and local displacement, resulting in accurate estimations of the maximum displacement. The optimization result showed that the proposed hybrid GA is effective for obtaining optimal solutions, for all the design variables.
Tubular joints are usually reinforced using thicker can section or ring stiffeners to increase the load carrying capacity. In this paper, a numerical study has been performed for evaluation of axial strength for X-joints with internal ring stiffener, The finite element analysis software was used for nonlinear strength analysis. According to variation of ring geometries, the effect of ring stiffener for X-joints are investigated. Internal ring stiffener is found to be efficient improving ultimate strength of tubular joints. Relations of thickness of ring and axial strength are observed considering geometric parameters of ring stiffeners.
An efficient procedure to obtain the optimal stacking sequence and the minimum weight of stiffened laminated composite curved panels under several loading conditions and stiffener layouts has been developed based on the finite element method and the genetic algorithm that is powerful for the problem with integer variables. Often, designing composite laminates ends up with a stacking sequence optimization that may be formulated as an integer programming problem. This procedure is applied for a problem to find the stacking sequence having a maximum critical buckling load factor and the minimum weight. The object function in this case is the weight of a stiffened laminated composite shell. Three different types of stiffener layouts with different loading conditions are investigated to see how these parameters influence on the stacking sequence optimization of the panel and the stiffeners. It is noticed from the results that the optimal stacking sequence and lay-up angles vary depending on the types. of loading and stiffener spacing.
Based on the authors' previous work, where a geometric constraint handling technique for stiffener layout optimization problem using geometry algorithms was proposed, stiffener layout optimization to maximize natural frequencies of a curved three-dimensional shell structure was performed with a projection method. The original geometry of the shell structure was first projected on a two-dimensional plane, and then the whole optimization process was performed with the projected geometry of the shell except that the original shell structure was used for the eigenproblem solving. The projection method can be applied to baseline structures with a one-to-one correspondence between original and projected geometries such as automobile hoods and roofs.
Recently, it has been important to develop light, silent and less-vibrational automobile. In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of the noise caused by the main silencer components-stiffener flange, inlet pipe and exhaust pipe etc., computational flow analysis, vibration and noise experiments were performed about the variable heights of the stiffener flange. Flow structure in the mainsilencer which calculated by CFD solver-IDEAS ESC, and frequency response function results of impact hammer test was proposed and it was found good agreement between former results and the exhaust orifice noise measured.
According to the PSPC (Performance Standard for Protective coatings) rule, the edge preparation must keep 2R or 3-pass grinding. The stiffener plate edge grinding of the ship inside is manually progressed by worker and worked with just one pass grinding. In addition, the poor working condition cause grinding workers to avoid working in them, and the quality is determined by the skill-level of a worker. This research developed optimal tool for edge milling. In order to milling various collar plates edge, this research developed vision system that can recognize the edge points and it developed a program that operator can adjust the amount of cutting and speed, and add various features so that milling quality would be improved. So, this research focused on overcoming the difficulties in working condition and development of automated milling machine for ship stiffener plate.
