  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the tribological behavior of NAO (non-asbestos organic) type brake linings containing different volume ratios of graphite and antimony trisulfide (Sb$_2$S$_3$). In order to investigate the effect of the solid lubricants on brake performance, three different friction tests (pressure, speed, and temperature sensitive tests) were carried out using a scale dynamometer. The test results showed that the friction characteristics were strongly affected by the type and the amount of solid lubricants in the brake lining. It was found that the brake linings with both solid lubricants were better in friction stability due to the complementary role of the two disparate lubricating properties at various pressure and speed conditions. In particular, the brake lining containing higher concentrations of graphite showed better fade resistance than others during high temperature friction test.

  • To interpret the perception that originates from tactile sensibility during people touch and recognize the object surfaces, this study focuses on the development of a friction model that can describe the interaction of a stylus pen sliding over the counter surfaces. In addition, the study includes several other experimental factors such as the pressure, temperature, and topology of surface, which can have an effect on the emotional user experience concerning various surfaces; this research aims to suggest a method to quantitatively evaluate the relation between these experimental parameters and emotional user experience. Accordingly, the objective of research comprises the friction characteristic technology for measurement of fine tribological behavior and a standard to quantify the emotional feedback. Existing panels or input devices that provide interaction feedback about user actions simply operate with a single frequency vibration or sound response. On the contrary, this research investigates various interaction characteristics including friction force, frequency, and surface topology synthetically. Using the developed model, which can explain the relation between the friction parameters and emotional user experience, developers can design their product in order to provide the user with expected emotional sensibility. Consequently, it can contribute to reduce the development cost about sensitivity model.

  • Friction in cold forging with mist lubrication is measured with the ring compression test. Small quantity of mist lubricant is sprayed onto the surfaces of cemented tungsten carbide (WC) tools polished to mirror surfaces, and the specimens of pure aluminum are compressed. It is found that spraying small quantity of lubricant $(0.5\;g/m^2)$ is effective to reduce the friction in comparison with the dry condition. The mist particles stick to the tool surface as separated dots, and the behavior of the trapped mist lubricant between the tool and specimen during upsetting is discussed.

  • Four degrees of freedom mathematical model is presented to describe the fundamental mechanisms of the disc brake squeal noise. A contact parameter is introduced to describe the coupling between the in-plane and the out-of-plane motions. The friction coeficient including "relative velocity" and ′normal force" can be generally formulated as the form of multiplication with polynominal parameters(${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$). (omitted)

  • A method to reduce the Contraction and Expansion (CE) noise occurred in an air conditioner is investigated. The noise is measured during the cooling and heating phases in a temperature and humidity chamber to identify the generating phenomenon of CE noise of the air conditioner and the decomposition method is used to estimate its occurrence location. The CE noise of an air conditioner is known to be caused by a stick-slip phenomenon generated by joints of parts connected to the lower decor. Thus a friction experiment was conducted to investigate noise inducing factors. Also, this study established evaluation criteria to effectively analyze the results from friction experiments. Experimental results indicate that increasing surface roughness on both sides of joints is effective. Accordingly, the effect of increased surface roughness on joints of upper and lower decor of air conditioners is evaluated to see its feasibility in a temperature and humidity chamber.

  • This paper suggests two simple two-degree-of-freedom models to describe the dynamical interaction between the pad and the disc of a disc brake system. Separate models for in-plane and out -of-plane vibration are described. Although a brake pad and disc have many modes of vibration, the interaction between a single mode of each component is considered as this is thought to be crucial for brake noise. For both models, the pad and the disc are connected by a sliding friction interface having a velocity dependent friction coefficient. In this paper, it is shown that this friction model acts as negative damping in the system that describes the in-plane vibration, and as negative stiffness in system that describes the out-of-plane vibration. Stability analysis is performed to investigate the conditions under which the systems become unstable. The results of the stability analysis show that the damping is the most important parameter for in-plane vibration, whereas the stiffness is the most important parameter for the out-of-plane vibration.

  • In this paper, Time Delay Control(TDC) for robot manipulators is analyzed and its problems are founded. In order to remedy the problems, the enhanced controller is proposed and analyzed. The effect of friction associated with TDC is reported and its cause is presented. Through the analysis, simulation and experiment, it is shown that the friction effect causes serious degradation in control performance and that it is a result of the error of Time Delay Estimation(TDE) in TDC. In order to remedy the problems, TDC combined with Internal Model Control(IMC) concept is proposed. The proposed compensator is effective enough to handle the bad effect of friction, and is so simple and efficient as to match positive attribute of TDC. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of proposed controller against the friction of the robot manipulators.

  • A study on the development of control loading system for a pilot command in the helicopter flight training device is performed. The key issue of the device is how to provide closely the real feeling of the stick forces to the trainer during the flight training. Focusing on this proviso and considering the suitable approach than the complexity of the hydraulic system, we adopt the AC servo motor system although its inherent disadvantages such as the torque ripple and the stick-slip friction effect at a low control force. However, we overcome these detrimental effects by introducing the appropriate control device and the robust structural design of the actuating system, thereby the feasibility and applicability to the system can be obtained by showing good performance, meeting the required specification.

  • In order to achieve high precision machine tools, the research for performance enhancement of feed drive systems is required. Development of the high speed feed drive system has been a major issue for the past few decades in machine tool industries. The reduction of the tool change time as well as rapid travel time can enhance the productivity. However, the high speed feed drive system generates more heat in nature, which leads thermal expansion that has adverse effects on the accuracy of machined parts. Stick-slip friction has a great influence on the contouring accuracy of CNC machine tools. In this paper table levitation system has been developed for the stick-slip in a feed drive systems. And also, the driving position is set near the center of the main slideway. From the results, it is confirmed that yaw error and straightness can be improved.

  • This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.
