  • This study aims to investigate contamination level and effective clinical disinfection methods of dental air/water syringes (AWS) by using microbial incubation. This study used AWS of ten dental unit chairs of Hospital. Total 180 samples were obtained. There are six groups of samples: non-sterilized (group 1), sanitized with wet-gauze (group 2), sanitized with 78% ethanol sponge for 10 seconds (group 3), sanitized with 78% ethanol sponge for 20 seconds (group 4), sanitized with 1 : 100 diluted High Level Disinfectant$^{(R)}$ (group 5), autoclaved (group 6). Group 1 and 2 showed statistically significant level of CFUs than Group 4, 5 and 6 (p < 0.05). Group 4, 5 and 6 did not show any noticeable CFU. Sanitizing AWS tips with ethanol and High level Disinfectant$^{(R)}$ proves to be a useful and practical method for preventing cross-infections.

  • To develop commercial semi-solid apple baby food, the physicochemical characteristics of apple puree in relation to different preparing methods and the effect of the addition methods of ascorbic acid on browning reaction were investigated. The preparing methods were classified into 3 groups by initial heating treatment: no heating (A), steaming at $120^{\circ}C$ (B), and blancing at $100^{\circ}C$ (C). The viscosity of tested apple puree was $2,600{\sim}5,856\;cp$, and contents of anhydrogalaturonic acid (AGA) and neutral sugar ranged $4.15{\sim}11.92\;mg%$ and $6.18{\sim}10.65\;mg%$, respectively. Among free sugars tested, level of fructose was the highest $(5.43{\sim}8.87%)$, followed by glucose $(2.11{\sim}4.23%)$, sucrose $(1.64{\sim}2.94%)$, in that order. Since small amounts of ascorbic acid were detected $(1.54{\sim}1.83\;mg%)$, it seemed to be lost by heating process in preparing of apple puree. For apple puree A, its lightness was lower and redness was higher than those of apple puree B and C. Its degree of browning of apple puree was so high that sodium ascorbic acid was added as a antibrowning agent. Puree had low sensory score and nutrient quality. The adding methods of ascorbic acid were classified into 4 groups by adding time: dipping, blending (2), heating (3), and blending + heating (4). Considering color and preference evaluation, preparing method B and adding method 2 showed the highest inhibitory activity on apple puree browning and desirable color for retort baby food. After retort sterilization, the viscosity of apple baby food was decreased from 3,477 cp to 2,294 cp, thiamin was destroyed completely, and the contents of riboflavin and ascorbic acid were decreased 41% and 21%, respectively. However, contents of free sugar and free amino acid and sensory parameter were not influenced by retort sterilization. In overall, the preparing method B-adding method 2 was a good processing condition for the retort apple baby food.

  • The use of autogenous tissues is preferred for knee ligament reconstruction. However allografts play a role in major ligament reconstructive procedures in which multiple substitutions or revisions are required. In the dislocated knee, allografts may offer an advantage in reconstructing the PCL. But allografts in knee ligament surgery must be considered in terms of biomechanical and regenerative properties, disease transmission and immunogenecity, and methods of preservation and sterilization. Also only a few authors have described the use of allograft for reconstruction of a ruptured PCL, either a single procedure, or in combination with ACL repair following knee dislocation. Furthermore, the problems that the clinician faces with use of allografts is the necessity for supervision to ensure that the grafts are correctly processed, secondarily sterilized, and free of transmissible diseases. For these reasons, the routine use of allograft materials in the treatment of ligament deficiencies should be avoid and provide with meaningful outcome studies, including longterm follow-up.

  • Ionizing radiation is one of the efficient non-thermal pasteurization methods. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows the use of ionizing radiation to a dose up to 10 kGy for controlling foodborne pathogens and extending the self-life of foods. Recently X-rays, generated on absorption of high energy electrons in an appropriate metal target, have been used commercially for sterilization purposes. X-rays have the advantages of higher penetration power than E-beams and absence of harmful radioactive sources, such as Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 associated with gamma-rays. That is why it has continued to receive attention as an attractive alternative to gamma-ray or E-beam irradiation. In this article, the potential of X-ray irradiation for controlling foodborne pathogens in various food products and necessary pre-requisite knowledge for the introduction of X-ray irradiation to the Korean food industry will be provided.

  • Recently, the use of fumigants for pest control of paper cultural heritages are limited because of the high toxicity of fumigants and the production of environment-harmfully compounds. Therefore, many non-chemical methods have been discussed and experimented. And it is recently focused on gamma radiation, which is one of non-chemical methods, for pest control of paper cultural heritage in Korea. In this paper, we carried out a gamma ray irradiation of papers including Hanji, copy paper, filter paper and then analyzed a physical properties and optical properties of paper sample to estimate the effect of gamma ray irradiation on paper properties. In result, gamma radiation have adverse effect on a physical properties and optical properties of paper, especially Hanji. Therefore, we have to carefully consider about using of gamma ray for pest control of paper cultural heritages.

  • Bioterrorism intends to cause mass casualties and social panic by means of malicious pathogenic microorganisms. Environmental decontamination becomes very important as a follow-up measure if that happens. Conventional methods for decontamination is that aqueous disinfectants are being sprayed for killing or not spreading microorganisms with the purpose of preventing infection. However, these procedures are not enough to perfectly sterilize space or surface inside of building, requiring additional measures such as surface disinfection or gas treatment methods. This article deals with the issues about the present decontamination procedures, global trends, in order to formulate suggestion for advanced environmental decontamination.

  • The use of micro bubbles in industrial fields has been increasing in the recent years., particularly micro-bubble sterilization and water purification effects. Various methods have been developed for the generation of micro-bubbles. Depending on the method of generating bubbles, the micro-bubbles can be roughly classified into saturation molding, cavitation and rotation flow types. The objective of this study was to use ventilated tube type as a method of generating micro-bubbles in order to purify large amount of water quality such as lakes and reservoirs. This method shows a difference in efficiency in which micro-bubbles are generated depending on the contact ratio of gas to liquid. The study also investigated the optimal gas liquid contact ratio by applying various orifice methods and investigated the optimum condition of micro-bubble generation by gas Based on this, a technology to develop a micro-bubble generator with a venturi type nozzle shape that has a high water purification effect was developed.

  • Objectives: Designing in situ models for caries research is a demanding procedure, as both clinical and laboratory parameters need to be incorporated in a single study. This study aimed to construct an informative guideline for planning in situ models relevant to preexisting caries studies. Materials and Methods: An electronic literature search of the PubMed database was performed. A total 191 of full articles written in English were included and data were extracted from materials and methods. Multiple variables were analyzed in relation to the publication types, participant characteristics, specimen and appliance factors, and other conditions. Frequencies and percentages were displayed to summarize the data and the Pearson's chi-square test was used to assess a statistical significance (p < 0.05). Results: There were many parameters commonly included in the majority of in situ models such as inclusion criteria, sample sizes, sample allocation methods, tooth types, intraoral appliance types, sterilization methods, study periods, outcome measures, experimental interventions, etc. Interrelationships existed between the main research topics and some parameters (outcome measures and sample allocation methods) among the evaluated articles. Conclusions: It will be possible to establish standardized in situ protocols according to the research topics. Furthermore, data collaboration from comparable studies would be enhanced by homogeneous study designs.

  • Various sterilization methods were applied to the powder of ginseng for the improving hygienic quality. Ultra-violet (UV) and Infrared ray (IR) treatments could not inhibit highly growth of bacteria in ginseng powder. However, high hydrostatic pressure treatment showed high inhibition rate against bacterial growth in ginseng powder. Changes of viable cell count by the pressure showed positive relationship between growth inhibition rates and the pressures applied. When powder was treated with 2,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 min at $25^{\circ}C$, initial viable cell count of the powder, 2.0$\times$10$^4$CFU/g, was decreased to 1.0$\times$10$^4$CFU/g. When it treated with 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of pressures under the same condition, viable cell counts were 8.0$\times$10$^3$, 7.0$\times$10$^3$and 1.8$\times$ 10$^3$CFU/g, respectively. Ginseng saponins of the powders were all detected when analyzed by TLC chromatography after treatment with the Pressures. Therefore, it was considered that saponin of ginseng powder was stable under the condition of 5,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of pressure, even though the treatment induced coagulation of the powder.
