Generally, stereo pair images are necessary for 3D viewing. In the absence of quality stereo-pair images, it is possible to synthesize a stereo-mate suitable for 3D viewing with a single image and a depth-map. In remote sensing, DEM is usually used as a depth-map. In this paper, LiDAR data was used instead of DEM to make a stereo pair from a single aerial photo. Each LiDAR point was assigned a brightness value from the original single image by registration of the image and LiDAR data. And then, imaginary exposure station and image plane were assumed. Finally, LiDAR points with already-assigned brightness values were back-projected to the imaginary plane for synthesis of a stereo-mate. The imaginary exposure station and image plane were determined to have only a horizontal shift from the original image's exposure station and plane. As a result, the stereo-mate synthesized in this paper fulfilled epipolar geometry and yielded easily-perceivable 3D viewing effect together with the original image. The 3D viewing effect was tested with anaglyph at the end.
This paper describes an implementation of adaptive stereo matching for DBM generation. The matching method of two stereo satellite images to find corresponding points used in this paper is area-based matching, which is usually used in the field of making DBM. Same window size and search area used as in the conventional matching methods and we propose adaptive stereo matching algorithm in this paper. We cluster three areas which are consist of mountainous areas, cultivated areas and cities, and rivers and lakes by using proposed linear feature extracting method. These classified areas are matched by adaptive window size and search area, but rivers and lakes is excluded in this experiment. The matching time is three times faster than conventional methods.

Stereoscopic viewing is an efficient technique for not only computer vision but also remote sensing applications. Generally, stereo pair obtained at the same time is necessary for 3D viewing, but it is possible to synthesize a stereomate suitable for stereo view with a single image and disparity-map. There have been researches concerning the generation of the synthetic stereomate from remote sensing imagery. However it is hard to find researches concerning the restoration of occlusion in stereomate. In this paper, we generated synthetic stereomates from remote sensing images, focused on the occlusion restoration. In order to figure out proper restoration methods depending on the spatial resolution of remote sensing imagery, we tested several methods including general interpolation and inpainting technique, then evaluated the results.

Lane Sensing techniques based on vision sensors are regarded promising because they require little infrastructure on the highway except clear lane markers. However, they require more intelligent processing algorithms in vehicles to generate the previewed roadway from the vision images. In this paper, a lane sensing algorithm using vision sensors is developed to improve the sensing robustness. The parallel stereo-camera is utilized to regenerate the 3-dimensional road geometry. The lane geometry models are derived such that their parameters represent the road curvature, lateral offset and heading angle, respectively. The parameters of the lane geometry models are estimated by the Kalman filter and utilized to reconstruct the lane geometry in the global coordinate. The inverse perspective mapping from the image plane to the global coordinate considers roll and pitch motions of a vehicle so that the mapping error is minimized during acceleration, braking or steering. The proposed sensing system has been built and implemented on a 1/10-scale model car.
Some animals have special sensing functions in order to find foods, home and mates. Instead of passively sensing, they discharge signals and then extract necessary information from the response. More importantly, they utilize the gradients of the sensed signal in order to find the destination or objects. In this paper this special strategy is formulated mathematically, i.e., the perturbation and the correlation based gradient estimation is developed. A stereo sensor system using temperature sensors mounted on motors is developed for verification. The proposed method can estimate the gradient of the measured value accurately. Using this method, the direction in the maximum measured value can be estimated accurately, and the position of the heat source can be estimated from the intersection of the directions estimated from both sensors.
Remote sensing (RS) data show the surfaces of the earth only but cannot provide the shape data of building sides. The proposed method recovers a 3D shape of building sides from stereo images. Its result shows a higher possibility for recovering a large shaped object by overcoming the difficulties of traditional stereo matching techniques. The urban area will be visualized more realistically than the current model based on graphic and vector data.
In 1799, Korea has become a country that holds Earth observation satellite in orbit as they had succeeded in the launch of KOPMSAT-1, the first Korean Earth observation satellite for the practical purpose. For the wide application of the satellite imagery, various application techniques are required, and topographic mapping is essential technique for the application in various fields. Moreover, considering that the main mission of the KOMPSAT-1 is to provide the satellite imagery for the mapping of Korean peninsula, the topographic mapping using KOMPSAT-1 EOC imagery is very significant. In this paper, we showed the possibility of digital plotting using KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images to produce topographic map. For the purpose, we implemented experimental stereo plotting using digital photogrammetric workstation and analyzed the procedure. As a result of this paper, we showed that some elements consist in 1:25,000 scale map can be plotted from KOMPSAT-1 Stereo images.
Epipolar images have to be generated to stereo display aerial images or satellite images. Pushbroom sensor is used to acquire high resolution satellite images. These satellite images have curvilinear epipolar lines unlike the epipolar lines of frame images, which are straight lines. The aforementioned fact makes it difficult to generate epipolar images for pushbroom satellite images. If we assume a linear transition of the sensor having constant speed and attitude during image acquisition, we can generate epipolar images based on parallel projection model (20 Affine model). Recent high resolution images are provided with RPC values so that we can exploit these values to generate epipolar images without using ground control points and tie point. This paper provides a procedure based on the parallel projection model for generating epipolar images directly from a stereo IKONOS images, and experimental results.
In general, stereo images are widely used to remote sensing or photogrametric applications for the purpose of image understanding and feature extraction or cognition. However, the most cases of these stereo-based application deal with 2-D satellite images or the airborne photos so that its main targets are generation of small-scaled or large-scaled DEM(Digital Elevation Model) or DSM(Digital Surface Model), in the 2.5-D. Contrast to these previous approaches, the scope of this study is to investigate 3-D stereo processing and visualization of true geo-referenced 3-D features based on anaglyph technique, and the aim is at the prototype development for stereo visualization system of complex typed 3-D GIS features. As for complex typed 3-D features, the various kinds of urban landscape components are taken into account with their geometric characteristics and attributes. The main functions in this prototype are composed of 3-D feature authoring and modeling along with database schema, stereo matching, and volumetric visualization. Using these functions, several technical aspects for migration into actual 3-D GIS application are provided with experiment results. It is concluded that this result will contribute to more specialized and realistic applications by linking 3-D graphics with geo-spatial information.
Stereo matching has been grabbing the attention of researchers because it plays an important role in computer vision, remote sensing and photogrammetry. Although most methods perform well with small size images, experiments applying them to large-scale data sets under uncontrolled conditions are still lacking. In this paper, we present an empirical study on stereo matching for large-scale high-resolution satellite images. A new method is studied to solve the problem of huge size and memory requirement when dealing with large-scale high resolution satellite images. Integrating the tiling technique with the well-known dynamic programming and coarse-to-fine pyramid scheme as well as using memory wisely, the suggested method can be utilized for huge stereo satellite images. Analyzing 350 points from an image of size of 8192 x 8192, disparity results attain an acceptable accuracy with RMS error of 0.5459. Taking the trade-off between computational aspect and accuracy, our method gives an efficient stereo matching for huge satellite image files.
