Control of an Underwater Stereo Camera Embedded in a Single Canister Capable of Measuring Distance (거리측정이 가능한 단동형 수중 스테레오 카메라의 제어)

  • This paper present the control of the image disparity of a parallel stereo camera and its application to an underwater stereo camera to enhance the working efficiency of underwater vehicles that are equiped with manipulators in seabed operation. The stereo camera consists of two parallel lenses mounted on a lateral moving base and two CCD cameras mounted on a longitudinal moving base, which is embedded in a small pressure canister for underwater application. Because the lateral shift is related to the backward shift with a nonlinear relation, only one control input is needed to control the vergence and focus of the camera with a special driving device. We can get clear stereo vision with the camera for all the range of objects in air and in water, especially in short range object. The control system of the camera is so simple that we are able to realize a small stereo camera system and apply it to a stereo vision system for underwater vehicles. This paper also shows how to acquire the distance information of an underwater object with this stereo camera. Whenever we focus on an underwater object with the camera, we can obtain three-dimensional images and distance information in real-time.

Incorporation of Scene Geometry in Least Squares Correlation Matching for DEM Generation from Linear Pushbroom Images

  • Stereo matching is one of the most crucial parts in DEM generation. Naive stereo matching algorithms often create many holes and blunders in a DEM and therefore a carefully designed strategy must be employed to guide stereo matching algorithms to produce “good” 3D information. In this paper, we describe one such a strategy designed by the use of scene geometry, in particular, the epipolarity for generation of a DEM from linear pushbroom images. The epipolarity for perspective images is a well-known property, i.e., in a stereo image pair, a point in the reference image will map to a line in the search image uniquely defined by sensor models of the image pair. This concept has been utilized in stereo matching by applying epipolar resampling prior to matching. However, the epipolar matching for linear pushbroom images is rather complicated. It was found that the epipolarity can only be described by a Hyperbola- shaped curve and that epipolar resampling cannot be applied to linear pushbroom images. Instead, we have developed an algorithm of incorporating such epipolarity directly in least squares correlation matching. Experiments showed that this approach could improve the quality of a DEM.

  • In this paper, we propose a new watermarking technique for copyright protection of stereo image. The proposed technique embeds watermark to the region which corresponds to occlusion of the disparity map to be extracted by the proposed stereo matching and the frequency coefficient with the appropriate value. We use discrete wavelet transform for frequency transform tool. The proposed algorithm consists of stereo matching, watermark rearrange, mark space selection, and watermark embedding/extracting. We tested the experiment about 4 stereo images which are from Middlebury site. We embedded the watermark to 4 stereo images and extracted it from the images after attacks. We also visually analyzed the watermark embedding images in 3D TV environment.

Stereo matching for large-scale high-resolution satellite images using new tiling technique

  • Stereo matching has been grabbing the attention of researchers because it plays an important role in computer vision, remote sensing and photogrammetry. Although most methods perform well with small size images, experiments applying them to large-scale data sets under uncontrolled conditions are still lacking. In this paper, we present an empirical study on stereo matching for large-scale high-resolution satellite images. A new method is studied to solve the problem of huge size and memory requirement when dealing with large-scale high resolution satellite images. Integrating the tiling technique with the well-known dynamic programming and coarse-to-fine pyramid scheme as well as using memory wisely, the suggested method can be utilized for huge stereo satellite images. Analyzing 350 points from an image of size of 8192 x 8192, disparity results attain an acceptable accuracy with RMS error of 0.5459. Taking the trade-off between computational aspect and accuracy, our method gives an efficient stereo matching for huge satellite image files.

  • Unlike aerial images covering small region, satellite data show high potential to detect urban scale geospatial changes. The change detection using satellite images can be carried out using single image or stereo images. The single image approach is based on radiometric differences between two images of different times. It has limitations to detect building level changes when the significant occlusion and relief displacement appear in the images. In contrast, stereo satellite data can be used to generate DSM (Digital Surface Model) that contain information of relief-corrected objects. Therefore, they have high potential for the object change detection. Therefore, we carried out a study for the change detection over an urban area using stereo satellite data of two different times. First, the RPC correction was performed for two DSMs generation via stereo image matching. Then, D-DSM (Differential DSM) was generated by differentiating two DSMs. The D-DSM was used for the topographic change detection and the performance was checked by applying different height thresholds to D-DSM.

  • This thesis explores the problem of reconstructing a three-dimensional(3D) scene given a set of images or image sequences of the scene. It describes efficient methods for the 3D reconstruction of static and dynamic scenes from stereo images, stereo image sequences, and images captured from multiple viewpoints. Novel methods for image-based and volumetric modelling approaches to 3D reconstruction are presented, with an emphasis on the development of efficient algorithm which produce high quality and accurate reconstructions. For image-based 3D reconstruction a novel energy minimisation scheme, Iterated Dynamic Programming, is presented for the efficient computation of strong local minima of discontinuity preserving energyy functions. Coupled with a novel morphological decomposition method and subregioning schemes for the efficient computation of a narrowband matching cost volume. the minimisation framework is applied to solve problems in stereo matching, stereo-temporal reconstruction, motion estimation, 2D image registration and 3D image registration. This thesis establishes Iterated Dynamic Programming as an efficient and effective energy minimisation scheme suitable for computer vision problems which involve finding correspondences across images. For 3D reconstruction from multiple view images with arbitrary camera placement, a novel volumetric modelling technique, Embedded Voxel Colouring, is presented that efficiently embeds all reconstructions of a 3D scene into a single output in a single scan of the volumetric space under exact visibility. An adaptive thresholding framework is also introduced for the computation of the optimal set of thresholds to obtain high quality 3D reconstructions. This thesis establishes the Embedded Voxel Colouring framework as a fast, efficient and effective method for 3D reconstruction from multiple view images.

  • We detect the obstacle for the UGV(unmanned ground vehicle) from the compound image which is generated by stereo vision sensor masking the depth image and color image. Stereo vision sensor can gathers the distance information by stereo camera. The obstacle information from the depth compound image can be send to mobile robot and the robot can localize the indoor area. And, we test the performance of the mobile robot in terms of distance between the obstacle and the robot's position and also test the color, depth and compound image respectively. Moreover, we test the performance in terms of number of frame per second which is processed by operating machine. From the result, compound image shows the improved performance in distance and number of frames.

  • In this paper, we propose a stereo image composition method based on Poisson image editing. If we synthesize images without considering their depth values, it may lead to unwanted consequences. When we segment an image into its background and foreground regions using Grabcut, we take into account their geometric positions to mix color tones; thus, the image is composited more naturally. After synthesizing images, we apply a blurring operation around object boundaries; then, the foreground object and background are composited more seamlessly. In addition, we can adjust the distance of the object by setting arbitrary depth values and generating right color and depth images automatically. Experimental results show that the proposed stereo image composition method provides naturally synthesized stereo images. Improved portions were subjectively confirmed as well.

  • In this paper, a new stereo image compression algorithm is suggested in which the residual image extracted from the stereo image by the disparity-compensated prediction method is compressed using the wavelet transform considering the inter & intra correlation between subbands. The compression performance of the proposed method is significantly improved by comparing with the conventional algorithm such as EPIC, EPWIC & JPEG through the computer simulation and the PSNR is also increased about 3.5dB compared with the EPIC. Finally, the stereo image having a good 3D effect can be reconstructed from the compressed image data by the proposed method.

  • This paper is a study on the 3D infrared image enhancement with Stereoscopic algorithm on still infrared image. The adapted stereo method is that the depth is extracted by comparison with right-left image, and the enhanced 3D infrared image by matching based on feature is realized. As the result of experiment this method forced the more smooth edge lines of 3D infrared images.
