  • Purpose: A descriptive study was conducted to examine the relationship of illness perception, self-efficacy, and self-care of patients who were diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: The study was conducted using a convenient sample from two hospitals in Incheon and Seoul. One hundred forty four patients completed a questionnaire which included questions on general characteristics, a Brief Illness Perception Scale, a Self-efficacy Scale and a Self-care Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Moment Correlations and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant positive correlation between illness perception and self-care (r=.335, p=.000) and between self-efficacy and self-care (r=.687, p=.000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that among the three variables the most powerful predictor was self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and illness perception were significant factors and accounted for 54.2% of the variance of self care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Conclusion: Self-efficacy and illness perception were influencing factors in self care among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Hence further interventional researches are needed that consider these two variables.

  • This study was conducted because of the investigator's concern for the high incidence and fatal nature of cancer in prime years of human life. The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors on compilance for preventive health behavior of cancer. The data on which the analysis was based come from a survey of 828 married men & women, 40-59 years old. The instrument of the study were 'Health Belief Model' by Becker. The Data was analyzed using X--test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiple Regression. The followings were the result; 1. The examined group had a higher scores than the non-examined group in health belief variables. (p<0.001) 2. The higher level of health belief variables, the higher level of compliance for preventive health behavior is. (p<0.001) 3. The Stepwise Multiple Regression of compliance for preventive health behavior on the variables in the health belief model; Approximataly 65.5% of the variance of compliance for preventive health behavior was accounted for by health concern, susceptibility and barriers in combination. This meant that other factors seemed to influence preventive health behavior since the linear combination of variables failed to explain the remaining 34.5% of preventive health behavior of cancer. It tended to cost doubt on the usefulness of 5 variables in this model. Therefore further study to investigate the influential factors preventive health behavior of cancer is necessary.

  • Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with depression of middle school students in relation to self-esteem, type A behavior pattern, and locus of control. Methods: A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 309 middle school students. The data analysis procedure included frequency distribution, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using depression as the dependent variable. Results: The prevalence of depression was 27.2%. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that the factors such as self-esteem(${\beta}$=0.422, p<0.001), type A behavior pattern(${\beta}$=0.166, p<0.001), and locus of control(${\beta}$=-0.165, p<0.001) turned out to be significant affecting factors. Forty nine percent of variance in depression was explained by these factors(40% of variance by self-esteem). Conclusions: The findings suggest that personal internalizing variables should be considered when developing mental health education program to prevent the occurrence of depression for middle school students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of end-of-life care competency; knowledge, attitudes, and experiences regarding advance directives; perceptions of good death; and end-of-life care obstacles and supportive behaviors among tertiary care nurses. Methods: The participants were 150 nurses at a tertiary hospital in Jinju, Korea. The data collected using a questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression in SPSS for Windows version 24.0. Results: The mean (±SD) score of end-of-life care competency was 3.63 (±0.53) on a 5-point scale. A significant difference in end-of-life care competency was found according to whether nurses had experienced the death of a family member or acquaintance (P=0.029). According to stepwise multiple regression analysis, the factors affecting end-of-life care competency were the frequency of end-of-life care supportive behaviors (β=0.38, P<0.001), experience with advance directives (β=0.29, P<0.001), and marriage (β=0.15, P=0.039). This model had an explanatory power of 27.9% (F=18.87, P<0.001). Conclusion: In order to improve nurses' end-of-life care competency, it is important to strengthen end-of-life care supportive behaviors by exposing nurses to those behaviors and providing frequent experience with advance directives.
