  • In this paper, we present simulation results of Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) to a Once-through boiler steam temperature. In order to control the steam temperatures, we choose spray and damper as two input variables. Then, the step response model is generated for the two major output variables by step test. After that, on-line optimization is performed using $(2\times2)$ step response model. Proposed controller is applied to the APESS (Doosan company's boiler model simulator) and the simulation results show satisfactory performance of proposed control.

  • Estimating the first order plus time delay model on the basis of the step responses has been widely used in industry for the tuning of PID controllers. Even though various model identification methods from simple graphical approaches to complicated approaches based on least squares method have been proposed, simple approaches to incorporate noisy step responses are rarely available. In this research, we will compare and analyze recent approaches using the integrals of the step responses and develop an improved identification method to incorporate real situations more effectively.

  • In this study, a 2-step stamping model with an additional 1st stamping tool is proposed to reduce stamping flaws in the curved parts of a dimple in a nuclear fuel spacer grid. First, the strains of curved part of dimple are characterized via a comparison with strain solutions in pure bending. A reference 2D finite element (FE) model of 1-step stamping is then established, and the corresponding maximum strain is obtained. By varying the values of design variables of the 1st stamping tool in the 2-step stamping model, FE solutions are obtained to express the strain as a function of process variables, which provides the optimum values of process variables. Finally, applying these optimum values to a 3D FE model, we demonstrate the enhanced formability of the proposed 2-step stamping model.

  • Asking sensitive questions by a direct survey method causes non-response bias and response bias. Non-response bias arises from interviewees refusal to respond and response bias arises from giving incorrect responses. To rectify these biases, Warner (1965) introduced a randomized response model which is an alternative survey method for socially undesirable or incriminating behavior questions. The randomized response model is a procedure for collecting the information on sensitive characteristics without exposing the identity of the respondent. Many survey researchers have proposed diverse variants of the Warner randomized response model and applied their model to collect the information of sensitive questions. Using an optimal allocation, we proposed three-stage stratified randomized response technique which is an extension of the Kim and Elam (2005) two-stage stratified randomized response technique. In this study, we showed that the estimator based on the proposed response model is more efficient than Kim and Elam (2005). But by adding one more survey step to the Kim and Elam (2005), our proposed model may have relatively less privacy protection compared to the Kim and Elam (2005) model.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of arts-engineering interdisciplinary education for improving creativity-convergence thinking. Using response data from 263 participants who attended an arts-energy extracurricular program at K University, we applied Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Model for analysis, and used Excel 2018, SPSS 25.0, and Process macro 4.0 software programs. The main findings are as following: (a) Overall means for STEP1: program satisfaction (M=4.43), STEP2: understanding of the program (M=4.52), STEP3: increased interest in energy (M=4.26), and STEP4: expansion of creativity-convergence thinking (M=4.41) were high, indicating effective learning outcomes. (b) While STEP1 did not differ significantly, males showed significantly higher in STEP2 and STEP3 compared to females. Additionally, males and STEM learners was significantly higher in STEP4 than non-STEM learners. (c) STEP1 had a positive effect on STEP2, and STEP3 had a positive effect on STEP4, but STEP2 did not have an effect on STEP3, failing to support the assumption of serial causality in Kirkpatrick's model. STEP1, STEP2, and STEP3 had positive effects on STEP4 directly. STEP2 or STEP3 mediated the relationships between STEP1 and STEP4 respectively. However, STEP2 and STEP3 did not serially mediate the relationships between STEP1 and STEP4. Based on these findings, discussions were held, and implications for academia and practice in the fields of engineering and science education were provided.

  • The objective of this research was to create a new probiotic candy with good flavor and healthy benefits by using the response surface method and a sequential quadratic programming technique. The endpoint was to increase the varieties of dairy products and enhance their market values. In this study, milk was mixed with yogurt cultures (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus) and probiotics (L. paracasei, Bifidobacterium longum) and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 20 h. The samples were blended with lyoprotectants (galactose, skim milk powder and sucrose), freeze dried and then mixed with sweeteners (lactose and xylitol) to improve the texture for forming tablets. The processing conditions were optimized in two steps: the first step constructed a surface model using response surface methodology; the second step optimized the model with a sequential quadratic programming procedure. Results indicated that skim milk inoculated with L. delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus, S. thermophilus, L. paracasei subsp. paracasei and B. longum and blended with 6.9% of galactose, 7.0% of sucrose and 8.0% of skim milk powder would produce a new probiotic candy with the highest viability of probiotics and good flavor. A relatively higher survival of probiotics can be achieved by placing the probiotic candy product in a glass bottle with deoxidant and desiccant at $4^{\circ}C$. These probiotic counts remained at 106-108 CFU/g after being stored for two months.

  • Polymer actuators, which are also called as smart materials, change their shapes when electrical, chemical, thermal, or magnetic energy is applied to them and are useful in wide variety of applications such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), machine components, and artificial muscles. For this study, Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator that is one of electroactive polymer actuators was prepared. Since the nonlinear phenomena of hysteresis and a step response are essential considerations for practical use of polymer actuators, we have investigated the movement of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator and have developed an integrated model that can be used for simulating and predicting the hysteresis and a step response during actuation. The Preisach hysteresis model, one of the most popular phenomenological models of hysteresis, were used for describing the hysteretic behavior of Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator while the ARX method, one of system identification techniques, were used for modeling a step response. In this paper, we first expain details in preparation of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer then present the mathematical description of our model, the extraction of the parameters, simulation results from the model, and finally a comparison with measured data.

  • The work presented here deals with controller design by graphical method based on proportional control ramp response. The design aims at the improvement of transient response, disturbance rejection capability, steady-state error reduction with stability preservation. The first step is to generate tracking-error curve with proportional control only and decide the added error signal shape on the error curve. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is confirmed through the simulation and experiment.

  • In this wort ER(electro-rheological) clutch and MR(magneto-rheological) clutch are devised and their performance characteristics such as response time and controllability are compared. As a first step, field-dependent yield stresses of ER and MR fluids are distilled in shear mode. For reasonable comparison between two clutches, a nondimensional design model is established by choosing same design parameters of gap size and number. Following the manufacturing of two clutches, field-dependent torque level, response time to step input, mechanical Power generation to electric power consumption are experimentally measured and compared. In addition, in order to investigate torque controllability of the clutches a sliding mode controller is formulated and experimentally realized. Control bandwidths of two clutches are identified and tracking control responses for desired torque trajectories are presented.
