This paper presents a lateral driver model with neuromuscular system to evaluate the performance of electric power steering (EPS). Output of most previously developed driver models is steering angle. However, in order to evaluate EPS system, driver model which results in steering torque output is needed. The proposed lateral driver model mainly consists of 2 parts: desired steering angle calculation and conversion of steering angle into steering torque. Desired steering angle calculation part results in steering angle to track desired yaw rate for path tracking. Conversion of steering angle into torque is consideration with neuromuscular system. The proposed driver model is investigated via actual driving data. Compared to other algorithms, the proposed algorithm shows similar pattern of steering angle with human driver. The proposed driver can be utilized to efficiently evaluate EPS system in simulation level.
Reducing friction torque of the oil hydraulic vane pump used as the power source of power steering system should consider friction torque including viscous and mechanical friction torque according to the changes of rpm and pressure. This paper analyzes the forces acting on the vane to reduce the friction torque of the vane of the hydraulic vane pump used for Hydraulic Power Steering(HPS) system, and futhermore, the forces according to the shapes of cam profiles are analyzed.

This study proposes and validates a new column type electric power steering system (EPS-TT). It is driven by a uni-directional motor and two electro-magnetic clutches. The assist motor produces assist torque in only one direction and two clutches transmit the torque to the column of steering system in either left or right direction with respect to the steering input. A full order and a reduced order models are developed to evaluate the EPS-TT. Models are also used to investigate the vehicle responses. A PID control logic is designed to control the torque of the assist motor. A driver model is applied to the system and the resulting performances are analyzed. The results show that the performances of the full order model are similar to those of reduced order model. The results also prove that the performances achieved by the EPS-TT are improved compared to those of a conventional EPS-TT across the frequency domain.

Among the automotive steering systems, an Electric Power Assisted steering (EPAS) system utilizes an electronically controlled electric motor to provide steering assistance to the driver. The key components of the EPAS system are torque sensor, ECU (Electronic Control Unit), and DC Motor. The most important component of the EPAS is the torque sensor. The conventional torque sensor has complicated mechanical mechanism of torque detection. However, we suggest a non-contact torque sensor for EPAS using Maluss polarization law. It was found that the sensor exhibited not only excellent linearity but also superior characteristics of hysteresis, temperature and vibration.
We have developed an active front steering system(AFS) with a planetary gear train, which can vary the steering gear ratio according to the vehicle speed and improve vehicle stability by superimposing steering angle. We conducted vehicle tests showing that co-operated control of AFS with ESP can improve vehicle stability by direct control of tire slip angle and that steering reaction torque during AFS intervention can be compensated by torque compensation using electric power steering.

EPS (Electric Power Steering) is important device for improving vehicle's dynamics and static performances. This paper deals with simulator design for C-EPS (Colum type-EPS), development assist and returnability control algorithm. First, C-EPS system model was simply designed because EPS system is complex control system that has many unknown variables. These parameters were simplified through assumptions. Second, C-EPS simulator was designed for development of control algorithm. This simulator has SAS (Steering Angle Sensor), dual torque sensor, dual load cell for measuring rack force, dual linear actuator for generating tire force and Data Acquisition System. Using this simulator, control methods ware tested. Third, control algorithm was designed for torque assist and returnability. Assist torque map and returnability torque map were found by lots of simulation test. These torque maps were tuned for EPS actuator control. The simulation result was compared with non-EPS system result. In this research, the C-EPS simulator was designed for development of control algorithm about torque assistant and returnability. Using this simulator, control algorithm was improved.
MDPS (motor driven power steering) systems have been widely used in vehicles due to their improved fuel efficiency and steering performance when compared to conventional hydraulic steering. However, the reduction of torque ripples and material cost are important issues. A low resolution position sensor for MDPS is one of the candidates for reducing the material costs. However, it may increases the torque ripple due to the current harmonics caused by low resolution encoder signals. In this paper, the torque ripple caused by the quantized rotor position of the low resolution encoder is analyzed. To reduce the torque ripples caused by the quantization of the encoder signals, the rotor position and the speed are estimated by measuring the frequency of the encoder signals. In addition, the compensating q-axis current is added to the current command so that the 6th order torque harmonic is attenuated. The reduction of torque ripples by applying the estimated rotor position and the compensated q-axis current is verified through experimental results.

As the development of microprocessor technology, electric power steering(EPS) system which uses an electric motor came to use a few years ago. It can solve the problems associated with hydraulic power steering. The motor only operates when steering assistance is needed, so it can save fuel and can reduce weight and cost by eliminating hydraulic pump and piping. As one of performance criteria of EPS systems, the transmissibility from road wheel load to steering wheel torque is considered in this paper. The transmissibility can be studied by fixing the steering wheel and calculating the torque needed to hold the steering wheel from road wheel load. A proportion-plus-derivative control is needed for EPS systems to generate desired static torque boost and avoid transmissibility of fluctuation. A pure proportion control can' satisfy both requirements.

In this paper, we develop a sliding mode control for steering wheel angle control based on torque overlay in order to resolve the problem of previous methods for Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems in the Lane Keeping System (LKS) of autonomous vehicles. For the controller design, we propose a 2nd order model of the electric power steering system in an autonomous LKS. The desired state model is designed to prevent a rapid change of the steering wheel angle. The sliding mode steering wheel angle controller is developed for the robustness of the disturbance. Since the proposed method is designed based on torque overlay, torque integration with basic functions of the EPS system for the steering wheel angle control is available for the driver's convenience. The performance of the proposed method was validated via experiments.
This paper deals with a control method to reduce the torque ripple of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric power steering (EPS) systems. Such an application requires a very low torque ripple in order to maintain a good steering feel. However, because of spatial limitations, it cannot help having a partial saturation in the iron core of the PMSM for an EPS system, and this saturation results in a significant torque ripple. Thus, this paper analyzes the torque ripple caused by the magnetic saturation of a PMSM and proposes a method with respect to inductance measurement to verify the partial saturation. In addition, it is shown that a compensation current is needed in order to minimize the torque ripple when a PMSM is driven in the high torque region. The estimation process of the current and the torque ripple decreased by the current are presented and verified with test results.
