Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of convergent nozzle. The objective of the present study is to understand the flow characteristics of the spiral jet, using a computational method. A finite volume scheme is used to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The computational results are validated by the previous experimental data. It is found that the spiral jet is generated by coanda effect at the inlet of the convergent nozzle and its fundamental features are dependent the pressure ratio of the radial flow through the annular slit and the coanda wall curvature.
The feasibility of treating three softwood(Japanese larch pitch pine, and Korean pine) thinned logs by double-diffusion treatment processes was investigated. Some posts were incised before immersion, and others were imersed in hot copper sulfate solution. Comparison among species indicated that. in general, pitch pine was most treatable and Japanese larch least treatable. For all three species, almost all treatment schedules gave consistently good penetration and high net retention, but very steep gradient of preservative distribution. As expected, the treatability was increased by the extension of immersion time, increased concentration of treating solution, incising. and heating of the first solution. Of the variables tested, it appears that heating of the first solution is the most important. From the data in this paper, it may be concluded that, if the first solution is not heated, the best schedule is #3. If the first solution is healed. it appears the best schedules are #10 or #11. Since heating of the first solution improves the treatability. schedules # 10 or :#11 are recommended if the cost of heating might be justified. The data presented in this paper indicate that double-diffusion treatment processes seem to offer a promise as a comparatively effective and easy-operating method of treating thinned logs for the small-scale production of treated stock.

In order to investigate the effects of an electric field on EHD(Electro-hydrodynamic) nucleate boiling hat transfer characteristics in a nonuniform electric field under saturated pool boiling, the basic study has been performed experimentally. In the present study, the working fluid is R-113 and the plate-wire electrode system is used to generate a steep electric field gradient. Boiling parameters are investigated by using a high speed camera. The electric field distribution around a wire is obtained to understand the effect of an electric field on bubble departure/movement. The experimental results show EHD effects are much more considerable when the applied voltage increases. Bubbles depart away from the heated wire in radial direction. It is confirmed that the mechanisms of EHD nucleate boiling are closely connected with the dynamic behavior of bubbles. The boiling parameters are significantly changed by the electric field strength. With increasing applied voltages, the bubble size decreases and the nucleation site density, bubble velocity and bubble frequency increase.
In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.

This study was carried out from January 1998 to December 1999 to report the revegetation of cutting-rock slopes and a design standard in the highway cut-slopes. The field data was collected from the 67 sites cutting-rock slopes of highways, local roads, and field test. As the result of analyze, cutting-rock slopes revegetation measures were 16 types. There were Vine planting(3 types), Hydroseeding measures with seed-fertilizer-soil materials(5 types), Vegetaion-base spraying measures(5 types), and Stability measures(3 types). The factors affecting the plant coverage rates of cutting-rock slopes were the slope gradient, the slope width and direction. The plant coverage rate decreases in the condition of steep slope and long slope width and length(height). In addition, the plant coverage rates of the westward and southward were lower than that of the northward and eastward. Most dominant species were Zoysia japonica, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, Lespedeza cuneata, Rubus crataegifolius, Miscanthus sinensis, Arrundinella hirta, Themeda triandra, and Oenothera odorata. Exotic species were Eragrostis curvula(Weeping lovegrass), Dactylis glomerata Orchardgrass), Lolium perenne(Perennial ryegrass), and Festuca arundinacea(Tall fescue). It is recommended to adjust the proposed factor as environment, topsoil, classification of rock, field condition and characteristic related with revegetation measures on slopes for the presentation of revegetation standard.

In this study the structure of a two phase detonation has been numerically investigated through the assumption of a steady and one-dimensional flow in the suspension of carbon particles and pure oxygen. The bow shock formation in front of carbon particles has been taken into consideration when the relative velocity of gas flow with respect to the particle exceeds the local speed of sound. But its effect was found to be very limited to the induction zone only. Furthermore the interior particle temperature distribution has been considered in this work. It was found that the inner temperature gradient was very steep in the region of high relative velocity. On the while the temperature distribution inside the particle was almost uniform in the region of low relative velocity. Overall, the effect of the interior particle temperature distribution has been significant in the two phase detonation.
In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal ronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. In the application of EOF analysis for SST, the variance of the 1st mode was 97.6%. Temporal components showed annual variations, and spatial components showed that where it is closer to continents, the SST variations are higher. Temporal components of the 2nd mode presented higher values of 1993, 94 and 95 than those of other years. Although these phenomena were not remarkable, they could be considered ELNI . NO effects to the Korean seas as the time was when ELNI . NO occurred. The Sobel Edge Detection Method (SEDM) delineated four fronts: the Subpolar Front (SPF) separating the northern and southern parts of the East Sea; the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea, the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South Sea, and the Tidal Front (TDF) in the West Sea. TF generally occurred over steep bathymetry slopes, and spatial components of the 1st mode in SST were bounded within these frontal areas. EOF analysis of SST gradient values revealed the temporal and spatial variations of the TF. The SPF and SSCF were most intense in March and October; the KF was most significant in March and May.
The endangered species of Cyathea spinulosa (tree ferns) are among the least concerned ferns of Nepal that bring threats to them and their habitat. A way to reduce such threats is by maintaining a database of species' whereabouts and generating a scientific understanding the habitat preferences. This will eventually help in the formulation of conservation plans for the species. This research aimed to characterize the suitable habitat of C. spinulosa by enumerating the location of species in the Panchase Forests of central Nepal. The statistical index method was applied to relate the occurrence locations of species with various environmental factors for the development of indices. The suitable habitat of C. spinulosa (more and most suitable categories) covered 119 km2 and accounted for 43% of the total area studied. 74.4% of occurrence locations of C. spinulosa were recorded from these habitats. The habitat characteristics suitable for C. spinulosa were: proximity to streams (high moisture), land covered by forested area (shady area), mid-elevations of hills about 1,000 m to 2,000 m (sub-tropical climate), slope gradient of 20° to 40° (steep slopes), and northern to eastern aspects. These habitat characteristics could be considered for in-situ protection of tree ferns and designating the conservation plots.

The alarming climate change impacts are demanding the use of renewable energy sources like never before. Hydropower is one of the most cost-effective and environmental friendly energy technology recognized in the world. Big hydropower projects come up with the requirements of huge investment costs along with environmental impacts, whereas small hydropower(SHP) are considered a best solution for the economical source of energy. SHP, basically Run-of-River (RoR) type plants can be sustainable renewable energy sources and given the nature of perennial rivers flowing from steep gradient and rugged topography, feasibility of such plants is equally high in Nepal. The objective of this study is to determine the primary potential sites for the development of RoR type SHP sites using Geo-spatial Information System(GSIS). The use of GSIS enables precise survey of large area within a short period of time. This study has focused on the determination of locations by establishing defined criterions and methodologies and hence have located multiple locations rather than selecting one best location. The approach is applicable for the rapid initial screening of potential locations and results can facilitate detail feasibility study for the technical and economic analysis of SHP in the basin.
Quantifying the amount of carbon pools in forest ecosystems enables to understand about various carbon pools in the forest ecosystem. Therefore, this study was conducted in the Chilimo dry afromontane forest to estimate the amount of carbon stored. The natural forest was stratified into three forest patches based on species composition, diversity, and structure. A total of 50 permanent sample plots of 20 m × 20 m (400 ㎡ ) each were established, laid out on transects of altitudinal gradients with a distance of 100 m between plots. The plots were measured twice in 2012 and 2017. Tree, deadwood, mineral soil, forest floor, and stump data were collected in the main plots, while shrubs, saplings, herbaceous plants, and seedling data were sampled inside subplots. Soil organic carbon (SOC %) was analyzed following Walkely, while Black's procedure and bulk density were estimated following the procedure of Blake (Methods of soil analysis, 1965). Aboveground biomass was calculated using the equation of Chave et al. (Glob Chang Biol_20:3177-3190, 2014). Data analysis was made using RStudio software. To analyze equality of means, we used ANOVA for multiple comparisons among elevation classes at α = 0.05. The aboveground carbon of the natural forest ranged from 148.30 ± 115.02 for high altitude to 100.14 ± 39.93 for middle altitude, was highest at 151.35 ± 108.98 t C ha-1 for gentle slope, and was lowest at 88.01 ± 49.72 t C ha-1 for middle slope. The mean stump carbon density 2.33 ± 1.64 t C ha-1 was the highest for the middle slope, and 1.68 ± 1.21 t C ha-1 was the lowest for the steep slope range. The highest 1.44 ± 2.21 t C ha-1 deadwood carbon density was found under the middle slope range, and the lowest 0.21 ± 0.20 t C ha-1 was found under the lowest slope range. The SOCD up to 1 m depth was highest at 295.96 ± 80.45 t C ha-1 under the middle altitudinal gradient; however, it was lowest at 206.40 ± 65.59 t C ha-1 under the lower altitudinal gradient. The mean ecosystem carbon stock density of the sampled plots in natural forests ranged from 221.89 to 819.44 t C ha-1. There was a temporal variation in carbon pools along environmental and social factors. The highest carbon pool was contributed by SOC. We recommend forest carbon-related awareness creation for local people, and promotion of the local knowledge can be regarded as a possible option for sustainable forest management.
