  • Composite panel refers to the particular plywood produced in a way of stacking the different kinds of material in sandwich form and adhering them using adhesives and is widely used as building material for its constructability and cost efficiency. But as the surface is finished with steel plate, fire extinguishing agent cannot reach to the core material because of such steel plate on surface which causes the difficulties in suppressing the fire as well as in fire-fighting activities due to collapse. This study, to deal with such problem, is intended to set the fire pipe in core material to prevent the fire from spreading and in a bid to achieve this using minimized fire water, water supply test device was fabricated to estimate the required water flow of fire extinguisher and consequently, optimal water flow (0.5 L/min) was determined through a full-scale fire test.

  • Metal transfer behavior of three shielded metal arc welding electrodes, AWS El1018, E6013 and E6010, were investigated through the characterization of size distribution of droplets and measurement of arc voltage signals. Of the three electrodes, Ell018 electrode showed the largest droplet size with the smallest amount of spatter, while E6010 electrode showed the smallest droplet size with the largest amount of spatter. Even though Ell0l8 electrode showed a good agreement between the frequencies of voltage drop in FFT processed voltage signals and the transfer rate of droplets, E6013 and E6010 electrodes showed weaker correlation because of their dominant explosive transfer behavior. The type of cathode used and electrode baking time also influenced the metal transfer behavior. Compared to bead-on-plate welding using steel plate as a cathode, welding on a water-cooled copper pipe showed less short-circuiting and higher melting rate in all electrodes because of higher arc potential and/or anode drop. When baked for a long time, E6010 electrode showed much more stable arc with less short-circuiting and explosion due to the loss of gas formation ingredients.

  • The crack of concrete induced by the heat of hydration is a serious problem, particularly in concrete structures such as underground box structure, mat-slab of nuclear reactor buildings, dams or large footings, foundations of high rise buildings, etc.. As a result of the temperature rise and restriction condition of foundation, the thermal stress which may induce the cracks can occur. Therefore the various techniques of the thermal stress control in massive concrete have been widely used. One of them is prediction of the thermal stress, besides low-heat cement which mitigates the temperature rise, pre-cooling which lowers the initial temperature of fresh concrete with ice flake, pipe cooling which cools the temperature of concrete with flowing water, design change which considers steel bar reinforcement, operation control and so on. The objective of this paper is largely two folded. Firstly we introduce the cracks control technique by employing low-heat cement mix and thermal stress analysis. Secondly it show the application condition of the cracks control technique like sidewall of LNG in Inchonl.

  • To enhance thermal efficiency of thermal facility through recovery of low and medium temperature waste heat, 1MW organic Rankine cycle system was designed and developed. The exhaust gases of $175^{\circ}C$ at two 100MW power plants in pohang steel works were selected as the representative of low and medium temperature waste heat in industrial process for the heat source of the organic Rankine cycle system. HCFC-123, a kind of harmless refrigerant, was chosen as the working fluid for Rankine cycle. The organic Rankine cycle system with selected exhaust gases and working fluid was designed and constructed. From the operation, it was confirmed that the organic Rankine cycle system is available for low and medium temperature waste heat recovery in industrial process. The optimum operating manuals, such as heat-up of hot water, turbine start-up, and the process of electric power generation, were derived. However, electric power generated was not 1MW as designed but only 670kW. It is due to deficiency of pump capacity for supply of HCFC-123. So it is necessary to increase the pump capacity or to decrease the pressure loss in pipe for more improved HCFC-123 supply.

  • This study presents a thermal device specially designed for thermal nanoimprint lithography equipments, which requires the capability of rapid heating and cooling, high temperature uniformity and the material strength to endure high stamping pressure. The proposal to meet these requirements is a planar-type hot plate extensible to a large area, in which long circular cartridge heaters and heat pipes are installed inside in parallel. The heat pipes are connected to the outside water cooling chamber. A hot plate made of stainless steel is fabricated with a dimension $240mm{\times}240mm{\times}20mm$. Laboratory experiments are conducted to examine the thermal performance of the hot plate. The results illustrate that the employment of heat pipes leads to a notable enhancement of temperature uniformity in the device and provides an efficient heat delivery from the hot plate to outside. It is verified that the suggested hot plate could be a feasible thermal tool for thermal nanoimprint lithography, satisfying the major design requirements.

  • Heating pipes, which are among the main equipment in district heating systems, can be classified into supply and return pipes. Because when the district heating transmission pipe, which is charged with district heating in small to medium-size cities, is under thermal stress during temperature variances in heating water, it suffers from the fatigue phenomenon caused by the thermal stress, according to the number of its service years. District heatingpipes have shown various characteristics according to the operating condition of the service connections, and the irregular temperature variance has had a bad influence on fatigue heating pipes. Therefore, in this study, a field test on laid heating pipes was performed, and the data for each region were analyzed. Also, the fatigue safety of district heating pipes was evaluated via cycle-based evaluation and stress-based evaluation.

  • Biological corrosion, a crucial aspect of metal degradation, has received limited attention despite its significance. It involves the deterioration of metals due to corrosion processes influenced by living organisms, including bacteria. Soil represents a substantial threat to pipeline corrosion as it contains chemical and microbial factors that cause severe damage to water, oil, and gas transmission projects. To combat fouling and corrosion, corrosion inhibitors are commonly used; however, their production often involves expensive and hazardous chemicals. Consequently, researchers are exploring natural and eco-friendly alternatives, specifically nano-sized products, as potent corrosion inhibitors. This study aims to environmentally synthesize silver nanoparticles using an extract from Lagoecia cuminoides L and evaluate their effectiveness in preventing biological corrosion of buried pipes in soil. The optimal experimental conditions were determined as follows: a volume of 4 ml for the extract, a volume of 4 ml for silver nitrate (AgNO3), pH 9, a duration of 60 minutes, and a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius. Analysis using transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 28 nm, while X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited suitable peak intensities. By employing the Scherer equation, the average particle size was estimated to be around 30 nm. Furthermore, antibacterial studies revealed the potent antibacterial activity of the synthesized silver nanoparticles against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. This property effectively mitigates the biological corrosion caused by bacteria in steel pipes buried in soil.

  • A suction bucket foundation, especially useful at depths of more than 20m, is a method of construction. The method first places an empty upturned bucket at the target site. Then, the bucket is installed by sucking water or air into it to create negative pressure. For stability, it is crucial to secure the verticality of the bucket. However, inclination by the bucket may occur due to sea-bottom conditions. In general, a repeated intrusion-pulling method is used for securing verticality. However, it takes a long time to complete the job. In this paper, we propose a real-time suction bucket verticality monitoring system. Specifically, the system consists of a sensor unit that collects raw verticality data, a controller that processes the data and wirelessly transmits the information, and a display unit that shows verticality information of a circular steel pipe. The system is implemented using an inclination sensor and an embedded controller. Experimental results show that the proposed system can efficiently measure roll/pitch information with a 0.028% margin of error. Furthermore, we show that the system properly operates in a suction bucket-based model experiment.

  • This study examined the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of J55 line pipe steel. The experiments were carried out at under the following various conditions: austenization temperature($880^{\circ}C$, $910^{\circ}C$, $940^{\circ}C$), cooling methods(water quenching, oil quenching) and tempering temperature(none, $550^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$). The phase diagram and CCT curve were simulated based on the chemical composition of J55 steel to predict the microstructures. In the results, A1, A3 temperature decreased. As the austenization temperature increased, existing austenite grains grew exponentially which seriously degraded their mechanical properties. Various microstructures, including martensite, bainite, ferrite, and pearlite, developed in accordance with the heat treatments and were closely correlated with hardness, tensile strength and toughness. Martensite was formed after water quenching, but bainite and ferrite appeared after oil quenching. FeC precipitation formed and coarsened during tempering, which improved their toughness.
