  • LNG (liquefied natural gas) is considered the best alternative eco-fuel, and many studies on the LNG fuel system have been performed to use LNG as the fuel for ships. For the LNG fuel supply system, natural gas transfers from the vaporizer to the engine in the gaseous state with a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ and a pressure of 35MPa. Therefore, a structural safety evaluation of the double-walled pipelines considering thermal load is essential. In this article, an uniaxial tensile test for super duplex stainless steel, material for double-walled pipe, according to the annealing time was carried out to analyze the thermal effect. In addition, thermo-structural analysis of the high temperature-high pressure double-walled pipe with fixed supports that are now used widely was carried out to evaluate the structural safety. To minimize stress concentration of the connection point between the support and inner pipe, the shapes of the new type support that can slip through inner pipe were proposed, and the supports which has best structural performance was selected using the results from the thermo-structural analyses of new supports and an analysis of the whole double-walled pipeline was performed to ensure structural safety. These results can be used as a database for the design of double-walled pipelines and sliding support.

  • The oxidation/degradation efficiency of formic acid through the photoelectrochemical reaction has been investigated as a basic research in order to develope the process for degrading toxic organic compounds dissolved in water. A $TiO_{2}$ photoelectro-membrane reactor for purification of water, in which filtration as well as photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds could be carried out simultaneously, was developed. Porous $SnO_{2}$ tubes prepared by slip casting and commercial porous stainless steel tubes, being electrically conductive, were used as not only supports but also working electrodes. The UV light with the wavelength of 365 nm was applied as a light source for photocatalytic reactions. The photoelectrocatatytic composite membranes were prepared by coating the support surface with the $TiO_{2}$ sol of pH 1.45. The oxidation efficiency of formic acid increased with the reaction time and the applied voltage, but was almost independent of the solution flux. The results showed that more than 90% of formic acid could he dograded at 27V using the $TiO_{2}$/stainless steel composite membrane, while about 77% in case of the $TiO_{2}/SnO_{2}$ Composite membrane. It was also concluded that the oxidation efficiencies of formic acid could be significantly improved by about 6~7 times by the photoelectrochemical reaction in comparison with those by the photocatalytic reaction only.

  • Generally, the steel rigid frame has been analyzed using finite element analysis tools. While many efforts have been poured into the understanding and accurate prediction for the nonlinear behavior of the columns and beam-columns connections, the base of the columns are modeled as simply hinged or fixed. However, the base of the steel columns practically is neither fixed not hinged. It behaves as semi-rigid. In this paper, the supports of the columns we modeled as semi-rigid and the importance of such approach in moment-resisting columns is evaluated. Two typical buildings designed by the US specification are modeled and analyzed by the finite element based on stiffness method and flexibility method. The column bases of three-story buildings are modeled as rotational springs with a varying degree of stiffness and strength that simulates the semi-rigidity of the base. Depending on the degree of stiffness and strength, the semi-rigidity varies from the hinged to the fixed. Buildings with semi-rigid column bases behaves similarly to the building with fixed bases. It has been numerically observed through the pushover and nonlinear time history analyses that the decrease of the stiffness of the column base induces the rotational demand on the int air beams. an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanists Due often to the construction and environmental effects, undesired reduction of column base stiffness may cause an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanism.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of high-strength lattice girders as a possible superior alternative to conventional steel arch ribs. For this purpose, the structural characteristics of supports were analyzed using numerical analysis, and their performance was evaluated using maximum bending load tests and tensile tests of the welded joint. According to the results of structural analysis, the optimum size of the upper and lower members and plates is 50 mm × 31.8 mm × 25.4 mm, demonstrating excellent functionality and economic efficiency. High-strength lattice girders of dimensions 55 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm and 85 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm, determined from bending load tests, are found to meet both the reference values and the target values of H-profiles 100 and 125. A review of the ratio of theoretical deflection to actual deflection shows that the high-strength lattice girder developed during this study meets fewer than five of the evaluation criteria for lattice girder deflections proposed by the Federal Railway Department of Germany. Finally, tensile test results reveal that the welded joint of the high-strength lattice girder at the main steel bar-auxiliary steel bar-plate junction exceeds the target value, indicating that the welded joint has sufficient stability.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the $P-{\Delta}$ effect in the case of weak beam unbraced frames by experimental approach. To evaluate $P-{\Delta}$ effect, four specimens were tested under monotonic loading condition. The parameters of tests are the stiffness of column and the axial load ratio. The results show that the value of axial load affects frame stability because $P-{\Delta}$ effects promote the yielding of beam. The maximum lateral load increases in proportion to the increment of column stiffness and rotational stiffness of supports, The collapse mechanism of weak beam unbraced frames is stably formed in the condition of low axial load ratio. The $B_2$ factor of limit state design code does not properly consider the $P-{\Delta}$ effect in inelastic region.

  • Wind tunnel test results and their interpretations, which were performed to study the aerodynamic stability of tower of self-anchored suspension bridge, are presented in this paper. Tower and full models were tested under smooth and turbulent flow conditions. In the case of the tower with inclined two columns, the vibration due to wakes were occurred at wide velocity zone because the wakes with various frequencies were generated by inclined upstream column. It has to be emphasized that the vibration characteristics of the tower in the self-anchored suspension bridge may be very sensitive to the longitudinal boundary conditions of the girder at the supports. Because of the two natural frequency of the tower, out-of-plane bending and torsional, were not well separated, coupled motions were observed in a wide range of wind velocity. The effectiveness of corner cut, countermeasure to reduce the tower vibrations, was also studied. It has been found that 1:10, comer cut size to column width, may be the most effective ratio for reducing the vibrations.

  • A Modern Rock TBM is a tunnel excavation method combining the conventional tunnelling method with the mechanized tunnelling method. It is a hybrid system that excavates a tunnel with TBM and supports the ground by ring beam, wire mesh, rock bolt, shotcrete, i.e., conventional tunnelling method. In the Modern Rock TBM, a ring beam is similar to a steel rib in NATM in the way that uses H-beam. But using a ring beam is more effective than a steel rib because it is installed in a closed-circle. Therefore, improving the performance of the ring beam is a key factor for achieving tunnel stability. In this respect, this study introduces a pressurized ring beam that might be functioning more effectively by confining convergence during tunnel excavation. In order to verify the effect of the pressurized ring beam, a three-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted. The numerical analysis confirms an increase in the minimum principal stress and reduction in the plastic strain that triggers excessive displacement. The analysis result also indicates a decrease in the relative displacement occurring after installing the ring beam, and expansion in spacing between the ring beams.

  • As the ambient vibration test (AVT) of railway bridges has a limited range of speed, it has a limitation in examining the dynamic behavior of bridges accordingto speed. Thus, in order to analyze the correlation between the speed of a train passing over a bridge and the bridge's dynamic response, we conducted a speed-increasing experiment using a real diesel locomotive. To analyze the acceleration response characteristics, we attached seven vertical accelerometers at equal intervals throughout the entire section of the bridge except the supports, and one horizontal accelerometer to the middle span. Linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) were installed at the bridge's center in both vertical and horizontal directions to investigate the vertical and horizontal behaviors. The test train was statically loaded at the center and at the end of the bridge. And its speed was increased from 5 km/h to 90 km/h. With data obtained from the experiment, the vibration level was evaluated in each direction by the filtering frequency, and the level of horizontal vibration was examined in comparison with vertical vibration. The displacement and wheel load variation was analyzed by speed.

  • A porous stainless steel (SUS) as a substrate of silica composite membranes for hydrogen purification was used to improve mechanical strength of the membranes for industrial application. The SUS support was successfully modified by using submicron Ni powder, $SiO_2$ sols with particle size of 500 nm and 150 nm in turns. Silica top layer was coated on the modified supports under various preparation conditions such as calcination temperature, dipping time and repeating number of dipping-drying process. The calcination temperature for proper sintering was between H ttig temperature and Tamman temperature of the coating materials. Maximum hydrogen selectivity was investigated by changing dipping time. As repeating number of dipping-drying process increased, permeances of nitrogen and hydrogen were decreased and $H_2/N_2$ selectivity was increased due to the reduction of non-selective pinholes and mesopores. For the silica membrane prepared under optimized conditions, permeance of hydrogen was about $3\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^3{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}cmHg^{-1}$ combined with $H_2/N_2$ seletivity of about 20.

  • This study presents a design method for three-span continuous preflex composite girder bridges (3S-PCB) which imposes prestresses in the negative moment region by lifting or lowering interior supports and the design method is automated by a computer program which incorporates optimal design procedure. The objective function for the design of 3S-PCB minimizes the cost of construction materials and the constraint functions represent the limited dimensions of the design section and the allowable stress for each structural member as given in the specifications. Optimal design procedure used in this study is a modification of existing sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT), a numerical analyses procedure for two-span continuous preflex composite bridges. The optimized design sections determined for each span length are compared with those of simple preflex composite beams (SPCB) and the optimal girder depth is determined by defining the relationship between girder depth and construction material costs.
