  • Coal-tar enamel, blown asphalt and polyethylene have been used as wrapping materials of steel pipe in Korea. Currently, every manufacturer produces wrapped steel pipes with different materials and methods, and little research has been performed to get on wrapping methods and materials. In this research, properties of wrapping material of steel pipe used for water supply have been evaluated. All of the materials tested in this work were found to meet the standard. Among the wrapping materials of steel pipe tested, blown asphalt and coal-tar enamel were reasonable in price, and their mechanical properties were excellent. The quality of the wrapped steel pipes was being melted easily in organic solvent. When coated thick, the load of the steel pipes was higher than necessary. Tensile strength of cathode exfoliation and PE 3-layer wrapping method was excellent. The pulling intensity of T-Die PE 3-layer was stronger than PE fluidized in PE wrapping method. Cathode exfoliation area was smaller than PE fluidized. Mechanical property and thermo-property of T-Die PE 3-layer were excellent and its anti-chemical property was great. Liquid epoxy can change the property of coating materials depending on the hardening condition and resin selection. Polyurethane used in this test showed a less adhesive strength with steel pipes than epoxy. Moisture absorbance rate was higher than Epoxy's, however. To utilize polyurethane as wrapping materials, basic property of the matter should be improved followed by finding the best suited coating condition. The method of PE 3-layer by extrude method appeared to be the best in this study. However, identification of other wrapping materials requires further additional tests.

  • In this study, as the production of high-strength steel pipes due to the development of steel materials, the stability and applicability of the soil nailing method using high-strength steel pipes were evaluated. Rebars used as reinforcement in the soil nailing method are the same in order to determine the behavioral characteristics and the effect of increasing the reinforcement when replacing it with a high-strength steel pipe of a diameter, a field test were conducted to confirm the stability. As a result of the tensile test, the measured strain is smaller than the strain in the theoretical equation, so it can be seen that the behavior is similar to that of the soil nailing method using rebars. As a result of the displacement measurement, the displacement of the high-strength steel pipe is larger than that of the rebars is considered to be the effect of the internal grouting effect of the steel pipe and the decrease in the cross-sectional area. In the case of using high-strength steel pipes for the soil nailing method, it is judged that the field applicability is good by improving stability and workability through member performance and weight reduction.

  • This paper presents an analytical method, application of expansion, mechanical design, and integrated expansion design of subsea insulated pipe-in-pipe (PIP) systems. PIP system consists of a flowline and a casing pipe for the transport of high temperature and high pressure product from the subsea wells. To prevent heat lass from the fiowline, insulation material is applied between the pipes. The fiawline pipe and the casing pipe have mechanical connections through steel ring plate (water stops) and bulkheads. Pipeline expansion is defined by temperature, internal pressure, soil resistance, and interaction force between the flowline and the casing pipe. The results of the expansion analysis, the mechanical design of connection system of the two pipes and tie-in spool design are integrated for the whole PIP system.

  • The steel pipe for fluid catalytic cracking(FCC) unit. petroleum refinery, is lined with refractory to protect the system from high-temperature of the internal flow. The property of the refractory has an effect upon the stress analysis of FCC unit. Because 1-D pipe element or 3-D shell element are usually used in commercial codes of stress analysis to evaluate the structural soundness, the equivalent elastic modulus considering steel and refractory should be applied. In the research, the theoretical method to obtain the value of the equivalent property is introduced and then the stress analysis is carried out with the part of FCC unit.

  • This study was to evaluate disinfection efficiency of chlorine and chloramine as secondary disinfectants in the distribution systems. Indicator organism, HPC in the suspended and attached were measured for copper, galvanized steel, PVC, and carbon steel pipes. For suspended microorganism, the PVC pipe was markedly dense among the assessed pipe materials. The attached microorganism was markedly equivalent roughness of pipe materials. In copper and galvanized pipes, chloramine was more effective that free chlorine to disinfect suspended microorganism in the contact time of 2 hours. The contact time for the 99% inactivation of suspended microorganism by chloramine was longer than that of free chlorine. Regardless of pipe materials, chloramine was effective on both disinfection efficiency and 99% inactivation time for attached microorganism. In conclusion, chloramine which is good disinfectant for long contact time was recommended as secondary disinfectant in distribution system.

  • With a quasi-three point bending apparatus, ratcheting deformation is studied experimentally on a pressurized austenitic stainless steel Z2CND18.12N pipe under bending load and vertical displacement control, respectively. The characteristic of ratcheting behavior of straight pipe under both control methods is achieved and compared. The cyclic bending loading and internal pressure influence ratcheting behavior of pressurized straight pipe significantly under loading control and the ratcheting characteristics are also highly associated with the cyclic displacement and internal pressure under displacement control. They all affect not only the saturation of the ratcheting strain but the ratcheting strain rate. In addition, ratcheting simulation is performed by elastic-plastic finite element analysis with ANSYS in which the bilinear model, Chaboche model, Ohno-Wang model and modified Ohno-Wang model are applied. By comparison with the experimental data, it is found that the CJK model gives reasonable simulation. Ratcheting boundaries under two control modes are almost same.

  • Ratcheting deformation of pressurized Z2CND18.12N stainless steel $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning subjected to constant internal pressure and reversed bending was studied using finite element analysis. Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model, which was used to simulate ratcheting behavior of pressurized $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados, was implemented into finite element software ANSYS. The local wall thinning was located at extrados, flanks and intrados of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe, whose geometry was rectangular cross-section. The effect of depth, axial length and circumferential angle of local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados on the ratcheting behaviors of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe were studied in this paper. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analysis with Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model was carried out to evaluate structural ratcheting behaviors. The results indicated that ratcheting strain was generated mainly along the hoop direction, while axial ratcheting strain was relatively small.

  • Put Abstract text here The strain distribution measurement for wall thinned pipe bends by ESPI is presented. Defect types observed in the steel piping in the nuclear power plants (NPP) are the crack at the weld part and the wall thinning defect in the pipe bends. Especially, the wall thinning defects in the pipe bends due to the flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) is a main type of defects observed in the carbon steel piping system. ESPI is one of the optical non-destructive testing methods and can measure the stress and the strain distribution of the object subjected by the tensile loading or the internal pressure. In this paper, the strain distribution of the wall thinned pipe bends due to the internal pressure will be measured by ESPI technique and the results are discussed. From the results, the size of the wall thinning defect can also be measured approximately.
