  • Recent experimental research results of connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing are provided based on various experimental observations. It gives a shedding light toward developing better and concrete connection method for steel pipe pile at the field application. In this study, the newly developed method is tested for compressive, pull put and combination load including moment with carefully designed monitoring system. The measured data show that new method have at least equivalent or better load resistant capacities compared with those of specified method in Korea Highway Corporation design code. It is also tried to define and investigate the load transfer mechanism for new method.

  • A steel pile often utilized to bear heavy loads of the upper sub-structure, e. g., bridge constructions and tall buildings. As the steel piles are driven in the underground, it is not easy to detect the depth of the existing pile foundation when there is no detailed foundation information available. However, accurate informations of the depths of piles becomes critical required when reinforcing the existing structures or constructing new ones at the adjacent stage to assure the safety of existing structures. In this study, we tested the applicability of the three components borehole fluxgate magnetometer for detecting the depths and locations of steel piles which are commonly used in civil engineering. Results showed that the information of location as well as the depth of steel piles could be obtained by using data from the three components borehole fluxgate magnetometer.

  • To find the structural characteristics of non-slip device in connecting method B between steel pipe pile and concrete footing, compression and uplift test was performed for full sized specimens not having non-slip device, those having non-slip device with two curved steel plate bars welded inside the steel pipe pile(standard method), and those having non-slip device with serveral curved steel plate bars bolted inside the steel pipe pile(new method). As a result, specimens not having non-slip device had chemical debonding failure at 15.6tonf of peak uplift load and 27.57tonf of peak compression load. And the standard method and the new method showed about 8.9 times of peak uplift load and 6.2 times of peak compression load higher than specimens not having non-slip device. The load transfers of lower non-slip devices of the standard method and the new method were similar in behavior, while the higher non-slip device of the new method showed higher ratio of load transfer than that of the standard method. And these two methods had nearly the same composite action and structural capacity caused by non-slip devices.

  • Although pile driver overturning accidents at construction site are not frequent, most leads to serious disasters. The main cause of accidents is uneven settlement of the ground. To prevent this, related guidelines such as KOSHA-C-101-2014, KOSH-A-GUIDE-71-2012, Occupational Safety and Health Standards, and NCS stipulate the installation of steel plates over ground. However, since the required steel plate thickness considering the self-weight of pile drivers and the underlying ground condition is not quantitatively presented, it is randomly applied in the field. In this study, the required minimum steel plate thickness was analyzed based on a numerical analysis (Plaxis 2D). Settlements and soil failure were calculated according to the different type of soils (sand, clay), load distribution and steel plate thickness (10mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm). Under all conditions, 10mm steel plate causes soil collapse. From thickness 20mm, the ground uneven subsidence is within 2° of the allowable leader angle.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate bending performance of concrete filled soldier pile for temporary retaining wall. Structural performance tests were conducted on total number of four specimens. Each specimen had a unique characteristics with combination of the following variables, existence of reinforcing bar and locations of reinforcing steel plates. The results of this study were as follows; concrete filled steel tubes with being reinforced bar and flange rather than non-bar showed better performance. Higher yield, tensile strength and sufficient plastic strain were archived and maximum moment observed in experiments exceeded theoretical maximum moment in both allowable stress design and limit state design at all specimens.

  • In this study, model pile-load test with numerical analysis was carried out to compare and analyze pile behaviour according to interface properties. In the model test, Close Range Photogrammetry (CRP) was chosen to measure the ground deformation. In addition, model steel and concrete piles were used. Based on the model pile test, interface elements around the model pile were used to simulate the slip effect. Interface properties were adopted as interface reduction factor $R_{inter}$. Interface reduction factor, $R_{inter}$ plays a key role in the interface properties. Through this study, it was found that the model ground behaviour measured by CRP corresponded well to the one predicted by the numerical analysis. And, the interface strength reduction factor, $R_{inter}$ value of the steel pile was higher than that of the concrete pile.

  • In this study, based on the relationship of the vertical force - settlement of batter piles obtained by pressure chamber model tests, the vertical bearing capacity of vertical and batter piles according to the increase of pile inclination was analyzed. A model open - ended steel pipe pile with the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 15$^\circ$ was driven into saturated fine sand with relative density of 50 %, and the static compression load tests were performed under each confining pressure of 35, 70 and 120 kPa in pressure chamber. The vertical bearing capacity of pile obtained from pressure chamber tests increased with the pile inclination. In the case of the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$, 15$^\circ$, increasing ratios of pile bearing capacity were 111, 121, 127 ~ 140 % of vertical bearing capacity respectively. In the case of the inclination of above 20$^\circ$, the model tests could not be performed because of pile of pile head during compressive loading on the pile head.

  • Prefabricated piles used for construction of highway bridges are most of steel pipe piles and few of prestressed concrete piles. Its installation and inspection are less controllable and have much uncertainty due to changes in subsoil and groundwater conditions. However, most of these piles have been controlled using outdated pile driving formula such as Hiley's formula which models just the energy conservation due to its simple applicability in the field. This formula results in overstriking or sometimes understocking due to buckling of pile head. Engineers cannot ensure by the formula whether pile is installed properly. To compensate the drawbacks of excising pile formula, parameters in Hiley's formula and 55 formula are reviewed. Final sets used in pile formula and PDA test results(E.O.I.D) are measured during pile driving along the depth. These measured results along the depth were compared with each other and with N values, so that relations between the each result could be inferred. Also the factor of safety which can be used for pile driving formula are suggested.

  • In this paper, the design procedure of substructure of the steel-type breakwater was described and the actual foundation design was performed for the test bed. The site investigation was executed at the Osan-port area, in Uljin, Gyeongbuk, where the steeltype detached breakwater is constructed. The foundation mainly depends on the lateral load and uplift force due to the wave force. Since the superstructure is stuck out about 9.0m from the ocean bed, the foundation must resist on the lateral force and bending moment. After considering various factors, the foundation type of this structure was determined by the steel pipe pile(${\varphi}711{\times}t12mm$). On the stability of pile foundation, the safety factors of the pile on the compressive, lateral and uplift forces were grater than the minimum factor of safety. The displacements of pile under the working load were evaluated as the values below the permissible ones. Based on the subgrade reaction method, we evaluated the relationship of subgrade reaction and displacement for the lateral and the vertical directions in the layers. The structural analyses along with the foundation were perfomed and the effect of pile foundations were compared quantitatively.
