  • In recent fire protection system, the pipings should be light weighted, seismic proof and wrought with non-welding method. The light weighted stainless steel pipes and fittings, satisfying these requirements, are already used as a fire protection system in Germany, Netherland, Taiwan, Australia, United States and Japan. Accordingly, performance evaluation tests were carried out to determine whether or not the fittings can be used in the pipings. As the performance evaluation tests, we conducted vibration test, water hammering test, bending test and fire test. With the results of the tests, we concluded that the fittings can be used in the fire protection system, and that the life expectancy of the fittings exceeds that of buildings.

  • In this study, characteristics of the fundamental longitudinal guided wave mode, L(0,1), which is a usual mode employed in the inspection of the above-ground pipe, of the buried pipe were numerically investigated considering property changes in the surrounding soil. Results showed that soil conditions are significantly affecting the attenuation of L(0,1) mode in the pipe embedded in soil. Especially, if the soil is partially saturated, the attenuation of L(0,1) mode is larger and is very similar regardless of the degree of water saturation in the surrounding soil. However, when the soil is fully saturated, the attenuation of L(0,1) mode is less and show different trend with its partially saturated counterparts.

  • The thermal performance characteristics of gas-loaded heat pipe(GLHP) were investigated by using transient diffuse-front model. Numerical evaluation of the GLHP is made with water as a working fluid and Nitrogen as control gas in the stainless steel tube. The transient vapor temperature and wall temperature were obtained. It is found that the temperature profiles and gas mole fraction distribution have been mainly influence by the diffusion between working fluid and noncondensable control gas in the condenser of GLHP. It is also found that he large power input make the diffusion region smaller.

  • In this study, management index method has been developed to estimate the level of deterioration, applied to Cheongju city, and compared with the previous estimation methods of deterioration level of water distribution system. From the results, distribution systems of Yullyang, Naedeok1 and Yongam2 are found to be seriously deteriorated. And it was also found that probability of pipe breakage was estimated as 3.21%, 4.64% which is highest level at the steel pipe of 200 mm and 300 mm diameter. It was found that risk degree was estimated as 0.2609, 0.2644 by using management index method in Naedeok1 which is the most dangerous distribution system in the city. It was also found that results of risk analysis by management index method have been similar with the results of safety analysis by reliability method and indirect estimation method of deterioration level. Therefore, newly developed management index method can be applied and may be useful to the estimation of deterioration level for the future maintenance and management of water distribution system.

  • The current conditions of large water mains are evaluated by deteriorations and the causes of deterioration are investigated through visual assessments in the field, mechanical tests and analysis of chemical compositions in laboratory for each pipe material, unlined cast iron pipes (CIPs), ductile iron pipes (DCIPs) and steel pipes (SPs) Tubercles and scales from internal and external corrosion of unlined cast iron pipes were identified as the causes of functional performance limitations in large water mains. It is investigated that main causes of internal and external corrosion of water pipes are from lots of depositions of organic and inorganic substances on pipe surface, concentrated pitting, and uniform corrosion by local or global exfoliation or detachment of lining and coatings of DCIPs and SPs. Internal and external corrosion depths of CIPs were higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. Consequently, total corrosion rate summed internal and external corrosion rates of CIPs also were shown to be higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. The failure time from hole generation of CIPs by total corrosion rate was predicted to be taken sixteen years, and DCIPs and SPs were twenty-six years and one hundred and fifty three years. And longitudinal deflection of investigated water mains were not happened and mechanical strengths such as tensile strength, elongation, and hardness also were mostly suited to Korea Standards. It was thought that the weakness of tensile strength of one sample(S-11) was, however, due to higher carbon contents(%) in CIPs. Pipe deterioration score of S-46 was 55.2 and was preferentially assessed to be rehabilitated.

  • Recently, aluminum pipes have been used instead of steel pipes for open and shut machines in vinyl housing because of its corrosion-resistance and light weight. In particular, the light weight is very useful for fitting and removal by human resources. On the other hand, an aluminum pipe is weak in winter because aluminum has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than steel. This study examined the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by numerical analysis. The mechanical-thermal deformation characteristics were analyzed under the condition of ice volumetric expansion in aluminum pipes reaching 50%. From numerical analysis, large stresses above the yield stress occurred in aluminum pipe after ice expanded in the net diameter immediately. In addition, the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes was predicted around an ice volumetric expansion of 6 - 7% because the thickness of the aluminum pipe reached an aluminum elongation ratio of 17%. Therefore, it is recommended that aluminum pipes be sealed perfectly to prevent water flow in the pipe. These results suggest that it is very difficult to prevent freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by water freezing in the pipe.

  • Since the operation period of nuclear power plants has increased, the degradation of buried pipes gradually increases and recently it seems to be one of the emerging issues. Maintenance on buried pipes needs high quality of management system because outer surface of buried pipe contacts the various soils but inner surface reacts with various electrolytes of fluid. In the USA, USNRC and EPRI have tried to manage the degradation of buried pipes. However, there is little knowledge about the inspection procedure, test and manage program in the domestic nuclear power plants. This paper focuses on the development and build-up of real-time monitoring and control system of buried pipes. Pipes to be tested are tape-coated carbon steel pipe for primary component cooling water system, asphalt-coated cast iron pipe for fire protection system, and pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe for sea water cooling system. A control system for cathodic protection was installed on each test pipe which has been monitored and controlled. For the calculation of protection range and optimization, computer simulation was performed using COMSOL Multiphysics (Altsoft co.).

  • Failure analysis of pre-insulated pipe (SPPS 380, 400A) transporting high temperature water ($95{\sim}110^{\circ}C$) for a plant was carried out. The damaged area (${\Phi}5mm$) of pre-insulated pipe was found only on welds. The chemical composition of damaged pipe meets specification of carbon steel pipes for pressure service (KS D 3562). As results of microstructure analysis, crack propagated from outer to inside after pitting corrosion occurred on the outside surface. The non-metallic inclusion existed on the end of crack. And the non-metallic inclusion continuously and linearly formed along with the bond line of welds. Based on SEM-EDS analysis, the nonmetallic inclusions have higher Manganese (Mn) and Oxygen (O) content but sulfur (S) was not detected. As results of water quality analysis, hydrogen ion concentration and minerals like Fe, Mg, Si were in low level. But the content of dissolved oxygen (11.2 ppm) was slightly higher than that of standard. It seems that the cause of damaged pipe is grooving corrosion due to MnO inclusion formed on bond line and corrosion took place nearby welds.

  • Demand of water is increased according to city centralism phenomenon in population and development. In this progress, guarantee of enough water is important factor for water supply policy. For the detection of exact water leakage point, an epochal sensing technique using computer and internet is required, so, the water pipe having sensing wire and sensing technology using TDR(Time Domain Reflectometer), is proposed in this paper. For the prove of effectiveness of this system, pilot system using 300mm 3-layer coated steel pipe is made and tested.

  • A small-scale loop heat pipe with polypropylene wick was fabricated and tested for its thermal performance. The container and tubing of the system was made of stainless steel and several working fluids were used to see the difference in performance including methanol, ethanol, acetone, R134a, and water. The heating area was 35 mm ${\times}$ 35 mm and there were nine axial grooves in the evaporator to provide a vapor passage. The pore size of the polypropylene wick inside the evaporator was varied from 0.5 m to 25 m. The size of condenser was 40 mm (W) ${\times}$ 50 mm (L) in which ten coolant paths were provided. The inner diameter of liquid and vapor transport lines were 2.0 mm and 4.0 mm, respectively and the length of which were 0.5 m. The PP wick LHP was operated with methanol, acetone, and ethanol normally. R134a was not compatible with PP wick and water was unsuitable within operating limit of $100^{\circ}C$. The minimum thermal load of 10 W (0.8 W/cm2) and maximum thermal load of 80 W (6.5 W/cm2) were achieved using methanol as working fluid with the condenser temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ with horizontal position.
