  • Characterization of microstructures and mechanical properties of 83mm thickness EH36-TM welds produced by the combined flux cored arc (FCA) and electro gas (EG) welding processes has been studied with the two different groove conditions, single-V (SV) and double-V (DV) bevels. The welding consumables used for FCA and EG welding processes were ASME/AWS A5.29 (E81T1-K2) and A5.26 (EG72T), respectively. Experimental results showed that all the mechanical properties of welds such as tensile property, CVN toughness and Vickers hardness met IACS requirements. The tensile strength of EG welded plates were reduced by approximately 4% (DV: 3.8%, SV: 4.2%) compared to the base metal. The hardness value of SV-beveled weld metal was slightly lower than that of DV-beveled one. There were no significant differences as per welding groove conditions except for the weld metal. In addition, at the fusion line, the toughness of SV condition was 20J lower and the weld metal was 40J lower than DV condition, respectively. On the basis of microstructural analysis, grain boundary ferrite (GBF) structures for SV condition were 2 times higher volume fraction than for DV condition and their packet sizes were coarsened to almost double. It was thus suggested that the GBF volume fractions and packet sizes in the weld metal of EH36-TM steel plates are the most important factors affecting the mechanical properties of the combined FCA and EG welded joint. Nevertheless, all the results of welds with both DV and SV conditions were found to be excellent.

  • The object of this study is to experimentally investigate the structural behavior of circular tube column bases under axial loads and to ascertain the test results using elastic numerical analysis. A literature survey was conducted on the AISC design code and a few design formulae. Tests were axially conducted under compressive loads. The thickness of the base plate was the main parameter of the specimens. Nine base plate specimens were used, with thicknesses ranging from 9 millimeters to 35 millimeters. The relationship of the load and the vertical displacement of base plates and the relationship of the load and the strain of the base plates were tested. Ansys version 6.1 was used for the elastic numerical analysis, to ascertain the test results. he test results and the elastic numerical analysis results will be used to suggest design formulae for inelastic numerical analyses that will be conducted later on.

  • This paper presents buckling analysis of the cylindrical shell subjected to axial loads using numerical method. The modeling method, appropriate element type, and number of element are recommended by comparing with analytical solution. Based on the parametric study, buckling stress decreases significantly as the diameter-thickness ratio increases. These results are different from those obtained from buckling analysis of columns. The number of buckling half-wave in circumferential direction decreases as the diameter-height ratio increases. Buckling stress increases 1~2% as the thickness of base plate increases. Therefore the effect of base plate on buckling strength for cylindrical shell can be disregarded. Buckling stress significantly decreases as the amplitude of initial geometric imperfection used for calculating buckling stress is developed and it shows a good agreement with numerical results.

  • Very long life fatigue tests were carried out on 16Mn steel base metal and its welded joint by using the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique. Specimen shapes (round and plate) were considered for both the base metal and welded joint. The results show that the specimens present different S-N curve characteristics in the region of $10^5-10^9$ cycles. The round specimens showed continuously decreasing tendency while plate specimens showed a steep decreasing step and an asymptotic horizontal one. The fatigue strength of round specimen was found higher than plate specimen. The fatigue strength of as-welded joint was 45.0% of the base material for butt joint and 40% for cruciform as-welded joint. It was found that fracture can still occur in butt joint beyond $5{\times}10^6$ cycles. The cruciform joint has a fatigue limit in the very long life fatigue regime ($10^7-10^9$ cycles). Fatigue strength of butt as-welded joint was much higher as compared to cruciform as-welded joint. Improvement in fatigue strength of welded joint was found due to UPT. The observation of fracture surface showed crack mainly initiated from welded toe at fusion areas or geometric discontinuity sites at the surface in butt joint and from welded toe in cruciform joint.

  • Lap joint welding conducts low carbon steel plates using a 2.0kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser beam. The specimen is composed of thin plate of 20 sheets. Process Variables contain two controlled parameters of the laser power and the welding speed. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the lap welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stain-stress behavior, and the hardness of the welded part are investigated. The weld width difference between the top and the bottom because the welding speed is increased. The reason, cooling rate is decreased because of fast welding speed. When the heat input is higher, larger volume of the base metal will melt and the welding heat has longer time to conduct into the bottom from the top. The microstructure and tensile properties of the joints are investigated in order to analyze the effects of heat input on the quality of laser welded specimen. From the results of the investigation, We observe that welding quality is good for the laser power of 1800W, and laser welding speed from 1.8m/min to 2.2m/min.

  • 304 stainless steel plate was colored by hot dip and electrochemical treatment in a solution containing sulphuric and chromic acids. In the process, treatment variables such as operating time and methode were changed. The surface characteristics that changed by the treatment of the samples such as surface composition, oxide film thickness, color, surface roughness and reflectivity were studied. Surface composition was varied as follows. Fe was decreased, but Cr and O were increased. Ni was increased until 20 min, but reveals decreasing tendency as time passed after that. These means the surface film becomes chrome rich oxide phase as the treatment times increase. The thickness of film was about 220 nm at 30 min by dip treatment and it reduced as the treatment times increased. On the other hand, the thickness was about 150 nm at 10 min by electrochemical method and it doesn't increased with time. Surface color changed from metallic white of the base plate to gray, black, red, and green-blue, gradually, as the treating time increased. The reflectivity of colored surface measured by UVVIS-NIR spectrophotometer was reduced from max 38% of basis metal to min 3.5%.

  • In this study, modeling of the CD stud welding system was conducted considering mechanical and electrical components. The electrical components such as arc resistance, cable resistance, capacitance, internal resistance and cable inductance were found to affect the output waveform significantly. The calculated results showed food agreements with the experiment results within 20% error. The main defect of CD stud welding with 1010 steel stud and SS400 steel plate was the void trapped between stud and base metal. The effect of the spring force and stud tip size on void formation was investigated.

  • A study was made to examine the effects of postweld heat treatment(PWHT) on the toughness and microstructures in the weld heat affected zone(HAZ) of Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the weld HAZ. The details between toughness and PWHT of HAZ were studied by impact test, optical microscopy(O.M.), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The decrease of HAZ toughness in single thermal cycle comparing to base plate is ascribed to the coarsed-grain formed by heating to 1350.deg.C. The increase of HAZ toughness in double thermal cycle comparine to single thermal cycle is due to the fine ferrite(.alpha.) grain transformed from austenite(.gamma.)formed by heating to .alpha./.gamma. two phase region. Cu precipitated during aging for increasing the strength of base metal is dissolved during single thermal cycle to 1350.deg.C and is precipitated little on cooling and heating during subsequent weld thermal cycle. It precipitates by introducing PWHT. Thus, the decrease of toughness in triple thermal cycle of $T_{p1}$ = 1350.deg.C, $T_{p2}$ = 800.deg.C and $T_{p3}$ = 500.deg.C does not occur owing to the precipitation of Cu. The behaviors of Cu=precipitates in HAZ is similar to that in base plate. PWHT at 550.deg.C shows highest hardness and lowest toughness, whereas PWHT at 650.deg.C shows reasonable toughness, which improves the toughness of as-welded state.state.

  • Since there are no specifications in Korea regarding the design of steel column baseplates that are subjected to concentric axial load, this paper proposes a more accessible stress design method for baseplates based on AISC specifications and guidelines. Some designs included in this paper were: (1) a full area ofconcrete bearing pressure under normal axial load and subsequent failure in external cantilevers at 0.95 d or 0.8 bf, and (2) a partial area of the pressure under a light axial load and subsequent failure as an internal cantilever model.
