  • New form of base isolators made of steel spring coated with both natural and artficial rubber were manufactured and tested for material properties. Shaking table experiments were performed using a model structure attached with the bearings. The model structure used in the test is a 1/4 scaled steel structure, and earthquake records were used to check the lateral and vertical stability and effectiveness of the isolators. According to the results all three types of isolators turned out to be effective in reducing the acceleration induced by the earthquake vibration.

  • The bonding phenomena and mechanical property of duplex stainless steel during brazing have been investigated. The UNS32550 was used for base metal, and the MBF50 was used for insert metal. Brazing was carried out under the various conditions (brazing temperature : 1473K, 1498K, holding time : 0∼1.8ks). There were various microconstituents in the bonded interlayer because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metal. In the early stage of brazing, BN is formed in the bonded interlayer and base metal near the bonded layer. Cr made is formed in the bonded interlayer. The amount of BN and Cr nitrides decrease with the increase of bonding temperature and holding time. Superior shear strength of 550MPa is obtained by restraining the formation of nitrides. • To study the effect of welding methods on the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior of welded AISI type 316L and 304 austenitic stainless steel, the Slow Strain Rate Technique(SSRT) has been adopted in the boiling 45 wt% $MgCl_2$ solution. The results are as follows. 1) Welded sections are more susceptible than base metal in SCC, and the rank of SCC, and the rasistance in welding method is TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and ARC. 2) The Ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and the strain of both base metal and welded joint are reduced as decreasing extension rate. 3) The SCC resistance of 316L base metal and welded sections are superior than that of 304. 4) The tendency of pitting and the SCC suseptibility are agreed well, and the SCC site is welded deposit section in 316L whereas HAZ in 304.

  • A RS840 $CO_2$laser and a powder auto-feeding apparatus have been used to deposit single tracks of Ni-base superalloy on low carbon steel. In this paper, the effects of laser cladding parameters on clad geometry, dilution and microhardness are studied. As a results, the w/h ratio of the clad layer increases with decreasing powder feed rate and increasing laser scan speed. Increase of powder density and decrease of specific energy have little effect on dilution. It was found that the clad layer of the highest hardness has a structure in which fine and leaf like phases are dispersed in ${\gamma}$Ni matrix.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the engineering characteristics of the R.C circular ring sector plate with various boundary conditions and then to propose a rational and paraical method for application of finite element method to R.C structures. The stiffness matrix of the circular ring sector plate was obtained by using the multi-base coordinate system in which the base-coordinate systems were constructed for each nodal point of the quadrilateral element in order to reflect the complicated boundary conditions conveniently and correctly. The R.C element stiffness matrix was constructed by adding the stiffness coefficients of the steel-bar element into the plate bending element stiffness matrix. Herein, the steel-bar element was treated as the common beam element. Using the above method, the effects of steel-bar can be considered without increasing of the numbers of element and nodal points.

  • The fatigue tension tests were performed by use of the specimens without and with a hole, 1/4 crack and 1/2 crack, made of SS41 and S45C steel round bars. Followings were these results. It was shown that in the base metal and the specimen with a hole the fatigue strength of the high strength steel bars was lower than that of the low strength steel bars under the low stress range. It was shown that the fatigue strength of the specimen with a hole was nearly same as that of the base metal, but the fatigue strength of the specimens with the crack was much lower than that of the base metal. It was shown that the fatigue strength of the specimens with the crack was much lower than that of the other specimens under the high stress range.

  • The stress corrosion cracking(SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement cracking(HEC) characteristics of a weathering steel weldment were investigated in aerated acid-chloride solution. The electrochemical properties of weldment were investigated by polarization test and galvanic corrosion test. Weathering steel did not show passive behavior in the acid-chloride solution. Galvanic corrosion between the weld metal and the base metal was not observed because the base metal was anodic to the weld metal. The slow-strain-rate tests(SSRT0 were conducted at a constant strain rate o 7.87×{TEX}$10^{-7}${/TEX}/s at corrosion potential, and at potentiostatically controlled anodic and cathodic potentials. The weldment of weathering steel was susceptible to both anodic dissolution SCC and hydrogen evolution HEC.

  • Corrosion behavior of welded SWS400 steel used for bridges was studied in a range of the acid-rain environment using immersion, potentiodynamic polartization, polarization resistance, and galvanic corrosion tests. The SWS400 steel exhibited active corrosion behavior in the range of acid-rain environment, i.e. no passivation. As the results of immersion corrosion test, Tafel extrapolation method, and polarization resistance measurement, the average corrosion rats of the steels were 0.31-0.72 mm/year in the pH of 4-5, and 0.17 mm/yera in the pH 6, respectively. The steel showed a resistance to corrosion in the pH 6. The observed active behavior of SWS400 steel in chloride-containing environment indicated that the chloride ions exerts a detrimental influence on the formation of passive films. Galvanic corrosion was observed between the weld and the base metals because the weld is anodic to the base metal.

  • Because of its inexpensive cost, mild steel is frequently employed as a construction material in different industries. Unfortunately, because of its limited resistance to corrosion, a protective layer must be applied to keep it from decaying in acidic or basic environments. The presence of heteroatoms, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and pi-electrons in the Schiff base could cause effective adsorption on the mild steel surface, preventing corrosion. The weight loss method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the inhibitory effects of APIDO on mild steel in a 1 M hydrochloric acid environment. The efficiency of inhibition increased as the inhibitor concentration increased and decreased as the temperature increased. The SEM analysis confirmed that the corrosion inhibition of APIDO proceeded by the formation of an organic protective layer over the mild steel surface by the adsorption process. Simulations based on the density functional theory are used to associate inhibitory efficacy with basic molecular characteristics. The findings acquired were compatible with the experimental information provided in the research.
