  • The phenomena of oil whip in steam turbines take place for the unbalance force between a rotor shaft and bearing oil film. The several parameters that affect onset of oil whip have been well known. However, the major parameter of oil whip is shaft mis-alinement. A oil whip causes the high vibration and the shutdown of rotor system. We mostly stop the steam turbine to adjust a shaft re-alinement concerning oil whip. In this case, it needs many costs for maintenance and long shutdown times. In this study, we study and observe the oil whip of the 300MW steam turbine in many years and we conduct the field test for another steam turbine for reducing vibration from oil whip. The results of this study are that a oil whip takes place with a particular rotating speed or a particular turbine output and the oil temperature change is a very effective method for on-line oil whip treatment.

  • In this study, the decay resistance of larch wood, which was heat treated by superheated steam, was evaluated by the field decay test. During the field decay test of 12 months, non-treated wood has been severely damaged by termite, however, no visible damage has occurred in the preservative-treated wood and superheated steam heat-treated wood. Results of field decay test showed approximately 5% mass loss of the non-treated wood and the preservative-treated wood, and approximately 1% mass loss of the superheated steam heat-treated wood. After the field decay test for 12 months, the residual amount of preservatives remaining in the preservative-treated wood was lower than that before the field decay test. It was considered that the preservative was partially eluted during the field decay test, and the mass loss of the preservative-treated wood was thought to be similar to that of the non-treated wood. Through this study and additional long-term monitoring test, superheated steam heat treatment can be considered to be an environmental-friendly method to enhance the decay resistance of wood against rot fungi and/or insect without chemical treatment such as preservative injection.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effects of steam flaking treatment of corn grains imported from USA and India on in vitro gas production, microbial growth and contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ and ochratoxin A. Each treatment was composed of total 4 treatments including (1) USCW (US com-whole type), (2) USCF (US corn-flaked type), (3) IDCW (India corn-whole type) and (4) IDCF (India orn-flaked type) with 4 replications $\times$ 6 incubation times (3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 hr). Mycotoxin (aflatoxin $B_1$ & ochratoxin A) contents in test corns tended to increase gradually with increasing logistics periods from the harbor, hopper, silo to processing line. The contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ in India corn (IDCW) and US corn (USCW) were 11.71 and 1.78 ppb, respectively when measured at the hopper. After steam flaking, both contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ in USCW and IDCW were 0.00 ppb. It means that Aspergillus flavus could be decreased by steam flaking. However, this trend was not observed in ochratoxin content. The gas production rate of USA corns (USCW & USCF) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than India corns (IDCW & IDCF), and that of steam flaked corns (USCF & IDCF) was higher $1.5{\sim}2%$ than whole corns (USCW & IDCW) after 3 hr incubation in in vitro experiment. pH value was optimally maintained for microbial growth during whole incubation times with the value of 6.05 to 6.54, and was not significantly different between treatments, but USCF was somewhat lower than other treatments. pH value decreased following 12 hr of incubation but gas production increased rapidly during the same period. In addition, in vitro microbial growth rates also increased with up to 18 hr of incubation period, thereafter experienced a decrease with extended incubation time. In conclusion, US corn was superior to India corn by origin based on the results of in vitro and mycotoxin contents. And steam flaking process of imported corns tended to decrease mycotoxin contents such as aflatoxin $B_1$ and ochratoxin A as well as improve in vitro gas production and microbial growth rates.

  • Poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC)-derived nanoporous carbons were prepared by various activation methods: heat-treatment under an inert atmosphere, steam activation, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation at 873, 1073, and 1273 K. The pore structures of PVDC-derived nanoporous carbons were characterized by the $N_2$ adsorption technique at 77 K. Heat treatment in an inert atmosphere increased the specific surface area and micropore volume with elevating temperature, while the average micropore width near 0.65 nm was not significantly changed, reflecting the characteristic pore structure of ultramicroporous carbon. Steam activation for PVDC at 873 and 1073 K also yielded ultramicroporosity. On the other hand, the steam activated sample at 1273 K had a wider average micropore width of 1.48 nm, correlating with a supermicropore. The KOH activation increased the micropore volume with elevating temperature, which is accompanied by enlargement of the average micropore width from 0.67 to 1.12 nm. The average pore widths of KOH-activated samples were strongly governed by the activation temperature. We expect that these approaches can be utilized to simply control the porosity of PVDC-derived nanoporous carbons.

  • Different parts of the mulberry plant are described to be potential sources of polyphenolics exhibiting strong antioxidant activity. In this study, we prepared various aqueous extracts of mulberry root bark by subjecting to steam at different temperatures and time intervals (45℃, 15 h; 70℃, 15 h; 95℃, 6 h and 95℃, 15 h) followed by extracting at 80℃ for 1 h. The total polyphenolic content ranged from 66.82-101.20 mg gallic acid equivalent (GE)/g of extract whereas the flavonoids were in the range of 13.03-25.23 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g of extract. The extracts also exhibited strong antioxidant activities (0.99-1.66 mg trolox equivalent (TE)/g of extract in DDPH assay and 10.65-16.26 mg TE/g of extract in ABTS assay). This study clearly showed an improvement in the antioxidant activity of the water extract of mulberry root bark by the steam treatment, which can be used as a tea or health-promoting materials.

  • Freezing is one of the main processes to extend the shelf life of foods. Before freezing, a thermal treatment is normally required to control the food quality. In this study, shiitake mushrooms were heated with boiling water and with superheated steam. After the thermal treatments, the samples were continuously frozen by an individual quick freezing (IQF) process, and put them into air-containing or vacuum packaging. Samples were stored at -12, -18 and $-24^{\circ}C$ for 24 weeks, and their physicochemical properties were determined. The lightness of the samples treated with boiling water and superheated steam was decreased by 12 and 15%, respectively, than that of the control. The hardness of all the samples rapidly increased after heat treatment. The contents of organic acids in the superheated steam treated samples were higher than those in the boiling water treated samples. Therefore, superheated steam treatment of samples may be a candidate thermal treatment to preserve frozen shiitake mushrooms.

  • Characteristics of plasma nitriding and nitrocarburizing for steam treated sintered steels were studied. Fe-0.8%C powder containing Ni, Cu were sintered at 112$0^{\circ}C$ and steamed at 52$0^{\circ}C$. Temperature of plasma nitriding and nitrocarburizing was varied from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Gas mixture of nitriding was set at $N_2$ : $H_2$ =80:20 (vol.%), but $CH_4gas$ was added 1~2 vol.% for nitrocarburizing. Steam treatment for sintered steels brought not only the formation of oxide layer but also decarburizing near the surface. Decrease in hardness near the surface resulted from the formation of ferrite due to decarburizing. Thus, the low hardness was recovered not with plasma nitriding but with plasma nitrocarburixing. Wear resistance properties of steamed specimens and ni-trocarburized specimens were better than those of nitrided specimens according to the pin-on-disk wear test. On the other hand, the fatigue life of steamed specimen was shorter than that of nitrocaiburized specimen.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to find out the effects of treatments on the surface of Zirconia. Methods : To this end, we selected six treatments that have been used widely: steam cleaning, 2bar & 6bar sand blasting, grinding by green stone point, grinding by diamond bur, and grinding by diamond bur with water spray. Results : The results of our study showed that monoclinic rate increased from all six treatments. Monoclinic rate varied by treatments, ranged from 0.6% (steam cleaning) to 6.5% (6bar sand blasting). These values from all six treatments were below ISO 13356 standard, which is 25%. Also, we found that two treatments (green stone point and diamond bur) increased roughness of surface of Zirconia. Conclusion : This study concluded that phase changes of Zirconia were not significant by using six treatments we employed.
